Shipping and the Art of Van Repair

“Well, if every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn’t have hot dogs.”

Normally, Greg would have laughed at Jasper using his line but considering that his van was currently resting on its side first thing in the morning the humor was lost on him.

“How’d it even end up on it’s side like that? You’d think that I would have woken up.”

Jasper crossed her arms over her chest.

“I move a lot when I sleep. Plus you like to curl up in my hair, it probably cushioned the impact. I can just flip it back over again.”

“It looks like we cracked one of the leaf springs when we flipped, it might be better to fix it while it’s on its side. We’ll have to wait for the Gems to get back so Pearl can take a look at it.”

“I’ll take care of this. Wait here.”

“Wait, what do you mean by *take care of this*?”

“You’ll see.”

A few minutes later Jasper returned with a squirming, disgruntled Peridot tucked under her arm.

“Put me down you- wait, why is Greg’s land vehicle on it’s side?”

“There was an accident. You’re going to help repair the damage.”

“Why?”

“Because you pushed Greg off of a roof and nearly hurt him. Fixing the van is a way for you to make up for it.”

“That was one time while you were trapped at the bottom of the ocean!”

Jasper let out a grunt, and lifted Peridot so that they were eye-to-eye.

“I tipped over the van by accident and damaged it. I need a technician, and it’s just my luck that you’re the only one around. Will you help me help Greg?

“You’re actually trying to fix something you broke? What about all of those robinoids you smashed because they were “in your way” you never offered to fix those! You just stood there and laughed at me!”

Greg, realizing that the smaller Gem could go on ranting all day placed a sunburned hand on Jasper’s forearm.

“Jasper, it’s okay. Peridot doesn’t have to fix the van if she doesn’t want to. The boardwalk’s starting to open up, how about we go grab some breakfast?”

That caused Peridot to stop going on about clods. The little green Gem looked at Jasper, then turned her head to face Greg.

“Are you two an item?”

Jasper raised an eyebrow.

“A what?”

“You know, like the Camp Pining Hearts campers. It all makes sense now! And given your immense size that would completely explain why Greg’s rolling house is-”

“Uh, yeah Jasper and I are together!” Greg really didn’t need to hear *that* speech given in Peridot-speak. Unfortunately, she was already full of wide-eyed enthusiasm.

“How did you two meet? Does your relationship have a name? Every official relationship needs a name for filing purposes. My research has shown that most of them are made up of the names of those involved. How does Grasper sound?”

Jasper placed Peridot on the ground and pinched the bridge of her gemstone nose.

“Look. If you repair the van you can call it whatever you want. Deal?”

“Deal!”

Peridot pulled a strangely oversized toolbox out of her Gem and scampered off to the van.

“Grasper?” said Greg as he moved closer to the quartz.

“It could be worse. It could be Jasreg.”

“You kinda have a point there.”

Greg takes Jasper to Mr. Smiley’s carnival booth. (2:44)

In a world where @kibbles-bits invents the grasperbomb one pencil jockey dares to imagine Greg Universe, contender for most supporting character, taking in the newly freed Jasper while they deal with their abandonment on a doomed planet. Deemed unfit for the Crystal Gems active roster, these unlikely friends must find their own way of life in a universe that seems determined to destroy even the mundane.

A Grasper Fanfic

By A Clown Army

“Greg, it’s on fire.”

Greg sighed. “Er, it’s supposed to be on fire, Jasper.”

The Gem furrowed her brow. It make the muscles around her gemstone nose  press against it. “So it’s okay when THIS is on fire, but not the tent.”

“We sleep in the tent. It can’t be on fire.”

“Oh yeah, fire hurts you.” Jasper replied, leaning back against the log. “I’ll bet you think I’m stupid.”

“Nope. Not your fault you forget I’m not a Gem.”

“Yes, it is.” Jasper shot back, and Greg thought better of responding.

They watched the flames quietly. Greg reached into his bag – he knew just the thing to grab. He produced a truly giant bag of marshmallows. “S'mores?” He said with a grin.

Jasper looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Don’t talk with your mouth full.”

“…what?”

“Your words are slurring. I don’t know what that means.”

Greg blinked. “Uh, no, smores are a thing.” He opened the bag. “You take marshmallows and melt them over the fire along with chocolate, and then you put them between two gram crackers….”

Jasper rolled over. “Human food? Perhaps later. Go ahead.”

Greg frowned a bit, but took his expertly sharpened roasting stick, attaching the marshmallows to it. He hasn’t expected it to be this awkward. Perhaps he should have, but she was far less recalcitrant with him. “So the Gems are gone for the week, right?”

“Yeah. Some mission, I don’t care about it.” She gripped the log she was sitting on, tearing grooves into the bark. “Lapis and Peridot hunting some gem monster that’s been tearing up the coast. I should be with them, but….they wanted to make sure you’re protected, since we were planning this and you wouldn’t stay in.”

“What’s bugging you, Jasper?”

Jasper immediately sat up, her mane of white hair shedding dirt instantly in a shower. “Nothing’s wrong with this. I like this fine. I wish it would keep going, quietly, without having to talk about all the disasters waiting for us when we get out of this forest and back to your carwash and…”

“Steven.”

Jasper narrowed her eyes. She looked exhausted. “You interrupted me.”

“Because you were going to say something else and you know how I feel about it.”

“Yep. Am I wrong, though?”

Greg rolled his eyes. “I dunno how I can convince you he’s not her.”

“Well, then stop trying.” Jasper snapped. “I don’t care if he doesn’t remember the war. I KNOW he’s not the same person. But he’s still a Rose Quartz – the only Rose Quartz. Homeworld needs him.”

“I need him!”

“I need you too, but you’re not going to last forever!” Jasper snapped. “And eventually he’s going to have to go back!”

Greg said nothing. Stunned, he stared at Jasper, his hand limp. The night was silent, save for the crackling of flames.

“Is that supposed to be on fire?” Jasper broke the silence.

Greg yanked the oozing marshmallows back, grimacing.

****

Greg needed a walk. As much as liked spending time with Jasper, it was the times like this that he need a break from her. Especially when this subject game up.

The forest was dense – the sun was starting to set, and Greg could feel it on the wind. He wasn’t much for the woods – give him the beach any day, with his family and the van. But it was easier to get away from said family here, and the problems that plagued them both. He could hear birds chirping as he walked along, his mind troubled.

Branches rustled as the birds suddenly took flight, panicked screeches fading into the distance. Greg jumped. He listened, but everything was quiet. And it stayed quiet

Greg pulled his flannel jacket around himself to fight off the chill, even though it was warm. He started to walk. A nearby bush responded, shaking violently before something large darted away.

“Oh boy.” Greg muttered under his breath. He’d read the wilderness safety guide Steven had insisted he take, and tried to remember it. He slowly started to back away.

Bushes behind him erupted into movement, before dying down. Greg spun around, even through whatever was there was most likely gone, only to appear later. He’d wished he’d brought a gun, as he heard the sound again.

He didn’t even get around before the massive shape rushed him, taking him up off his feet. He grunted as he was deposited roughly into the nearby shrubbery, the heavy form on top of him. He gulped – he could feels its breath, too cold to be natural. It leaned in, with a hungry growl.

Greg blinked in surprise.

“Jaspmmmmph.”

Greg couldn’t finish his sentence. Jasper didn’t pull back, resting her gemstone nose against his face. He could feel her grin against his face and beard. “Heh. No survival instinct, Perfect Hot Dog.”

Greg tries to avoid her gaze, to no avail at this range. She laughed. “Oh come on, you can talk now, ’m done.”

Greg pouted, and was sure Jasper could feel it on his face. “Maybe I don’t feel like talking.”

“Okay.” She shrugged. “I’m gonna stay here then.”

“What if I don’t want you to?”

Jasper laughed, shifting her weight slightly. “As if you could do anything to move me.”

Greg groaned. Jasper wasn’t quite as heavy as she looked, but she was good at pinning him down. He couldn’t see anything but her eyes – she was staring at him at point blank.

“You only do this when you want to be serious.”

“What, jump on you and make out? I do that all the time.”

“No, this thing?”

“What thing? You humans need actual names for your ‘things’, I can’t keep track of everything you call 'things’.

Greg furrowed his brow, and Jasper furrowed back ,wrestling his forehead into submission with hers. This only annoyed him more. “You know what I mean.”

“Nope.”

“Yes you do. The face thing. Where you put your gem against my nose and won’t move.”

Jasper smiled, her giant, sharpened teeth showing. “Oh, really?” she said with mock surprise.

“Yeah, you only do it when you want me to talk seriously about something, or you want to talk seriously about something, and you don’t want any excuse to distract you. Besides, you’ve never kept your hands to yourself for this long.”

Jasper chuckled. Even her laughter shook Greg to the bone, her chest resonating against his body. She could probably flatten him if she wanted. Her hair slipped down across his arm. “Right. You pay attention.” She let out a sigh. “But there’s another reason.”

“Well, it’s about as close as you get to apologizing, too.” Greg replied softly. “Annnnnd if I mention it you could probably push my head into the ground with your face.”

“Can. Won’t.” Jasper responded. “Look, about your…Steven.”

Greg said nothng. She continued, her tone losing he sudden bout of uncharacteristic hesitation. “Look.”

She said, eyes averting. “I know you don’t want to lose him. But….it’s gonna happen. Even if it’s a thousand years later, and, well, they’re not gonna wait for it. They’re going to keep coming and destroy this planet and him if they can, unless we go back and make them stop.”

“So, what, go to war?”

“I don’t know, it’s complicated. But I don’t want to take him from you and make you sad – I want to ensure he gets a chance to be a Gem.”

“He’s a Gem now.”

“He’s never seen Homeworld. He needs to set foot on it and decide which side he’s on.” She leaned on his head. “Look, we can argue this all day but we’ll get no-where. I just want you to understand.”

“I don’t think I’m ever gonna understand Jasper. But please, please just….don’t push Steven into this.”

“You don’t think we’re a good enough team? We’ve got a water-master and a tiny genius, I think our team is better than the Crystal Gems.” She rubbed her nose against Greg. “Team Steven, that’s what you call it? Team Steven, eh?”

Greg broke into laughter. He pushed back his forehead, actually succeeding in pushing her up, though it was clear she let him. “God, why do I like you?”

“Because you’re a perfect hot dog.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Guess not.” She sat up, her hair sliding off Greg’s shoulders, impossibly soft. It felt solid and substantial, even if it was only hard light. Jasper was smiling warmly. That luxurious mane fluttered in the breeze.

Greg didn’t feel the wind. He frowned.

“What?” Jasper said, still smiling, the mane of hair moving to the side of her, revealing a single, giant eye, glaring at him from behind her before it lunged forward.

****

When Greg woke up, he was surrounded in white hair. It had no smell, but was incredibly soft, and the jostling did nothing to dissuade from from clinging to it. He nuzzled in, oblivious to the strong arms around his leg.

“Um Greg? Not the time!”

His eyes flew open. Through the hair, he could see the forest speeding past, jostling with every step. He remained firmly in place as the wind cut by him. Curious, he looked back.

Another white-haired creature followed them – this, however, was a gargantuan mass, smashing trees aside and sending rocks flying as it barreled after them. Greg could see the flash of several dozen claws striking the ground, propelling it along, and, stabilized in the center, a single, yellow eye, glaring straight at him. He could catch a glint in its center, predatory and hungry.

“A gem monster?”

“What do you think?!” Jasper snapped, frustration in her voice, and impatience. “I get you out of here and then I’m going to make it regret ruining our day!”

“Might want to pick up the pace then.” Greg replied anxiously. The beast bounded off of a particularly large rock, launching itself through the air straight at them. The eye barreled towards them, a gleaming center flashing – a round, yellow gem, unfaceting but brilliantly sparkling, before one of the monster’s claws raked out at him.

Greg struck the tree so hard he could hear it crack beneath him. The world flickered and went dark, a dull thud filling his head as he hit the ground. He opened his eyes to a blur of light, as Jasper stood before the towering beast. Her face gleamed, a massive, piston-like helmet forming as she stepped forward.

“COME ON AND FIGHT A REAL WARRIOR FREAK!” she sounded distant, and Greg closed his eyes.

****

“Greg. Greg.”

He opened his eyes. It was dark, save for an orange flicker. A great fire blazed – not the little bonfire he’d made with a lighter and some twigs, but a giant pyre made of what looked like whole trees. Jasper’s hulking form was silhouetted by the fire, as she stared down at him, even as she sat at one knee.

“It’s on fire, Greg.” She said.

Greg laughed, and pain made him regret it. He could barely move; he made the effort to look up at her. “Ahh, you okay?”

“Yeah. That monster’s gone.” She said, with none of her usual enthusiasm or disdain.

Greg smiled weakly. “Pretty bad?”

Jasper said nothing.

The human looked up at her. He wanted to lift his arm, push aside that hair and touch her gemstone comfortingly. His body refused. “Don’t worry about it.” Greg said. “The others will find us. Garnet has future vision and there’s a cellphone. You called them?”

“Yeah. They’re on their way, hopefully.”

Greg nodded. “Okay.” He couldn’t see her face, and it started to bother him. “Hey, serious talk.”

Jasper moved in. He could feel the gem against his face and something else – wet, but strange. He remembered that gems didn’t secrete fluid – what they did was something akin to their mass. It felt soft to him. He nuzzled her face.

“You know, it’s going to be fine. I’m okay, and you saved me.” He slipped a hand over hers, far smaller than her powerful paw. “A-and who knows how bad it will be? Besides, as long as you’re here, I think it’ll be okay.”

He could hear Jasper make a sound akin to a laugh.

“Oh,Greg.” She replied, and her voice faltered. “As if you could do anything to move me.”

Species Swap!

Um, so Jasper’s an old grouchy human war veteran who’s pink alien girlfriend gave up her physical form to give her a son. Not sure where she lives but she has this old radio that’s stuck playing oldies.

Greg is now Gregoryite (of course) and was sent with Peridot to help with negotiations. She’s like no help at all and Peridot gets frustrated with her easily.

Gregoryite finds Jasper’s radio and gets obsessed with it and junk~

So yeah, Steven is Jasper’s other mom and since Gregoryite’s a Gem she uses female pronouns.

Grasperbomb gave me an excuse to do this. Had requests for it months ago.
