I find it so ironic that Percy is perceived as a mindless goofball and yet pretty much every fight he has won was because he outsmarted his opponent

Bringing this back cause that “mindless goofball” perception is circling back around and I genuinely understand WHY this keeps happening - Percy’s self perception of himself is so so so bad and readers continue to take his self reflection as the Ultimate Characterization and just like

Percy is extremely resourceful. He’s calculating and clever and cunning and if you were to tell Percy that he was any of the aforementioned traits he would say “No I’m not.” 

Because he doesn’t think he is.

Percy outsmarts his opponents a lot. Like 90% of the time. And it’s just a very clear moment where he acknowledges “alright, I recognize that I can’t physically take on this monster/opponent down because of reason x,y, or z. So now what?” 

And then his next step is very clearly to manipulate the person. He talks with them. He goads Ares into a fight, he manipulates Luke to spill his secrets to the Camp, he gets Crusty to lay down in his own bed, gets Gaea to choose him in a rigged game, gets the gods to swear on the River Styx. 

Honestly he’s just really good at getting his opponents monologuing to give him more time to think.

But his internal thoughts throughout this entire process is “Wow I have no plan whatsoever I’m so reckless lol”
