Hamitch can't remember the last time he was this sober, but he has to pull himself together, just this once. However sobriety, no matter how temporarily, is bringing back his demons... and his conscience. He knows this is how the games work. He can only get one of them out of that arena. And even though the boy had practically begged him to keep the girl alive, in his unusually clear state it feels so wrong to condemn him to this fate. He takes a sip of his wine because there's no way he can take the opening of the games without any aid at all. But he's going to try this time.
The prospect of being responsible for yet another death, most likely two more, to add to his list of 46 dead kids is unbearable. But he has to focus now because the tributes are being raised onto their platforms.
The countdown is blearing in his ears and the camera slowly pans around the circle of tributes when he sees it. It's the reflection of sunlight that catches his eye, but upon closer look the item causing it is unmistakable.
And he knows he has to get her through this, has to do everything he can to get her out of this arena. Because the last time he saw this pin it was fixed to the collar of his friend as she took her last breath.
He has to get her out.
For Maysilee.
