Well if anyone wondered what Wales is getting up to during the Quarantine, someone set up a Facebook group called Cรดr-ona ("cรดr" being the Welsh word for choir), and are using it to teach each other descants for famous Welsh music and songs. It was set up three days ago and already has 10000 members. One of those was an accidentally-added non-Welsh speaker who is very confused, but everyone is delighted by his bewildered presence. Occasionally someone will go for a walk on a beach or mountain and upload a video of themselves singing one of the descants they've learned.

This is the most quintessentially Welsh response possible, and I would expect no less.

Update: it has been 4 days and we are up to 17,000 members. Several non-Welsh speakers have joined, all of whom are saying things like "I have no idea what any of you are saying but the singing is beautiful", to which they are inundated with "Welcome! You can learn on Duolingo! Enjoy the singing!" messages.

Today is Dydd Gwener Gwerin, or Folk Friday. Might upload an alto/tenor version of y Fwyalchen later.

In one o(or several)the many many Iron Man comics Tony shades another CEO for not treating his workers well and paying them well. CEO pretty much says, "It's not profitable" and Tony says something like, "I have a super profitable company because I pay my workers well and give them good benefits."

โ€œYou have to understand, Tony Stark is brilliant. He is a genius. His mind works on a level so advanced, mere mortals can not possibly grasp how amazing he actually is.

Now, you may argue that that treating your employees well so that they want to come for work you, are motivated and happy and loyal and more productive and creative is in fact simple common sense. And it would of course be a valid point. But what you fail to fully appreciate is the true rarity of common sense among human beings. No, really, you have no idea just how incredibly rare that is.

I believe part of that is a lack of self-awareness, though when even DUM-E shows more common sense than my average superior that should really give you an idea about the state of the worldโ€“โ€

โ€œClint.โ€

โ€œWhat, Nat? Canโ€™t you see Iโ€™m busy?โ€

โ€œYou know everyone at SHIELDโ€™s listening to your podcast.โ€

โ€œWell, they should know what kind of shitty employers they are. Seriously, Nat. Have you ever even locked at our pension plan? Now as I was saying, Tony-โ€

โ€œClint.โ€

โ€œWhat?!โ€

โ€œJust apologize to Tony like a functional human being instead of singing his praises for another forty-five minutes on your podcast. He doesnโ€™t even follow you anymore.โ€

โ€œHe wHAT?!โ€

โ€œYou spilled his coffee. All over his bot. What did you expect?โ€

I typed this yesterday right before I went to bed and now I realize that itโ€™s really just a tiny window looking into a โ€˜verse where Clint has his own podcast since before podcasts were cool where he keeps going on and on about Tony Stark, conspiracies, his shitty unnamed employers [the cause of about half the conspiracy theories associated with him on social media], Tony Stark, coffee and secret facts about various governments heโ€™s not supposed to share.

This is a universe where Clint is basically Tom Holland interviewed about Marvel facts he knows and is not supposed to share. This is national security relevant information broadcasted through the internet and the only reason SHIELD hasnโ€™t shut it down yet is because no, hahaha, there was no mission in Budapest, hahahahah

theyโ€™re all listening and learning and no oneโ€™s sure exactly how high Clintโ€™s security clearance goes and where he gets his information and which parts are accurate and which parts are not and fuck, what ifโ€“

On an unrelated note, Clint is BFFs with JARVIS.

ok like kakapo are great and all, i love them dont get me wrong but takahฤ“ are by far the best endangered new zealand bird and quite possibly THE Best Bird?

you cant really get any better than this. criminally underrated

Even better, we thought it was extinct for 50 years, and then we just found a whole bunch in a meadow. We lost a bright purple flightless bird the size of a large chicken for 50 years.

life under capitalism is so alienating like if i think about it too much or too deeply for too long it depresses the hell out of me

like if you think about it, most people make their friends either at school or at their job. what happens if you canโ€™t find a job? or if you struggle to hold a job? or if you canโ€™t afford to go to school? thereโ€™s meetup groups, but most of them do activities that you have to pay for which, if you have little to no spendable income, makes it difficult to participate and therefore makes it difficult for u to make new friends. going to a bar costs money. even solitary hobbies cost money. like how sad is it that something as essential as socializing and making friends and spending time with people and building your own community and support group is predicated on your ability to generate capital

Perceptions of Scientists

Iโ€™m a Masterโ€™s student at the moment, doing research into perceptions of scientists - my survey is live until the end of March, and I desperately need responses! As long as you are 18 or over you are eligible to partake, and it shouldnโ€™t take more than 5 to 10 minutes! Please fill it out and share anywhere you like - the more the merrier!! It would mean the world to me.  https://hull.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/perceptions-of-scientists2

I came out to my mom as non-binary, and she was asking me about whether or not I wanted to change my name, and I was telling her about how a common joke for non-binary people is that we name ourselves nouns and trees

But hereโ€™s the thing

I forgot to account for the fact that my mom is a huge nature nerd

So I came home from school this afternoon to my mom with a list of different trees and bird names that she thinks I should name myself

Here are some highlights:

  • Devilโ€™s walking stick
  • Titmouse
  • Cardinal (Iโ€™m not apposed to this one)
  • Jay
  • Peregrine
  • Pawpaw
  • Pileated woodpecker
  • Birch
  • Maple
  • Cypress (legit considering this one)
  • Dogwood

She legitimately thinks these are good names and she also came to the realization that a) she shouldโ€™ve given all her kids gender-neutral names. She wishes sheโ€™d given in to her inner hippie and named us things like blue, moon, river, ocean, and sky.

and B) she wants to now give all of her kids tree/bird nicknames. She followed my sister around for an hour asking if she wanted to be named oak or spruce.

I love her and Iโ€™m so glad sheโ€™s so supportive, but this is not what I thought the reception to me coming out was going to be

That's so sweet!

โ€œ40 is good, 50 is great, 60 is fab, and 70 is fucking awesome!โ€ ~ Helen Mirren ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

missed some greats!

I canโ€™t believe Julie Andrews is not on this list guys.

โ€œItโ€™s fucking outrageous. Itโ€™s ridiculous. And โ€™twas ever thus. We all watched James Bond as he got more and more geriatric, and his girlfriends got younger and younger. Itโ€™s so annoying.โ€ - Helen Mirren on the bullshit that is (sexist) ageism (source) Whenever you need a positive role model to help you remember that aging is NATURAL, aging is BEAUTIFUL, there is NOTHING WRONG with aging, and if youโ€™re LUCKY will you live long enough to experience it โ€“ look long and hard at every single one of these these Queens.
