The Girl From the Other Side (2022)
thinking about how the world would be better if more people understood the differences between 'the author failed to tell the story they wanted to tell' and 'the author told the story they wanted to tell, but they told it badly' and 'the author told the story they wanted to, and they told it well, but it wasn't the story I wanted to read'
I liked the new episode but I felt like something was missing from fukuchi’s monologue about his motivations, and someone on twitter pointed out that the dialogue where he explicitly blames the state for all the horrors of war was completely cut.
this is a pretty important part of his motivations/goal and therefore the plot, so it’s strange to me that they would remove it. it could’ve been cut for time, of course, but I have to wonder if it might’ve been too political? there are already anti-war themes in fukuchi’s character of course but these particular lines are very overt in the way they criticize the government.
You do have a point here. Overall I feel that the season’s pace has been quite fast so far so it can also be yet another part that has been cut to keep up with that pace. But it can very well be like you said. A Japanese friend of mine once told me about how the studios try to avoid the sensitive, political topic in anime these days. In the end, we can only guess, because I think they won’t tell us, just like how they never told us why they changed the color of the Hunting Dogs uniform.
i've also been wondering this same thing since they changed the hunting dogs' uniforms. it's so hard to say bc pretty-san is also right that the pacing has been VERY fast, but it's hard to not see the studio omitting that part about the nature of war and fukuchi's goals as a sort of confirmation to me that they are low-key trying to side-step some of the more controversial anti-war themes in this arc? i will be very interested to see how the fukuchi vs tachihara fight goes, and what they decide to leave and cut out, bc if i recall correctly, a lot of these same topics about government complicity in war comes up again there (img below from vol 21).
i wonder if we will see this explanation in the next episode or two? i think if this is in the tachihara episode, then it can be chalked up to time issues, but if this is mysteriously removed too, then i think a case can be made that bones is either side-stepping it themselves or are being pressured elsewhere to side-step it (i don't know enough about broadcasting rules in japan to say which it is. it could be that the decision is being made above the anime teams' heads)
‘Of the Heavens’ — watercolor & mixed media on paper
This my first painting I created for my recent exhibition, ‘Fables’. I’ve always had a fascination for folktales around the world. These stories have always sparked wonder in my imagination as a kid, so I wanted to create my own personal interpretation of a few fabled creatures with respect to the traditions, symbology and legends where they come from. The first that came to mind was that of the Dragon, a creature prevalent throughout a lot of East Asian cultures and often symbolic of power, fortune and the divine. So, here’s my interpretation of the Dragon, blessed with auspicious jade eyes & claws 😄 #brbchasingdreams
