I'm trying hard to remember where I stored all of my WIPs in 2016, because there's an old Star Trek fic on my AO3 that I'd really like to go back to working on.
Google is seriously messing with Maps. This is the building where I grew up and:
- It obviously doesn’t span across the street, as you can see in open street map cap
- It used to look fine in google maps just some months ago.
Right-click the location and click “Report a data problem” and it should bring up a menu that lets you report the issue.
Yeah but the problem is that the data problems now are everywhere. Everywhere. Like, this is 300m around my family house:
Red: made up roads that don’t exist: those are pedestrian streets
Orange: missing buildings
Yellow: weird alignment issues.
If I look around my current house in a big city, there are issues too, but not as often. But the small town where I grew up is not mostly an hallucination, while a few months ago was pretty exact. And I’ve looked into other areas I know that used to have only lowres satellite images in Maps, but the map view used to be exact, and know are… Well:
Shit that reblog was mine, obvs
Yeah, that’s my guess too. As far as I know, Google maps data entry / validation was pretty much something done by hand, and I would bet that they have just changed that to feed satellite images to an algo and let it churn the maps from there.
And of course, that works ok (more or less, worse than the human-curated version, but still ok) in areas with good, hi-res input images, but it’s crap in areas where the images were lo-res to begin with.
Like, look at this shit:
Oh fuck, this is a good one.
See this street Google maps says it’s there?
That’s literally the train tracks
I was just here a couple of days ago… you know what is in that circled lot? Nothing - it’s a construction site, so there’s machinery and a couple of port-a-potties and maybe a small admin trailer. All of which Google apparently thinks are “structures” noteworthy enough to include on a damn map.
Send me a word and I will write you a poem.
Optional: include a fandom and/or character
