That’s it, now you know everything.

This has probably been done already, but oh well. I love these gals, so I wanted to share my arcane knowledge.

dysfunctional family goes on a road trip = best description of Tsubasa ever

I am giving in and reblogging this one even though I think everyone in my flist who cares has seen it already, just because I still can’t believe it’s a post that mentions everything CLAMP /and/ pokes fun at them in a GOOD, NICE way, /and/ doesn’t shit on a single series of them

I’m here again…

…a thousand miles away from you

A broken mess

Just scattered pieces of who i am

I tried so hard…

…thought i could do this on my own

I’ve lost so much a long the way

Then i see your face

I know i’m finally yours

I find everyting i thought i lost before

You call my name…

…I come to you in pieces…

So you can make…

…me whole

So i realized i wanted to draw a very sketchy and sheesy serirei  (kind of platonic?? whatever you wanna take it lol) comic ;u; also with some bad English grammars but anyways!

i think Seri knows…and is just up to Reigen to open up more with him about that.. :V  i thought on this idea after reading chapter 6 of REIGEN manga.. ;u;

i still don’t read chapter 7 of REIGEN manga but whatevers XD Seri talked with Tome about Human Resources on chapter 5, so i thought maybe she’ll read more about it someday and try some things to make work environment less dull at the office.

also there’s a CSI reference here lol plus random mobs at the end XD

The basic outline of my upcoming novel-length How Reigen is Gay-Coded dissertation for my PhD in anime studies (concentration in wishful thinking):

His whole character arc revolves around how he’s been hiding who he is. Yeah, mainly because he’s a fraud, but hiding what he hates about himself is a major theme there, too. Our man is closeted

Mostly estranged from his family, and they bring up marriage almost immediately when they finally call him and leave a message. Our man’s parents either have suspicions or know and don’t approve

Said to be popular with lady clients, but has never expressed any opinion on that whatsoever, let alone interest.

Completely inexperienced with relationships. Again, our man is closeted

He asked Serizawa if he ever liked a girl at any point in his life. Roundabout, extremely subtle way to ask “so you gay?” Actually, that whole “I want to be a partner like that” conversation felt…loaded. The expressions and body language and the inexplicable awkwardness of it.

And. Reigen asked Serizawa to go get drinks even though it’s shown that he doesn’t drink. And held onto him under an umbrella. You ever hear the term “ai ai gasa”? If not, google it. (Fun fact, Gon and Killua has an ai ai gasa with their name on it on the whiteboard in hunterpedia). Yeah.

His whole philosophy is built around how everyone is average, no one is too different from everyone else. Our man sure has thought about difference a lot

Speaking of difference, he identified young mob’s feelings of isolation pretty easily, given that Mob is hard for most people to read. Being that he can’t relate to having potentially dangerous powers, it makes me wonder if he felt isolated when he was younger because he felt different from other kids

He’s got that kinda energy only a twink can have

To expand on these wonderful points above, I’m going to unload a bit of the referenced moments in the manga. Examining gay-coded characters involves looking at not just what is said but what is unsaid. There is value in silence and ambiguity, and readers can gain understanding and characters–Reigen and Serizawa in this case–can build relationships through nonverbal exchanges.

On a related note, being “closeted” isn’t inherently a negative thing as people and cultures have differing attitudes about what should be considered public and private (the problem though, as MP100 has reinforced, is when YOU don’t accept who you are). I can go on about how “closet”/”out” dichotomy can be harmful/not applicable to certain people and groups, but what I’m saying here is even if ONE never confirms Reigen’s sexuality, all these hints at Reigen being gay are still valid BECAUSE silence and ambiguity have meaning.

As @kurapikawithagun pointed out, Reigen’s basically is asking Serizawa “do you like girls?” and Serizawa responds with a matter-of-fact “no.” Yet, when Reigen continues to pry through making light of Serizawa’s answer, Serizawa does not comment even as Reigen awaits his reaction. It’s ambiguous as to what Serizawa is feeling especially since ONE chose not to give us his expression, but it’s unlikely Serizawa feels shame or “troubled” by his lack of attraction to girls (the casual tone conveyed through “nope, none” hints he just doesn’t care). Like Reigen, we are on our own devices on what to make of Serizawa’s silence.

BUT there’s also a sense of intimacy in this moment where only Reigen–not the reader–sees Serizawa’s face in both panels and Serizawa faces Reigen. It’s a subtle thing, but ONE is affording Serizawa privacy as well as showing Serizawa having a connection to another adult male who repeatedly expresses no interest in women either.

I mean like look:

You don’t fucking put a speech bubble about “oh you’re not popular with the ladiessss” next to a response that completely deflects that and have it NOT mean anything.

Anyway, later we get our infamous “I hope I can become a partner like that” panel where the context is again romance and attraction. And once again, we witness a private relationship between Serizawa and Reigen.

Similar to the earlier panel with Serizawa, ONE chooses to not reveal Reigen’s expression. But unlike before, Reigen is facing AWAY from Serizawa . The somewhat private connection they had in the earlier panel turns complicated as Reigen is both opening up to and closing himself off from Serizawa and, to an extent, the readers.

“I hope I can become a partner like that” basically translates to “I’m not good enough to be with anyone.” With the comment about how Tsubomi and Mob “can exist without distorting each other,”  Reigen fears he’ll bring out the worst in people. Yes, Reigen is a private person, but one full of self-loathing to the point that he feels the need to keep people at arms length or risk “distorting” them. And hell, the fact that Reigen isn’t looking at Serizawa despite pouring his heart out to him can be read as 1) Reigen feeling ashamed of himself, 2) Reigen not wanting to distort Serizawa or 3) a mix of both of those things.

Yet, we see Serizawa react–puzzled, intrigued by Reigen’s words. He still looks at Reigen even when Reigen refuses to look at Serizawa. Serizawa wants to connect with Reigen and possibly, like the reader, we see an opportunity of a romantic relationship between Serizawa and Reigen in Reigen’s words even if  he doesn’t fully realize it himself.

None of this is explicitly stated, but the atmosphere, the past interactions, the unique relationship Reigen and Serizawa with each other–no matter how you define it–those things speak for themselves.

Serizawa IS kinda chatty (+ Serirei dynamics)

Okay I’m thinking about @skeilig‘s posts on how Serizawa actually does talk A LOT, but doesn’t seem to around Reigen, which leads me to these points:

1.     Serizawa thinks A LOT before he talks, so much of what he says has been on his mind for a while (ex. his story of how Touichirou “saved” him, the nature of psychic powers in his conversation with Tome, etc.). The topics he would talk in detail about are things he internalized or mulled over, hence why he occasionally talks in paragraphs.

2.     Anyone next to Reigen will always be the “silent one.” We all know that talking is Reigen’s greatest talent and asset. He uses it at any chance whether to distract, calm, deescalate situations, etc. He’s great at coming up with things on the fly and adapts. Not saying that Serizawa is incapable of doing those things, it’s just that Reigen is… Reigen. If he doesn’t talk or move every couple of seconds, something’s up.

3.     Serizawa does spend a lot of his interactions with Reigen just LOOKING at him. A great example of this is when he watches Reigen and Dimple coming up with ways to scare Tome out of joining Spirits & Such, much to Serizawa’s disapproval (he sighs in relief when Reigen decides to be reasonable and simply talk to Tome). If point #1 is true, Reigen is legit on Serizawa’s mind a lot (and I mean yeah, just look at his thought bubbles). That’s gay.

4.     Though we shouldn’t forget that Serizawa and Reigen conversations flow quite naturally—they bounce off each other too—especially once Serizawa gets comfortable (excerpts from that Youkai case):

In these panels above, we’re seeing Serizawa visibly think before he shares his deductions and then Reigen is like I’M RIDING THIS sorry

And here, Serizawa and Reigen are just talking without prompting each other. In fact, Serizawa prompts Reigen in these specific exchanges.

I know these aren’t like mindblowing observations/examples, but I just love their dynamic, and I’m going to keep in mind for possible fanfic purposes/future meta that these two are indeed chatty fuckers (one happens to pause a bit longer before talking) who are comfortable with each other.

(so yeah, thank you @skeilig for giving more reasons to think about serirei)
