I'm pretty tired of seeing the attitude that basically boils down to "what I'm doing is real magic and what other people are doing is just roleplay".

There were three more paragraphs about this here, but instead of posting all that, I'm just gonna skip ahead to the conclusion now:

Most of the more experienced and credible practitioners I know don't feel the need to engage in mean-spirited posturing about it.

We all look like LARPers to people who aren’t involved with this shit. Do you really have to be the most elitist LARPer?

I think people gotta keep in mind that there's a difference between a methodology and a commandment when it comes to "why we do the stuff we do in a religion/spirituality."

Methodologies are stuff we do because doing that stuff achieves better results.

For example: It's easier to make a pot using wet clay than dry clay, so "keeping clay wet while using it" is part of the methodology of crafting clay pots.

But there's no contractual obligation to keep clay wet. Wet clay just works better than dry clay for making pots.

When people ask me "What do I gotta do to be Heathen?" they're often asking "What are the Norse gods' divine commandments, and to what degree do I need to follow them in order to be Heathen?"

Which I can't answer because it has no answer, because those commandments don't exist. It's methodology.

You know, Hestia had it right- keep to yourself, keep tending the home fires, stay at home, stay out of everyone’s drama, and yet also be the one they turn to when they need a safe space, a break from everything, or just someone to talk to.

Since ancient times, in cultures across the globe, people have participated in religions from the moment of birth.

Children have worshipped divine beings since thousands of years ago.

So yes, even if you're a beginner, even if you're young, just go ahead and pick a deity who's piqued your interests, and start praying. They won't bite.

Literally this ^^^

You don't need some kind of expertise to worship deities. There is nothing dangerous about them.

Something someone once said helped put this into perspective for me: Deities are the protection from evil. They will keep you safe, they will look after you, and even more importantly, they will form bonds with you that can last for a lifetime.

Take the leap of faith, and pray. ❤️ 🫂

Can confirm.

Deities are not going to scoff or snap at you for "bothering" them or tell you they don't have time for your nonsense. The worst you're going to get is the cosmic version of call waiting.

"All of our intercessors are currently assisting other parties. Your petition is important to us, so please remain on the line or leave an offering at the beep and we will return your prayer as soon as possible."

You don't need to wait to be picked or chosen or to have someone divine which deity is trying to make contact. You are perfectly worthy and capable of reaching out first, and you don't need to make a sworn commitment to pray for help or guidance or to make offerings.

There Really Is No Need To Wait - Go Ahead And Venerate!

“Our Lady of New Frontiers, Nichelle Nichols”

My last painting of 2022, and I wanted it to be a painting carrying me into the new year, a tribute to an amazing and inspirational woman.

Star Trek has been a show I have watched since I was a wee one. I started with TNG as a child, but when I finally watched TOS in college, its impact was undeniable, both today and especially during the time it aired.

Although the famous speech says “final frontier”, Nichelle Nichols was a woman leading the way onto new frontiers, a beacon of hope, resilience and possibility. So that is what I wish to carry with me into the new year.

a lot of folks mourn that witchblr isn't as active, and that's a fair thing to complain about, I think. a lot of stuff is reblogs and the same info being regurgitated, a lot of blogs feel they have to teach.

I think if we want to fix this, though, we need to be kinder to beginners. We need to defend them when someone comes in and picks apart every little thing they do. We need to not have lofty standards and to defend the fact that everyone practices differently!

maybe I've been unlucky, but I've seen a lot of folks try to post original witchy content and get attacked over it. Which is fine if it's purposeful* appropriation or the like, but if a christian witch is posting about using the bible in their magic, it shouldn't be acceptable for a pagan to berate them for that. This just ends up in the original content getting taken down and the blog going quiet.

I'm not good about this by any means. I get anxious about being attacked for not having a perfectly-formed practice I can easily explain. But if we want a lively witchblr, we need to look out for each other and maybe not try to force ourselves to be teaching blogs.

*edit, my wording wasn't great in the first post smh

Something I wish I was told as a young witch:

Correspondences are the most potent when it resonates with your meaning and your reality.
Yes, every old dusty grimoire says that we use the new moon for manifestation.
Every popular new age author since the 80′s says that rose quartz is used for love magic.
A lot of witchcraft bloggers say to use green candles for money magic.

But:

If your spirit tells you that the new moon is going to benefit your divination rituals that night? Trust your intuition.
If you pick up a rose quartz, and that stone tells you that it wants to help you feel protected? Listen to it.
If you associate other colors with money because your country’s paper currency isn’t green? Use the red, blue, yellow, or other color candles.

Collective correspondences are useful and have weight to them, but nothing is more effective than your own instincts.

Learn to trust your intuitive gifts, babes.

I cannot point this one out enough.

The correspondence lists you see floating around the internet are very much Western/Americancentric. Which is why they never resonated with me, even when I was a beginner.

In my practice, there is more red and yellow and not a lot of white. I charge new card decks under the new moon as well as the full moon. I almost never use rosemary. I collect rose quartz pieces because I like the color pink.

Looking for some fabulous free ebooks to load up on this winter? Go check out the catalog at Global Grey Ebooks, a huge archive of public domain texts. Search by subject, author, title, or keyword, or browse one of the pre-existing categories such as Fiction, Folklore and Mythology, History, or Poetry. I know my fellow witches will want to check out the Esotericism and the Occult section!

You can pick and choose as many titles as you want or purchase a pre-curated selection that covers a particular topic. (The zipped ebook collections make great gifts for bookworm friends from far away!) All proceeds go to supporting the continued existence of the archive, which is maintained by a single tireless worker bee. If you like what you see, please consider donating.

(Keep in mind while browsing that this is an ARCHIVE and these are OLD books. Some texts may contain material that we now know to be objectionable. I would encourage everyone to read critically and to view them as a window into the past and a marker for how far we've come.)

I've been using Global Grey Ebooks for several years now to locate and read hard-to-find ebooks on history and occultism. This is a fabulous resource for anyone with an interest in history, folklore, classical fiction, or classical literature in general.

Check out Global Grey Ebooks and start adding to your personal library today!
