Strike That Is A Strike

Hiya! I know we’ve been inactive for a while now, but I wanted to respond to this because I want to encourage anyone being creative (even if we’re not currently creating Newsies content) You absolutely can incorporate our headcanons into your writing, just make sure to credit us (that helps us read it, too!)

This goes for anyone, btw. If you liked one of our headcanons and want to use it in fic, please feel free, we’re so flattered when we learn we’ve inspired someone, just please credit us if you do.

You’re good, that’s absolutely not stupid!

 He’s replying to Katherine, who asks if they really think a bunch of wealthy, powerful men like Pulitzer and the other owners of the newspapers would pay any attention to a bunch of dirt poor children. Specifically, she says (metaphorically) that they’re kids who “haven’t got a nickel to their name,” and Crutchie (literally) responds that he does in fact, have 1 nickel. 

They’re talking on different levels & she’s managed to hurt his pride, especially when you think about how unashamed he is to talk about sleeping on the streets with Jojo after the new newsie price is announced. 

Personally I think most of the joke is in his body language and facial expression while he says it, but that’s just my opinion.

Aww thank you. The reason you stopped getting notifications is probably that we haven’t posted anything since like... December. Yikes. Life, you know?

Good news: college shutting down has given us plenty of time to watch newsies...

I did notice, though, since I scrolled through the whole movie again, that Davey’s “handedness” changes depending on what situation he’s in: he carries his papers with his left hand, he eats dinner with his left hand, he usually yanks on Jack with his left hand. But he shakes Denton’s hand & accepts his business card, all with his right hand.

You know, this National Geographic article makes the claim that there were very few lefties among people born from 1870-1900, due to the pressures of using ink dip pens in classrooms and operating heavy machinery in factories. I’d bet that canon!era Davey is at least somewhat ambidextrous — he would have been taught to use his right hand in school. 

I love that he’s left handed though, it definitely fits him as a character. 

Ooh. Okay, so based on their response to Katherine’s “let’s get drunk!” (and Race’s sad little stagger/lip lick when she backpedals) this probably occurred decently often —

Newsies had a reputation for living it up, & there was also a difference in 1900 between drinking beer (in dilution, essentially just de-bacterialized water) and harder alcohols like gin and whiskey, so the boys probably did drink weak beer on a fairly regular basis.

But if they did manage to get their hands on something stronger, it would have been a great time. I’m picturing it being pretty cold out, maybe snowing, and Race tumbles in through the door with a blinding smile and a handle of medicine-grade Taylor whiskey under his vest. He cracks the wax seal and it sloshes slightly, amber drips slipping down the bottleneck all over his fingers, and they all take slugs straight from it, smiles spreading larger as the night progresses. 

Elmer’s all flushed & Finch has lost his hat, Jack’s getting sappy, but mostly it’s just the same pile of limbs and grins as always — just a little looser and easier to come by.

(and then someone gets up on a table & gives a rousing speech about socialism)

oh! I hadn’t thought of it that way before!

I know it definitely wasn’t 6th in population or wealth or geographical span (hell, it wasn’t even technically a city in July 1899) & we were having a hell of a time figuring out what it could be 6th in.
