Listening to Shantel Vansanten (on the For All Mankind podcast) talk about her character work for Karen between seasons is….wow.

“The process I learned was sitting down with my journal, and going through it in the years in between and looking at… what music was out that I would like, what are some of the historical events and how would I feel about them? Did I vote? Who did I vote for? And like, mundane things. I would just spend the months thinking about, ‘Did Karen paint the living a different color in these ten years? Did she plant a new plant? Did a parent die?’ This last season it was, when did she go through menopause? What would that be like, how would it affect her? She went through a divorce–what song did she listen to on the way home from the divorce? Wilson Phillips “Hold on For One More Day,” because it was 1990.
So, for me, I know all of these dumb, imaginary things that I have journaled hundreds and hundreds of pages about. Choices I made for Karen that we never saw onscreen, but that would feel like she had the fleshed-out life in between.”

I find that so moving; the amount of work she put in to find and develop this character that she really didn’t like at first, and how, through that process, she not only developed a deep love for Karen but also learned a lot about the role/impact of judgment and empathy in her own life. That’s good art.
