Listening to Shantel Vansanten (on the For All Mankind podcast) talk about her character work for Karen between seasons is….wow.
“The process I learned was sitting down with my journal, and going through it in the years in between and looking at… what music was out that I would like, what are some of the historical events and how would I feel about them? Did I vote? Who did I vote for? And like, mundane things. I would just spend the months thinking about, ‘Did Karen paint the living a different color in these ten years? Did she plant a new plant? Did a parent die?’ This last season it was, when did she go through menopause? What would that be like, how would it affect her? She went through a divorce–what song did she listen to on the way home from the divorce? Wilson Phillips “Hold on For One More Day,” because it was 1990.
So, for me, I know all of these dumb, imaginary things that I have journaled hundreds and hundreds of pages about. Choices I made for Karen that we never saw onscreen, but that would feel like she had the fleshed-out life in between.”
I find that so moving; the amount of work she put in to find and develop this character that she really didn’t like at first, and how, through that process, she not only developed a deep love for Karen but also learned a lot about the role/impact of judgment and empathy in her own life. That’s good art.

Chanté Adams as Max Chapman
A League of Their Own (2022)
#she’s a goddamn star!!!!#listen she carries a storyline that is inherently challenging to plot out because it HAS to lag behind the pace of the ‘main’ narrative#she’s at the starting line with the other girls but isn’t allowed to compete so we watch her struggle to get back in the race#and it takes the whole damn season and from a storytelling perspective the stark contrast in forward motion between the two narratives#is a little jarring at times because Max is not living a Sports Movie Narrative; she is living a Dark Night of the Soul Narrative#and it’s a challenge to put those stories concurrently and line them up but the writers did so well#(it doesn’t hurt that the secret they unlocked for success was bridging everything with the Queer Experience)#anyways you also need a goddamn force to carry this Dark Night of the Soul Narrative and Chanté Adams delivers#so fucking winsome and charming and carries this whole thing#(but also shout out to Gbemisola Ikumelo because she’s a radiant joy and an absolute bright star on this show too) @drshebloggo
