"This is a song that I think really exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album, one of which being fatalism, longing, pining away, lost dreams. I think that it's a very fatalistic album in that there are lots of very dramatic lines about, you know, life or death, "I love you, it's ruining my life," these are very hyperbolic, dramatic things to say. But it's that kind of album. It's about a dramatic, artistic, tragic kind of take on love and loss. And Fortnight, I've always imagined that it took place in this American town where the American Dream you thought would happen to you didn't, right? You ended up not with the person that you loved, and now you have to just live with that every day, wondering what would've been, maybe seeing them out, and that's a pretty tragic concept, really. So I was just writing from that perspective."

I don’t have enough brain cells to understand who/what fortnight is about… the neighbor and husband references?

okay, so like taylor said, fortnight is sort of a prologue to the entire album. it references a lot of other songs (down bad, florida!!!, peter, guilty as sin?) there are a few different ways that it could be read, and i may not stick to this interpretation, but the below is where i landed.

fortnight sets the scene for the entire album and the events that are about to unfold by telling a story about an alternate reality about the future she was headed to in which she and joe ignore their problems, stay together, and build the life they're planning. she's in need of psychiatric help, she's drinking, she's depressed. but the other guy has re-entered her orbit. they're going to keep crossing paths. she feels insane. he's right there. she is insane. her husband cheats on her; she's enraged at him. the other guy is married to someone great; she's enraged at her too. she feels insane. she is insane, because she's fully consumed with the anger of following the bad path instead of taking the risk.

so at the end of the song, she decides she has to run for it. she has to move to america. she has to go to florida and start over. she has to buy the car and let him touch her instead of just daydreaming about it. because if she doesn't scratch the itch, if she doesn't see what happens, if she doesn't chase the guy that's been her "what else?" then well, how will she ever know? and the rest of the record is her realizing that maybe she wishes she hadn't.

"Florida!!! is a song that I wrote with Florence + The Machine, and I think I was coming up with this idea of like, 'What happens when your life doesn't fit, or your choices you've made catch up to you?' And there's just, you're surrounded by these harsh consequences, and judgment, and circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you'd be. And you just want to escape from everything you've ever known. Is there a place you could go? I was watching like Dateline. People have these crimes that they commit. Where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida, you know? They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in. And I think when you go through a heartbreak, there's a part of you that thinks, 'I want a new name. I want a new life. I don't want anyone to know where I've been, or know me at all.' And so that was kind of, that was the jumping off point behind, 'Where would you go to reinvent yourself and blend in?' Florida!!!"

"A lot of the songs on The Tortured Poets Department deal with the idea of heartbreak, or loss, in a metaphor of something else. The metaphor in Down Bad is that I was comparing sort of the idea of being like, love-bombed, where someone like, you know, rocks your world and dazzles you and then just kind of abandons you, as an alien abduction, where you were abducted by aliens, like this girl was abducted by aliens, but she wanted to stay with them. And then when they drop her off back in her hometown, she's like, 'Wait, no. Where are you going? I liked it there! It was weird but it was cool. Come back' and so she's just like, the girl, the character in the song, just felt like, had just been exposed to a whole different galaxy and universe she didn't know was possible. How can you just put me back where I was before?"

we have exhausted the jack hate conversations. they are best friends and they make great music together. if you’re bored of it, there are endless other musicians you can listen to instead of taylor. you can stick to her other songs no problem. no one is holding the gun to your head. stop blaming jack when taylor is making the music she wants to make. if she didn’t want this style as her sound she wouldn’t work with him. and beyond that taylor takes an active involvement in the creative process so you’re kidding yourself if you think she doesn’t have a distinct vision for most of these songs going into a recording session and they would sound completely different and unrecognizable under a different producer

taylor is at the peak of her career and she could've just been lazy and released an album that's short, easy to digest, radio-friendly.. but instead she chose to release a 2 hour album with songs that are often confusing at first, telling a million stories from different perspectives, no uniform genre or sound, probably her rawest album ever..... her dedication to her art is unmatched

idec that this album is too long, she needed to write and get it all out and she DID !!!!! she couldn't stop writing and getting inspired !!! she kept creating!!!!! i find it inspiring idk and relatable!!! when you need to find a creative outlet for your pain and anger and anxiety and depression, you can create some pretty magnificent art. i just find it all so beautiful. i think it's a bit strange that people want to stifle that... the album is definitely long, you can't just sit back and listen to the full thing in one sitting everyday. it's okay to sit back and absorb everything, take your time with the songs. if someone is inspired and can't stop creating, why is that such a bad thing? why is it so wrong to have a long album that is BEAUTIFULLY and intricately written??? the more she creates and keeps writing i just... i'm just so so in awe of her i really am

Swifties arguing which songs are about joe and which songs are about matty when they are literally just two sides of the same “pretentious British man” coin
