Hi friends

Have you heard of A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall? I just finished it and it’s a DELIGHT.

It looks like a fairly typical Regency romance novel, and in many ways it is - there’s a ball and a duke and emotional moments on top of cliffs by the sea and distasteful suitors and an older woman who is too brash for society and a barely-there uncle who is cheerfully dim and all kinds of things you would expect.

But it’s also a story about a trans woman trying to live her life and a man with PTSD trying to figure out who he wants to be, although neither of them have the language to describe themselves as such. The author specifically set out to write a historical romance with a trans heroine where her being trans is *NOT* the central conflict and I believe he succeeded admirably. Gender is a part of the story, of course, because it can’t not be when Regency England was such a strictly gendered society, but not because of the MC’s trans identity.

Anyway, I loved it and you should read it if any of the above sounds appealing to you. You should also read Hall’s other books - Boyfriend Material is probably the biggest and I love it, but Something Fabulous is laugh out loud hilarious and one of my favorite historical romances I’ve ever read.

"when archeologists find your body theyll call you a MAN not a WOMAN" actually theyll be too busy thinking about how fucking hot i was because my bones/skeletons are that fucking good. theyre gonna want me so bad

actually i think a lot of trans people need to see this if its something really worrisome for them

A 1000 yr old skeleton was found in Finland that scientists/archaeologists say was a non-binary person. They were buried with both feminine and masculine artifacts and appeared to be a high ranking individual in their community. When humans are discovered yeeeeeeeeeeeeears after us, the archaeologists will looking at the artifacts they were buried with, the burial clothing, ect.

i dont know what TERF needs to hear this but when us trans people are skeletons being dug up in a thousand years you will also be just as dead and just as insignificant as you are now. Hope that helps.

Things I must know: are there current NHL players who remember Jack from juniors? Like did anyone else from his team in the Q get drafted? Do other players from the Q that played against Jack remember him? Do they remember him as a drunk and a dick? Do any of them have first-hand experience on the whole deal with Parse?

WHAT DO THEY REMEMBER???

Okay so the more I think about this, the more Jack and Holster’s initial relationship makes sense to me. Holster is the only other member of the SMH to have played in Juniors, and Holster is a year younger than Jack, so they would have played at the same time. We know from this extra that Holster played at Waterloo (which I’m assuming is Waterloo, NY), which given its location I’m going to assume is not part of the Q. It’s still junior hockey, though, which is a small world, because it’s probably that Holster knew of Jack during that time.

I deeply headcanon that Jack was a playboy during his time in the Q (fueled only by his constant drinking), so if Holster had heard of Jack, he probably only heard rumors, and rumors are rarely good. That makes Holster’s comment in this panel simultaneously both more confusing and more clear:

Holster thinks Jack is upstairs with a puck bunny, because that’s what he heard Jack always did in the Q, but Ransom’s comments don’t really corroborate that. Why would Jack, someone who doesn’t do parties and doesn’t do drinking, even come downstairs when one was going on? As popular as he is, it would take time to wheel a puck bunny, so what would make anyone believe that he’d willingly partake in a party atmosphere long enough to find someone to hook up with?

From Holster’s POV, however, the Jack he knows — or at least the Jack he heard rumors about — may not drink anymore, but he likes fucking around, and thus he’s probably still getting laid whenever he has the chance. Maybe that’s part of why Holster doesn’t like him, or maybe it’s just an interesting moment in the comic.
