Hi! I was looking at some of your painterly stuff, and I am in awe of the emotion, softness, and texture of the pieces. I wanted to ask what your general process of making painterly artwork is? Do you freehand without a sketch, how long it takes you to finish a piece like that, how you utilize layering, etc!

You are, of course, not obligated to share about your process or answer questions! If these questions are too invasive on your work, I completely understand. Thank you!

My process for those particular pieces is super loose! I try to use art fights as an excuse to try new color combos and try to get fast and comfy with painting bc I rarely do it it any more. But basically it looks like this!

  1. Loose sketch, I think this was the second or third sketch that I thought looked the best :)

2. I normally start with the complementary color to the character's main color (which was red here) unless I have a specific lighting goal or color palette in mind

3. I block in colors under the sketch layer! In this case I was just picking whatever colors but if I'm not feeling too confident I do color pick from photos or palettes I find on google images.

4. My emotional support overlay layer, of course <3. Not much thought process here, just trying to make it look good + more contrasty!

5. Then I make a layer on top of the sketch and just go ham! Try to separate the light and shadow, detail the teeth and stuff. I start with big blendy brushes and then scale down to smaller brushes towards the end.

All of my art fights take like 45 min-3 hrs (I definitely struggle on people faces so much). I think this one took a bit over an hour, which is where most of them fall! The one below was closer to 3, you can see I used a second sketch layer and did a lot of tweaks.

And finally, especially if you're focused on improving your skills, always collect inspiration pictures from artists who you want to emulate! My art fights draw LOADS of inspiration from @ikrutt + @polararts for example. I hope this gives you some insight to my process! As always, if you want to fuck with my brushes msg me, I can email you them :)

so which characters do you personally head cannon to have wings

Avatar

Other than Grian, the only other hermit/life series character that I headcanon as having wings is Cub! Although he keeps them tucked away most of the time. He and Scar are both infused with Vex magic, but Scar got his wings removed at some point.

As for commonly headcanoned wing havers, here's my headcanons:

  • False is completely human so has never had wings. But I feel like if she made a statue or painting of herself it would have wings (long way of saying her fursona is a bird of some sort)
  • Jimmy has some unwelcome watcher traits that he tries to ignore. Though he doesn't have wings (yet...) he does occasionally wake up from confusing prophetic doom dreams surrounded by feathers
  • Skizz is (surprisingly!) human. However he got wing tattoos based on a joke about being the angel to Impulse's devil. Which Impulse thinks is hilarious (he doesn't)

Ok and then Grian...oh boy I have a mile long list of headcanons on watcher/evo lore that I will SOME DAY get into, maybe, but its like. Its just so much and made purely for an audience of one haha. LONG STORY SHORT: he used to be human, became a watcher, now has light shapeshifting powers where he can shift between his old human form and his true watcher form. He choses a form that's in between, to his liking. Here's some rough designs of how his wings are attached and my continued attempts to nail down a bird feet design that I like ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

saw the most recent post about cOW and pluto, iโ€™d love to see tyler swift and [not] tyler swift in your style the hormses this season are so cool and your illustrations of them are just. so excellent iโ€™m in love

Avatar

A bit confused about this ask because I'm pretty sure there is only one Tyler Swift? He just needed a tune-up, what are you talking about??

(I loved this storyline so much. I love all the hormses too)

cOW is everything to me, I'm glad I can do him justice ๐Ÿฅฐ

And on that subject I just want y'all to know that telling an artist they're good at drawing horses is pretty much the highest compliment you can give an artist LOL. So thank you for all the tags, 12 yr old me is so so proud

Ok so I also just really LOVE drawing dancing, although its so hard, its almost always worth the effort! So some desertduo dancing, and a few of my other favorite team-ups ๐Ÿ’•

Headcanons ->

  • Scar is the first person to trip into a hole or fly face-first into a wall, but is an inexplicably natural dancer. He picks up any style effortlessly! This annoys Grian very much, who, though he can be 'graceful' in the air, is very clumsy on his feet.
  • Pearl and Gem's waltz is more of a duel of spinning. Who can get the other person dizzy enough to fall? This devolves into a tornado of cackling, lifting, tossing, whirling until either they both collapse or a sword fight breaks out ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's fine, a sword fight has to break out at a party for either to consider it a success.
  • Cleo and Etho dance like they have no plan whatsoever. They are dancing with different styles to different tunes in their heads but somehow it just works? Toes are getting stepped on and elbows are getting bruised but they don't seem to notice or mind. This dance has worked for them for years, no reason to change it up now!
