i got a bachelor in physics since i last was on here, it was difficult due to my autoimmune disease, but i did it. currently taking a bit chiller semester, but that means i can focus on a course in quantum field theory!! i just recently admitted that half the reason i continued with physics was that i promised myself i would take particle physics and quantum field theory, and i just did not realise how long that would take to build up a good enough foundation. and yet, after this summer i’ve hopefully done both.

very rarely i remember that tumblr exists. that said, congrats to a platform for being so unconnected from the rest of them and yet having so much influence. if there’s something i’ve learned from being casually on tumblr since i was 11 years old it is that not all internet politics/identity related questions are in bad faith, the person on the other side might just be 11 years old (or might as well be, in having never previously thought about a topic). i genuinely often see this in tiktok comments. but also one of the things that got me off the platform the first time was the 2016 Russian bots invasion.

I rewatched the hunger games movies and I do not really agree with the idea of Snow relating young Snow to Peeta and Lucy to Katniss making much sense. Peeta and Lucy seems much more alike (performers, struggling but not starving, place value in remaining themselves through it all), but mostly young Snow and Katniss. I think Snow sees Katniss as someone who wants to survive on her own terms (not Capitol's) more than she loves Peeta, also at the end of the first games. I think in a version where Snow is not preoccupied with rebellion, he could mold Katniss to be a good propagandist maybe except needing to keep Katniss away from direct contact with most tributes.

I had no interest in reading the ballad of songbirds and snakes until the movie was nearly upon us. In the end I have a few issues mainly with the storytelling of it, but I did also fall down the rabbit hole of the whole hunger games again. I think mostly it was a book written with "movie" already etched into the paper, but that also makes me hopeful the visual elements will fix or at least smooth over a lot of the narrative choices. Generally to write either a morally gray character or a villain origin story in book format, there needs to be a lot of thought put into how to support elements that no longer fall in place naturally. For example, it was hard to care for Lucy Gray Baird because Snow didn't flesh her out as a full person, for obvious reasons. On screen, that isn't as much of an issue. And it seemed written for the screen because the book has scenes made seemingly for side characters to show love and compassion for each other, yet those become boring with an self-centered mind as a wall between the words of the scene and the reader.

At the very least the book could've chosen to showcase a truly morally-gray-turned-fully-evil Snow instead of being afraid of losing the reader to an unlikeable mc. Or showcased some of his personality traits / mental health / morals deteriorating where I'm sure it's not far-fetched to both showcase a narrative where he claims to be in charge of his actions while there's also a question of him being in psychosis or similar. It's not enough to put dark moments if you want a teen growing up to be a mass murderer, there needs to be some choices that he's a part of along the way or similar. At certain points even a truly jealous Snow would've been preferable, or a bored one. In wanting to make him logical and clever, but also ambitious and frightened, there's not enough room for a good backstory.

"Help spread awareness and share our post. We need all the support we can get. The Norwegian government must respect the Supreme Court ruling. We demand them to take down the wind turbines, restore and return the land to fosen sámis." - @nsr_nuorat

"The ongoing Human Right violation in Southern Sápmi. Oct 11th 2021 the Supreme Court of Norway concluded that the wind power plant you see on the picture violates sámi and human rights, and is therefore illegal.

ICCPR Article 27 is the foundation of this case. ICCPR Article 27 states that:

"In those States in which ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities exist, persons belonging to such minorities shall not be denied the right, in community with the other members of their group, to enjoy their own culture, to profess and practise their own religion, or to use their own language."

The powerplant makes reindeer husbandry impossible for the sámis in the district, as reindeers avoid industry such as this. And therefore is sámi culture denied. Almost one year has past cince the verdict, but the state of Norway closes their eyes and let the turbines turn, neglecting their own highest court." - Beaska Niillas

The Art of Heikala | Book Review

Pages: 152 Genre: nonfiction – art Heikala is a finnish artist drawing a lot of inspiration from both Finnish illustrations and Japanese animation in their artwork. I first noticed her because of the witch and wizard cat character series she did (in 2016/2017) and fell in love with the soft nature scenes, often with a layer of magic to it. It’s both a visually stunning book from a great…

Writing project & having an autoimmune disease

This is terrifying to admit, but I nearly have a first draft of a novel. It’s not that uncommon for readers to figure out they want to produce something themselves, but it’s still a new thing to me. What makes it even more terrifying is that the beginning, a lot of middle parts and the ending is written, there’s just scenes in between not written out. Mostly because I very much discover the story…

Books Read in 2022: a summary

My reading this year has been about 65% of what it was in 2021. I thought it was a lot less, because I have read less books in total, but number of books is such a weird way to count «reading» in general. Time would be a great, but difficult way to count, amount of pages is at least better I think? I did start out the year getting my heart broken by a book in the worst possible way, by “The…
