I want to make sure everyone actually understands the severity of this.

When we say that 1.4 million people in Rafah have nowhere to go we are also talking about how Israel had taken over Rafah crossing, which is the sole access point for Gazans, preventing the movement of people and goods as a result.

For the past 7 months you've heard of famine and witnessed infants dying of severe dehydration. This is only going to exacerbate now that the only source of the already scarce resources of food and water is completely shut down.

For the past 7 months you have seen how many people Israel's weapons have severely injured and maimed and how the only remaining cancer hospital was also taken over by Israel. The situation of these people who are injured and sick is only going to get worse because despite them obtaining permits to leave Gaza for treatment, there is no way out anymore.

For the past 7 months you have seen countless people crowdfunding to evacuate their families and flee genocide. None of these efforts are going to go anywhere and no one would be allowed out of Gaza for the foreseeable future, while Israel goes on with its barbaric mission of attempting to annihilate the people of Gaza.

Absolutely no access. Everyone is trapped. Nowhere to go.

Note to vacationing non-Americans: while itโ€™s true that America doesnโ€™t always have the best food culture, the food in our restaurants is really not representative of what most of us eat at home.ย  The portions at Cheesecake Factory or IHOP are meant to be indulgent, not justย โ€œwhat Americans are used to.โ€

If you eat at a regular American household, during a regular meal where theyโ€™re not going out of their way to impress guests, you probably will not be served twelve pounds of chocolate-covered cream cheese.ย  Please bear this in mind before writing yet another โ€œomg I canโ€™t believe American foodโ€ post.

Also, most American restaurant portions are 100% intended as two mealsโ€™ worth of food. Some of my older Irish relatives still struggle with the idea that itโ€™s not just not rude to eat half your meal and take the rest home, itโ€™s expected. (Apparently this is somewhat of an American custom.)

Until youโ€™re hitting the โ€œfancy restaurantโ€ tier (the kind of place you go for a celebration or an anniversary date), a dinner out should generally also be lunch for the next day. Leftovers are very much the norm.

From the little time Iโ€™ve spent in Canada, this seems to be the case up there as well.

the portions in family restaurants (as opposed to haute cuisine types) are designed so that no one goes away hungry.

volume IS very much a part of the american hospitality tradition, and Nobody Leaves Hungry is important. but you have to recognize that itโ€™s not how we cook for ourselves, itโ€™s how we welcome guests and strengthen community ties.

so in order to give you a celebratory experience and make you feel welcomed, family restaurants make the portions big enough that even if youโ€™re a teenage boy celebrating a hard win on the basketball court, youโ€™re still going to be comfortably full when you leave.

of course, that means that for your average person with a sit-down job, who ate a decent lunch that day, itโ€™s twice as much as they want or more. thatโ€™s ok. as mentioned above, taking home leftovers is absolutely encouraged. that, too, is part of american hospitality tradition; itโ€™s meant to invoke fond memories of grandma loading you down with covered dishes so you can have hearty celebration food all week. pot luck church basement get-togethers where the whole town makes sure everybody has enough. that sort of thing. itโ€™s about sharing. itโ€™s about celebrating Plenty.

itโ€™s not about pigging out until you get huge. treating it that way is pretty disrespectful of our culture. and you know, contrary to what the world thinks, we do have one.

Reblogging because I honestly never thought about it but yeah, this lines up.

This is also why the idea of โ€œpay a lot for fancy food on tiny platesโ€ pisses so many Americans off. Unless you are rich enough not to care about throwing your money away, itโ€™s not just a ridiculous ripoff in terms of not filling you up, itโ€™s stingy. Restaurants are places of hospitality. If I pay that much for a plate it had better be damn good and it had better be generous. Otherwise they are just trying to fleece me out of my money AND saying they donโ€™t value me as a customer.

If I go to IHOP or Olive Garden or whatnot, I absolutely donโ€™t need to eat again until evening if I had leftovers, and until the next day if I did eat everything (you canโ€™t really take pancakes home as leftovers).

But EVEN IF I DID EAT EVERYTHING and then ate a full meal on top of that, later, itโ€™s really not anyoneโ€™s place to criticize what other people eat. It just isnโ€™t. Let it go. Itโ€™s old.

Making fun of American food culture and food habits isnโ€™t original or surprising or witty or funny or getting one over on us or crafting a clever retort or whatever. Itโ€™s lazy and petty and childish.

Yeah, we eat a lot of hamburgers. Theyโ€™re fucking delicious. Cope.

"Most of Sudan is only one step away from a full blown famine. In a lot of areas the only thing stopping people starving is the presence of community kitchens. This is why we setup 3 kitchens in Khartoum State and are in the process of setting up a 4th. But there has been a massive drop off in donations after Ramadan. Please help with what you can.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ the University of New Mexico is camping for for a free Palestine!! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ

UNM is not happy about this

our encampment lives!! we made it through night 1!!!

[ID: a cardboard sign saying "cops go home we're staying"]

Day 3 of the encampment!! we're still here!!!

Day 4!!! we are not leaving until UNM divests!!

[ID: A lamp post with the Palestine flag hanging from it. a sign says "the revolution will be incentivized feed the people protect the people house the people educate the people" a sign below it says "cease fire" in all caps]

Day 5!!!

numbers dwindled as dead week approaches. we only had ~11 people this night. cops left expired citations early in the night but left and did not return! one demonstrated real maturity (/sarcasm) by putting an L to their forehead while passing us

we are still here and we will be here until UNM divests!!

police raided camp, stole a bunch of shit we are allowed to have, and then assaulted someone at the camp.

day 6! last night police gave notice that we are not allowed to sleep there anymore. they harassed the group 4 times during the night to make sure no one was sleeping. people stayed overnight with little to no rest.

day 7! resident life and student housing wants us gone by Monday. we have no plans to leave. last night the cops visited several times but most of the time they left before reaching camp. one of the times that they made it to camp they pushed me around alongside at least 2 other people. no one was injured or arrested.

if anyone could support us with some phone calls we could really use some help. police have been becoming increasingly violent. in particular officer Nicole Thorn (badge # 1238) and Travis Lente (badge # 1252) have been violent towards students. please help by calling the following numbers and demanding that, at minimum, they be reassigned due to their pattern of escalation and aggression. PROTECT THE PACK! HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS!

Joseph Silva, Chief (505)277-1933

Christine Chandler, Deputy Chief (505)277-1934

Arturo Gonzalez, Commander, (505)277-3065

Tim Stump, Commander, (505)277-1935

Pete Guevera, Lieutenant, (505)277-0992

cops came by again and shoved me again. this time not just shoulder checking me but using their hands to full force shove me. I was the only one shoved and I was not injured. they are planning to remove us tonight and if they're using this much force in the daytime they will only use more at night.

[ID: a sign with a duck on the left wearing a kufiya. on the right it says "UNM Divests Dislocate Declare These are our demands" in all caps]

the camp survived the night! happy day 8!!!

we! are! still! here!

RLSH still wants us gone today so we'll likely be facing violence from the police. we're very worried about the possibility of tear gas being deployed in camp. we are prepared for this but calling UNM PD is so helpful. let them know that the world is watching them and that they will not get away with harming us.

today we're holding a rally and march at 6pm. we demand:

Declare; a public call for ceasefire and an end to the occupation

Disclosure; of all UNM investments

Divestment; from all companies involved in the genocide of Palestinians

[ID: a pillar in a building with art on it saying "FREE GAZA LIBERATION NOW" with a watermelon]

We took the student union building!!!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

28+ state police cars outside, 10+ UNM PD, no arrests so far

multiple people were maced and arrested but we held the building until about 4am

camp is back up!

one of my friends was pretty badly beaten by riot police

camp is still going! it's day 10? 11? I've lost track I pulled an all nighter yesterday it doesn't feel like the protest was two nights ago. a total of 16 people were arrested and many people experienced police brutality. multiple people sustained injuries from the police. almost, if not all, of our comrades are out of jail

what went down in nyc at columbia and city college was a massive escalation and a huge show of violent force from the police in what is already one of the heaviest policed cities in the country, if not the world. sending hundreds if not thousands of riot cops, counter terrorism, SWAT and NYPD's notorious SRG units armed with what is basically military equipment to beat up college students and barricade columbia faculty into their apartments. the fact that they removed all press from campus and refused to let journalists in before they swept the camp is very concerning. a lot of journalists said this was an unprecedented use of force even for the NYPD and it seemed like an excuse for them to use a lot of their new equipment. NYPD reportedly entered with guns drawn. out of around 300 people arrested on tuesday, some still havent been released or even processed. this is illegal in new york state btw, people have to be arraigned within 24 hours. NYPD has been giving very little information about the people detained, not specifying where theyre being held, and taking a suspiciously long time to process them. they're apparently trying to charge some protestors with felonies. anyways all this is to say this is a major escalation from NYPD and a grim sign for the future. this is a prelude to fascism, not an alternative.

the sound of police helicopters has been constant for days. not to mention that we already have the national guard and increased police presence in subway stations because of the "crime wave"

As a rule of thumb, don't reblog donation posts or people asking for donations unless they've been vetted and reblogged by Palestinian bloggers. We usually go to lengths to verify this shit because we know scammers have been faking to get people to send them money, using the urgency of our genocide as bait.

It's disgusting this is what we're dealing with, but people are losing money because of some truly evil people out there.

Accounts don't just randomly spring up on tumblr without gofundmes while asking for someone to help them create a campaign. Fuck out of here with that shit.

I'm also gonna stop listing the reasons why I recognize something is a scam. It's becoming more and more clear there is 1 person behind this STRING of scams and they're leaving less trails behind but it still reeks of them and their MO.

DO NOT TRUST ANY GOFUNDME OR REQUEST FOR CROWDFUNDING THAT PALESTINIAN BLOGGERS HAVEN'T VERIFIED.

At this point I'm fine receiving a bunch of inbox messages asking me to vet x y z so y'all can avoid this shit. But please have some critical thinking!

People are exploiting our situation.

Reblog this post.

Whether you wanna read the whole thing or not idc.

REBLOG IT.

The person this was about deleted the 4th or 5th scam account they made and are definitely gonna make a new one soon. I don't want anybody falling for this anymore.
