The Void Within

For @tolkienvillainsweek Day 1: Melkor

What do you mean I’m a week late?

In the void, Melkor struggles with the loss of the silmarils. At first, the lack of their light tears him apart, but after awhile, their influence begins to fade. Instead of bringing relief, his clearer mind forces him to face the memories of his own failures, knowing he cannot change the choices he made or the suffering he brought upon his most devoted servant.

TOLKIEN VILLAINS WEEK: A THANK YOU!

The first ever Tolkien Villains Week is officially over, and the event wishes to thank all its participants! This year, we got 107 official submissions of beautiful art, fanfiction, meta and cosplay, all celebrating Tolkien’s villains - a great amount for a first-time event! Organizing this event was a joy, and we truly hope it also brought you joy by offering you creations of both hated and loved characters, and by giving new food for thought on the nature of Tolkien’s villains.

If you wish for this event to grow even bigger and better in the future, feel free to send your thoughts and feedback to @tolkienvillainsweek - what did you enjoy, or do you think that something needs improvement? Feel free to open up about your thoughts through the ask box.

There are still some submissions in the queue, so if your post has not appeared yet, do not worry - it is most likely in the queue. However, if more than 24 hours has passed from your submission and it still has not arrived, feel free to message @tolkienvillainsweek or mod @falindis for support. The submission form is also still open, and we do take late submissions: just tag your work with #tolkienvillainsweek and mention the blog, or use the form.

Once more - thank you!

Posted (belatedly) for day 3 of @tolkienvillainsweek, ‘creatures and minions of evil’, for the incomparable @lemurious from whose story A Few Trusty Lads Mauhúr is borrowed!

It’s the final day of @tolkienvillainsweek! Mini Mairon gets to hot tub in a cup of tea today. ♨ I couldn’t get him any lava, but hopefully this is hot enough. :]

Thanks so much for this new event! I had fun each day using different art styles for so many of my fav villains. I’ve been fed well with all the villain art posted by everyone else too. I’m still going through and thoroughly enjoying it! :D

Evil Biomes

But in the north Melkor built his strength, and he slept not, but watched, and laboured; and the evil things that he had perverted walked abroad, and the dark and slumbering woods were haunted by monsters and shapes of dread…And in that dark time Melkor bred many other monsters of divers shapes and kinds that long troubled the world; and his realm spread now ever southward over Middle-earth.  - Silmarillion, JrrT

So did Melkor and Sauron make their evil critters just for the aesthetic, or is there maybe more to it?

If you’ve ever played through Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, you know how annoying it is to try to get through the creature infested planes of oblivion on your way to a fortress. You clear away a pack of clawing, fire spitting scamps only to get chased down by an enormous daedroth trying to stomp and chomp you, and after landing the killing blow you’re down to one bar of health. Trying to avoid detection you take cover by a cliff, waiting for your mana to refill so you can heal yourself, and then the innocent tangle of vines growing on the rocks perks up and bitch-slaps you to game over.

Tragedies like these are exactly why a dark lord should invest in their own garden of horror. An evil biome around a fortress is a girdle of watchmen who are always on duty and never need rations or armor or orders, because fully mature and stable ecosystems maintain themselves.  And not only does an evil biome cut the expenses of guarding against outsiders, but it also enhances the level of control a dark lord can exert over their own people. Instructions on how to traverse the land safely  - what to avoid and what tricks to use to repel anything that can’t be avoided - are secrets of immense value. This knowledge is like a key to a lock; it allows people easy entry to an area which is otherwise hard to break into. The dark lord can then choose who is privy to these “keys”, only divulging the crucial information to high ranking individuals, so escape remains a risky gamble for the enslaved majority.

In conclusion: evil biomes are a dark lord’s best friend, and harrada roots should be removed from Oblivion.

Written for the @tolkienvillainsweek , check it out if you haven't already - it is a trove of treasures.

The day when the Light of the Trees was gone forever did not start successfully for Mairon. Shortly before the lights of Telperion and Laurelin mixed above the peaks of the Iron Mountains, his best werewolf bitch died in labour. The process was going slower than expected, so the day before Mairon had left her with the Orc overseers. He had to manage the supply caravans, then there were other matters to attend to… when he returned mere twenty hours later, she was already dead. Apparently, the overseer got sick with rash and diarrhea and another idiot was assigned to his place. He ignored the werewolf howling and biting on the metal bars of her cage, and when he did call someone professional, it was too late. Mairon's feistiest, toothiest bitch was gone, not to mention her whole litter.
