Hands rest upon Dave’s shoulders , hanging off of him as he stands behind him , waiting for him to close out his tab . He’s not really thinking about being shrugged off or elbowed away . Hell , they both likely need to physically rely on one another in order to get their asses out of the building . When Dave finally turns around , Gabriel takes a step back , anticipating a push , only to look foolish when Dave takes hold of his shoulder .
A light laugh slips out from relief, eyes landing on the guy he had pick-pocketed minutes earlier , who is now bending over to pick up the now-empty wallet . “Oh shit ! ” another laugh blurts out , and he wipes the teary residue from eyes before taking hold of Dave’s arm , “ We have to fucking GO, like now ! ” Gabriel shouts , tripping over his own feet while dragging Dave out with him . When they finally make their near-fumbled escape , he pins his friend up against the wall , adrenaline pumping so much he can’t help but give him an exhilarated kiss , pulling away just as quickly , knowing it would be unwelcome .
“ Can we get some pie instead ? ” It’s asked breathlessly , holding the wad of cash he had secured up against Dave’s chest .
I fumbled out the door with Gabriel’s help, trying to play it off when we made it out the door by slowing down just enough to be caught completely off-guard by the wall my back collided with and the warm mouth suddenly pressed against mine. And as quickly as it happened it was over. I let out a breath that had apparently been stuck in my chest, shaking it off as my mind creating a moment that never happened. My eyes darted down the the wad of cash, one hand brushing up against his to take it, “Uh yeah, it’s still your birthday...? Where’d you even get this?”
I shook my head, “I’ll take it for playing chauffeur but I’ll pay for the pie with my own cash. You can’t pay for your own birthday dessert, it’s a law I think.” I had slipped out from between him and the wall, letting it guide me into the parking lot to the parked car. I glanced back at him, “You wanna look up a diner or something nearby?”

A sudden uproar of singing echoes within the room . Gabriel wasn’t expecting the group of women to serenade him with the birthday song , but who is he to deny the influx of shots being poured in front of him ? He downs a few , leaning in close to the brunette he had initially been talking to , wry grin prominent as he distracts her with a kiss . It’s enough for people around them to look away ( enough for Gabriel to pick the wallet out of the pocket of the man standing next to him ) .
It’s only when standing , pocketing cash and letting wallet fall to the ground , that he feels the dizzying effects of the vodka surge through his body . He almost forgets about the arms draped around him , and the stranger he had been charming . She thinks that he’s picked her to go home with for the night , and he knows that means he has to cut out . He excuses himself —— to take a leak , he says . In reality he’s sauntering back to his designated driver .
“ Hey… ” a sniff follows rattled voice , “ Party’s cashed . We should , uh… ” watered eyes look down at nails that are currently scratching at the counter anxiously , and he forces a smile , “ You make-out with one chick , and suddenly your OFF FUCKING LIMITS to everyone else . What the fuck ?! ”
"Whatever you want, it's your birthday, right?" I shrugged. I had been sitting there waiting for so long, not only had I gotten through the shots but I'd managed to down three beers. And I didn't even want to start on the ethics of his hookups, so I stood up, using Gabriel's bicep to pull myself to my feet, leaning on the counter to call out to the bartender. I settled up, using the counter to help me get used to being back on my feet while I waited for the room to stop spinning.
"Ugh, c'mon, I need something to soak up the alcohol anyway. I'll get you a slice of cake or whatever." My arm stayed on his shoulder, hand tightening a little when I could feel my balance wavering, guiding up through the crowds towards the exit and home-free for the night.
i was vaccinated on monday night and honestly still have residual effects but it feels great emotionally.
