I don’t usually promote things but one can’t pass such opportunity. A special event for some of the best Tomb Raider music organized by the fans and the composer himself will come to reality only if there’s enough support. With only about 2 weeks left I don’t know how this will turn out. Regardless, goodluck to all the talented people involved in this project! Fingers crossed!

Peter Connelly announces Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony

Legendary Tomb Raider™ composer announces fan-driven Kickstarter campaign to bring beloved videogame soundtrack to life!

London, August 27th, 2018.

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of composer Peter Connelly’s first work on the Tomb Raider™ franchise. To celebrate this landmark event, Connelly is announcing today that he is launching a crowdfunding campaign (via Kickstarter) to produce a studio album featuring the music from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles and, most excitingly of all, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. This campaign has been organised entirely by a dedicated group of die-hard Tomb Raider™ fans and features world-class names within the music industry.

For nearly 20 years, Connelly and Tomb Raider™ fans have dreamed of hearing these beloved musical scores on a fully mastered studio album. Now, thanks to the crowd-funding power of Kickstarter, they have their chance to realise this dream. This campaign will be launched on the 1st October 2018.

The album will not be a direct copy of the original Tomb Raider™ games’ scores, although it will remain faithful to those classic soundtracks. The music will be transformed and rearranged using techniques and personnel that were simply not available or within reach 15–20 years ago. Connelly intends to bring the musical compositions and recordings up to date and provide the listener, not only a sense of nostalgia, but with a whole new experience of this familiar and much-loved Tomb Raider™ music.

The original versions of Connelly’s pieces will also be made available, properly remastered and beautifully presented, to tie-in with the new orchestral album so that fans can enjoy the original scores in the best possible quality.

Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony has been in development for about two years. This project is – uniquely – driven and arranged entirely “by the fans, for the fans” and sanctioned by Square Enix Europe and Crystal Dynamics.

Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony treats old and new fans alike to the finest musicians, sound engineers and arrangers in the world, including:

  • Dr Richard Niles – Orchestrator / Arranger / Musician. “One of the most versatile men in modern music”, who has worked alongside such musical legends such as Paul McCartney, the Pet Shop Boys (“Left to my Own Devices” http://bit.ly/29fgxMk), Ray Charles, Cher, James Brown, Kylie Minogue, Tears for Fears (“Sowing The Seeds of Love” http://bit.ly/1iybTmN), Tina Turner, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, Swing Out Sister, Take That, and Grammy- and Ivor Novello Award-winning producer Trevor Horn CBE (“The Man Who Invented The Eighties”).
  • Isobel Griffiths – Orchestra contractor. A frequent collaborator of Richard Niles, she has also worked with Hans Zimmer, Howard Shaw, and James Horner (to name but a few) in hand-picking musicians for orchestral ensembles.
  • Martin Iveson (Atjazz) – Musician, Composer, and Audio Production/ Mastering specialist with a long history of working in videogames and the music industry.
  • More special guests to be announced soon!

The studio album will be recorded at the prestigious Air Lyndhurst Studios, London. This state-of-the-art studio has the perfect facilities to achieve the album’s production requirements.

Artwork, promotional material, pledge rewards, websites and social media feeds, pamphlets and miscellany are also being produced by Connelly’s team. Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will have the chance to obtain rare and sought-after Tomb Raider™ merchandise and exclusive memorabilia.

it’s interesting to me that the reboot tomb raider games are primarily criticized on the basis of lara’s humanity. i hardly hear anything about the mechanics or the actual story. the loudest criticisms are about lara’s emotions or her body. she’s too whiny or not badass enough. she cries too much, she relies on her friends too often. she’s not as cool as past incarnations, she’s ugly. she doesn’t explore enough, she’s not skilled enough.

but the purpose of a reboot is to create a new tomb raider. it’s to explore lara’s backstory from a different angle. i don’t think any of you were ever actually fans of the old tomb raider. if you’re mad about lara croft being portrayed realistically, then you never saw her as a human being in the first place.

and by interesting i mean boring.

No, the point of the reboot is to cash in on the iconic name, image, and fan base of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft without doing the hard work of creating something original. If you took the Tomb Raider title away and changed Lara’s name to something else, in these new games, all you have is a generic predictable story with a whiny protagonist who doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Instead of being an innovated game, like it once was, it just copies from other games (assassins creed, uncharted, ect..).

I have no issue with creating a ‘realistic’ depiction of Lara. I think there could be some really interesting stories that could come from that. But when you change the story from an independent woman exploring and tomb raiding because she enjoys it and is doing it because she wants to, to being a someone who just wants to finish what her father started or follow in his footsteps is an overplayed storyline that isn’t inspiring. (I mean the Angelina Jolie movies did that and fans hated that storyline.)

But the irony in making this character more ‘realistic’ in these new games is that all that was created was a murder. “10) Only six people are killed throughout the original Tomb Raider. Sure, Lara ventilates a good number of lions, gorillas and dinos in the game, but human beings? A mere six die throughout the title. Multiply that by around 100 to get Lara’s kill count in the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot.” (Uproxx.com)

The one thing you do have right is that I never saw Lara, in the original games or even in these new games, as a human because she is a video game character. I know the difference between fact and fiction and I didn’t need to relate to someone to enjoy the game. The enjoyment of the original games comes from the no bullshit attitude of the character, which made the cutscenes amusing, and the puzzles. Sure you could get her backstory through the guides or other outside sources but you didn’t need them to enjoy the game.
