Gilbert and Lorenzo meet online because they both are huge fans of this video game and they look for other people that like it. Lorenzo is the one who initiates contact because he really likes Gilbert’s writing. It feels so wonderfully fluid and transports him to a world he wishes he could be a part of.
Gilbert could say the same about him. He thinks Lorenzo has this way with words that gives Gibert this feeling he hasn't experienced before. They both just click because they write like overly pretentious old men, they both love classic rock, and they both want to go to this convention in their town in a few months.
That’s how they bond. They share all their work for each other, beta for each other, leave long reviews for each other. They send stupid little messages and funny little text faces. (’pewish >:3c’ for example) It doesn’t take long for them to consider each other close friends.
But, things get complicated as the time for the convention nears because Gilbert only revealed his voice to Lore and Lore only shows his face. Obviously, it’s kinda hard to talk to each other or video chat or even talk about meeting each other when one won’t talk and the other is faceless.
Gilbert is just kinda anxious about Lore finding out he’s albino. He knows it’s not a big deal, but he doesn’t want to get weird reactions from him or get treated like he is incapable of doing things on his own, especially since he has some visual impairments as a side effect of his albinism that mean he often does need help getting around.
And as for Lorenzo, he hasn’t revealed his voice because he doesn’t have one. He’s mute.
The convention rolls around and Lorenzo decides he’ll just hope Gilbert isn’t a catfish and sit there waiting for him. He tells him to meet him in the gaming area and sends a picture of his cosplay.
Lore practices how he’s gonna tell him that he’s mute a million times to make things smooth and not awkward. He’s excited to meet his best friend and hang out with him in person after months of talking just on the internet.
That day of the con has flown by and nothing.
Lorenzo enjoys the rest of it and goes home. Gilbert doesn’t even text him an apology. It doesn’t matter. Not as if Lore would have responded.
A few days after the convention, Gilbert texts him.
I’m really sorry I left you hanging at the con. Would you please consider meeting with me again?
Lorenzo doesn’t answer at first, but he’s angry and he wants an answer. So he tells him if he bails again, he’s not going to talk to him again.
Gilbert doesn’t bail this time.
When the day to meet comes, Lorenzo heads to park Gilbert told him to go to at the playground he requested as well. He’s sitting on a bench feeding some peas to the ducks when someone sits down next to him.
He can’t see their face because they are hiding behind a hoodie, a big scarf, and sunglasses. He scoots away and he hears a very familiar laugh.
“Please don’t tell me I look like that much of a creep.”
Gilbert reveals himself and Lorenzo is a bit shocked but also piecing together why he probably didn’t want to show his face to him. Of course, since he can’t speak, Gilbert is getting a bit uncomfortable.
“Come on, say something. You’ve seen my face, can I hear your voice?”
Lore pulls out his phone and starts typing (much to Gilbert’s offense. Imagine him with a “>:0″ face).
“Are you gonna ignore me? I thought we were meeting up to talk?”
and then the robotic voice of his phone speaks.
“I am mute you dumbass motherfucker. I was going to tell you that at the convention, but your pussy ass left me waiting.”
And Gilbert’s face just goes :0
Much to Lorenzo’s relief, Gilbert knows ASL. So they talk back and forth and things are nice. They both kinda laugh at the fact that they were really shy about admitting this but also don’t blame the other.
Now Lorenzo is designing cosplays for Gilbert to wear and he visits him to watch movies. They love being around each other and knowing they always have someone who is willing to listen.
Gil and Lore become roommates (and they were roommates) after Gil’s brother moves away so that Lorenzo can help him get around when he needs it.
They fall in love without knowing when. Maybe it was in between those late night movie marathons where they’d hug each other a little too close. Or maybe it was when they cosplayed one of their ships from their favorite show together. Maybe it was that night they got into an intense debate on Prussian history and Gilbert screamed: “USE YOUR INSIDE HANDS” to which Lorenzo fell over. Maybe it had been those moments they went out together where they didn’t even need let a word out to know what the other was thinking. Maybe it was the fact that sometimes they fell asleep watching movies and when they woke up, Lorenzo would be hugging Gilbert close and Gilbert would be nuzzling his hair. There were many things that it could have been.
Whatever it was, one day when they were asked if they were dating when they went to a convention, they looked at each other for a moment before nodding, not saying no for once.
They’re the cutest nerd couple you’d ever meet.
