He had another child? Greil was astounded by this, staring blankly as the girl hugged him tight. There was no recognition in his eyes; his confusion resurfaced, just as fierce as before. He hated it. She threw her hands around his neck and wept, careful to avoid his injured side. She cared about him; cared enough to weep and purposely keep from hurting him further.
Despite his inability to recognize her, Greil snakes an arm around her back. The poor girl was shaking from the weight of all her tears and sorrow. As her father, he had to help her. Something, deep within the recesses of his mind, demanded that the girl be consoled.
“Mist,” he says, deducing her name from what the boy tries to say. He was Isaac, he said. No – Ike. Ike sounded right, for some reason. “You and Ike were so worried about me. I’m sorry.”
Mist parts from the hug, her eyes wide. “No, it’s okay! So long as you’re alright.”
“I …” He looks into those eyes, which profoundly pleaded with him to be alright. “I am. Can you get me some water, please?”
“Okay!” Mist’s tone is earnest despite her tears. “But I’ll be back soon. If you need anything, call for me or Rhys!”
Who?
“I will,” he mutters, and turns to Ike once she leaves. “I couldn’t tell her, Ike. I … I don’t know what to do. You said you all need me, right? But what can I even do for you, as I am?”

      ⚔

You’re... our leader, is all Ike can say.  He doesn’t really have an actual answer.  Surely they’ll have to tell the others, tell every one the exacting truth of the situation, but for now, every one would be expectantly awaiting Greil to wake up and grab his axe, and lead them off to continue their job.  Surviving such a dangerous blow by that dark knight is something of a miracle, and Ike is, of course, grateful for it.  But he didn’t survive with his memory, and no matter what happens, that will be a problem.

If that knight comes back with the same questions and drive to fell his father, what will happen to him in this state??

Ike’s hands are clasped before him, fingers interlaced, and it draws his gaze to them.  He stares without seeing.  There’s a numbness permeating him entirely.  What could even make that go away??  Another question: does he want it to go away??  They don’t exactly have time to cry, as it is.  Daein could attack at any moment.

❝ Every one is going to look to you for answers, or guidance...  But it’s unreasonable to ask of you, as it is.   That’s the truth, he feels.  If his father needs anything right now, it’s rest, and vulnerary, and anything else that could help him heal.  They can worry about everything else once he starts recovering.

What if he never gets his memory back??  That hurts.

If he’d have died, Ike would be the new leader of their mercenary band.  This isn’t a death -- it’s not a death at all, it’s so much better than that option -- but his father is still in no condition to be leading them instead.

Ike brings his gaze back to his father’s, steely and determined.  He’s expectant.  There’s no reason his father should be able to answer his next question, but he voices it anyway.  He needs to.

❝ You had said that there would be a time that I’d inherit command of the Greil Mercenaries.  Do you think I’m ready enough to try, until you can come back??

His practice session had begun like any other–easy warm-up swings progressing to increasingly complicated moves. He knows his craft ( and himself ) well enough to know that today is a good one, his movements swifter and more powerful than usual.
Perhaps he became a little complacent, a little too confident in the swing of his blade, for the next thing he knows he’s all but bowled over a training dummy. It shatters under the force of his blow, and he winces, shielding his eyes against the splinters–for better or worse, he’s broken enough training dummies that the movement is almost an instinct.
Gods, he hopes that no one saw that, that he can just pick up the pieces and dispose of them somewhere with no one the wiser. But alas, a groggy voice calls out to him, and he winces.
“I’m fine!” he calls back, finally noticing the other lounging in the shade. “Just an accident–it happens. Er…sorry to wake you. Guess I got a little carried away.”

      ⚔

The grip on Ike’s sword loosens as he realizes it’s really nothing more than as he saw.  ...He should probably get up anyway, if people are going to be noisy around him.  Nice nap, cut short too soon, oh well.  Ike rolls his head around his shoulders before standing, working out any stiffness left in his form.

❝ It’s alright,  he dismisses.   Accidents happen.

Maybe it’s a little extreme for an accident, but Ike’s not judging.

❝ Need help cleaning it up??

“ hm? ah no…this not why … I assumed your resistance towards magic might be similar to Chrom’s” Ike and Chrom were simple warriors and from Robin experiment. Maybe to rules in Ike’s realm are different? hm.
“ This why I was cautious. Not wanting to exactly shock you, you know? But I try to remember that next battle” a small hum “…talking about Soren, I assume?” Robin didn’t know the other strategist well outside of tactical meetings. But it was obvious he and Ike are close friends.
Image
Taking a look around, make sure that really everything is clear before looking up “ hm… well, I don’t think we will reach the castle before dark, the sun already starts setting. so, we better head back now”

      ⚔

Ike nods.  Robin is right -- his time fighting alongside Soren means Ike doesn’t feel the same anxiety when there’s a spell hot on the wind’s breath.  Though he isn’t as suited towards fighting with a thunder mage as a wind mage, all magic has that tingle that makes your hair stand on end.  Feeling something suddenly appear beside you is not something that comes naturally to non-mages.  Ike learned how to deal with it.

He rests his sword over his shoulder.  What happens if he cuts through this fancy coat slung carelessly around his shoulders??  Could he go back to wearing normal clothes again??

❝ I didn’t mean to sound angry, I appreciate the concern, but it’s fine.  I trust you won’t hit me.  You’re the mage.

He closed the distance between them.

❝ Let’s get going, then.  Good job, today.

well… this was unexpected. you blink once, twice, in response to ike’s words. they’re not unkind– despite the rather stoic expression and gruff tone, the question is one born of kindness. all the same   your smile fades, replaced by a furrowed brow and tilt of the head– a clear display of confusion. he thinks… you’re doing too much? honestly, it feels like too little
it’s felt like too little for a very long time. too little, too late… unable to please everyone, unable to avoid hurting those you love no matter what you try, unable to escape the maze… how long has it been now? you can hardly remember… all you know is that you cannot stop, you cannot give up, no matter how little your actions amount to in the grand scheme of things…
is it any wonder that you’d want to reduce the burden you’re placing on those who chose to follow you as much as possible? not that you could ever explain to sir ike in full just why you’re determined to on so much responsibility… he would think you delusional.
this time, though, a little voice in the corner of your mind whispers, this time things may be different.
the spark of hope flickering in your chest helps you return a gaze you hadn’t realized you’d dropped when the mercenary spoke, and another soft, albeit awkward chuckle slips past rosy lips.
Image
“it can be a little difficult to keep up, i’ll admit, but i’m used to it. i can manage. if worst comes to worst, i know i can ask jakob or felicia for help– or even gunter,” you shake your head, a hand resting against your forearm lightly. “i would feel guilty asking others to pick up my slack, though. this is what’s expected of me. whether it’s fair or not, i don’t want to let everyone down…”
more than you already have. but again, this goes unspoken. you mustn’t burden ike with your thoughts– he’s already doing so much by fighting for a cause you can’t speak of fully, beyond “ending the war between nohr and hoshido by seeking out the one who truly instigated it”. he could have been on his way after that friendly match, but he’d instead asked to travel with you… how could you possibly burden him further when he’s not even from here but getting involved in the continent’s affairs anyways? it feels… disrespectful. ungrateful. like a waste of his time.
you don’t want to waste his time.
“thank you. i appreciate it, truly. you’re very sweet to offer. i was unsure if i ought to approach about this sort of thing– you may be one of my soldiers, but you are also my guest. i was… afraid of appearing rude when you’re already doing more than i could ever ask just by lending me your strength. if you truly wish to do more, i will keep it in mind. … is there really nothing i can do for you in turn? anything to make your time here more comfortable?”
there is one thing you’d like to ask for some help with, actually, but you’re uncertain he’d be willing to help with something so… trivial in comparison to all your other duties.

      ⚔

Ike’s brows furrows as she replies.  Is this another noble thing??  Araceli is a princess, so naturally Ike would think there would be vassals and soldiers scrambling left and right to make sure she needn’t get her hands dirty...  but there weren’t.  He knows well enough now that princesses can fight, and they can be damn good at it too, but that doesn’t make up for all the other duties she shoulders on her own.

She means well, at the very least.  But she’s clearly naive, and Ike knows that if she keeps this up, she’ll end up even worse than she thinks.

❝ I’m not a guest,  he replies.  He levels her with a steely gaze -- but it’s typical for Ike.   I’m a mercenary.  I’ll sleep in whichever cot you give me, for however long it takes to wrap things up.

Image

❝ And you’re not supposed to be taking on every problem as you see it.

He shifts a bit.  He knows what its like to be so obsessed with the idea of being a good leader that you forget all the people ready and willing to help.  There’s a reason why people have advisers and staff officers and tacticians, and it isn’t because they’ve failed at doing it all themselves.  At this rate, it’s just a matter of time before Araceli crashes and burns and people either get hurt for it, or she gets even more torn up over no longer being able to continue like this.  Ike hasn’t just seen it before: he’s lived it.

❝ You can’t tell me every one expects you to work yourself to the grave.  If anything, we’re all counting on you to stay healthy and ready to give us orders.  You can tell people what to do to help and make everything work out, and if they expect you to do it yourself just because you’re leading them, they’re just lazy.

❝ It’s unfair to you, and everyone under you.  If you fall, everything else goes with you, and working yourself like this is an easy way to get there.

Even if his choice of words are blunt, and his tone of voice a little sharp, he speaks from a place of sincerity.  He watches her closely, gauging her reaction.

“I don’t feel safe anywhere.” (have this from Pelleas!)

      ⚔

Immediately, the thought comes at the forefront of Ike’s mind: I don’t blame you.  After every that happened in Tellius, and the awakening of not one but two gods, Ike can’t say he doesn’t at least feel the same.

( In large rooms, his eyes are always drawn to the doorways.  He keeps an eye on arms and hands, not faces or eyes, as much.  Tellius has seen so many wars in just three years, there’s no telling when some one might decide to start a new one, and from there it’s too likely that Ike’s blade will get drawn into the conflict in some way, somehow.  That he’s here, next to Pelleas at all, in some kind of stiff, fancy coronation party, is a miracle of its own.  He’d honestly rather be mucking stables in Crimea. )

image

❝ Me neither,  he says.  He doesn’t question it.  There’s no reason either of them should feel that way, being accomplished soldiers, and all the confounding problems seemingly gone now.  No more blood pacts, no more contracts, just two men ready to live a post-war lifestyle…  As different as that is, in this situation.

❝ …It’s why I keep my sword on me.

That’s half a suggestion.  No one would deny the Hero Ike his blade, when they can coo over it being as legendary as the man himself.  Pelleas is a mage – surely books would be easier to hide, if he needs it as a lifeline.

“You move as though held up by string. If you’re really so tired that you can barely keep your eyes open on the battlefield you need to get the summoner to swap you out so you can get some rest.”
He didn’t slow him down, at least. Of course he didn’t; despite being captain of the guard, Arvis was used to solo missions and to working largely by himself. Allies were always a ( strategically ) welcomed addition, but if they fell behind he could at least change tactics to hold his own. Valflame snapped shut with a quiet boom, the weight of both halves of the massive book coming together clapping almost like thunder. Under normal circumstances he would use it to emphasize his exasperation with someone, but in the moment he was just a bit tired himself. Despite having been nowhere near any of the enemy’s blades or lance heads, a motley helping of scratches and deeper cuts littered his right side. It was the work of Ardent Sacrifice, taken on from another team member who’d been keen on using themselves as a shield to cover any incoming enemies from the west.
Image
”… Actually, seeing if they couldn’t swap to a different team entirely for a while wouldn’t exactly be something to complain about. The summoner doesn’t seem to have the most tactic-minded strategy for a tactician… Do you think they’re even aware that our energy is expendable??

      ⚔

Soren’s chewed them out for it before, Ike answers.  The redhead’s tome is loud as it closes -- he can tell that if he weren’t facing Arvis, watching him close it himself, he might have jumped at the jarring sound it makes when it closes.  He’s never heard tomes as heavy as that before, Ike decides it speaks to Arvis’ training, or at least his strength, that he treats it as casually as just another tome.

The summoner’s carefree attitude ( or is it careless??  Ike wouldn’t push such a harsh label on them without any real proof ) certainly wears on them both.  Arvis is much more composed than Ike, but still the signs of a battle is easy enough for any soldier to see.  The mage is kind of impressive; more of an all-rounder than any one else Ike has met.  He heals, he weakens the enemy with so little as a glare, and he’s still brutally effective in a fight.  In comparison, Ike feels he needs to work harder, and in his current state, that just isn’t possible.  It feels like his fault, but Arvis seems to push it on the summoner easily.

❝ I’ve dealt with worse... Mostly.   He’s dealt with heavy eyelids and sluggish reflexes before, and even in cold mud and on a lethal deadline.  He takes a moment to weigh that against the celebratory outfit he’s been donning.  At least the outfit is easier to move in...  Isn’t it??

❝ It’s kind of nice to just be back to taking orders, instead of giving them out, but I won’t pretend I’m savvy enough to tell if they’re giving us the right ones.

He rolls his shoulder a bit.

❝ We should get going.  If we finish, they might give us an early break.
