All Is One, One Is All

@rizahawkebi / rizahawkebi.tumblr.com

Sideblog of @magewardensurana for Fullmetal Alchemist stuff. 30s. Is probably Too Old for this but I really don't care. This is a Roy, Risa and Royai appreciation blog, and Izumi Curtis and Olivier Mira Armstrong appreciation life. I mostly reblog mangahood canon, and very little 03 (and I'm also fairly 03 critical). And I don't like the dub. Posts by me can be found on the tag izumi.txt or 'shut up izumi'. - +

Summary: Mustang and Hawkeye are in their office when there is an explosion. Some hurt/comfort. Havoc being a good friend.

Warnings: Blood; Explosion

I experimented a bit with style in this using first-person POV. I know some people don't like it but it felt like the right choice for this one.

"She really is his babysitter, huh?"

[[Video description: It is a video of a Riza Hawkeye cosplayer interacting with a Roy that is, ostensibly offscreen.

Text from offscreen reads "Hawkeye, I need the -"

Riza hands him a piece of paper from a folder.

"Oh, and I didn't have a chance to -"

She hands him a second piece of paper, and reaches for the pen behind her ear.

"Marry me?"

She hands him the pen, and takes one of the papers back as he has apparently signed it and says, sarcastically, "I took care of that too. We've been married for the past seven years."

She smiles as he says "Excellent."

i think these are some of the most powerful and sickening panels depicting roy from the ishvalan war flashback.

the whole volume is stomach-turning, but specifically here, roy turns and notices an ishvalan man who is already laying on the ground in tears as he is dying, and decides to incinerate him. he could have turned away, he could have left the man to die. hell, he could have pulled out his service weapon and put a bullet through his head to make it quick. but he didn’t. he burned him to death, a man already likely to die, no longer a threat, unable to either fight back or flee. it’s dishonorable. it’s nauseating.

the way roy is framed from the ishvalans’ point of view, too, is utterly terrifying. his eyes are obscured in every panel, his only recognizable features being the amestrian uniform and his ignition gloves. he isn’t a person to them, he is a faceless bringer of death and destruction. and honestly, in this volume he is barely a person to the reader either. or to himself.

what a masterpiece of artistic framing in these panels. this is a really good example of where brotherhood completely failed to be faithful to the manga. the anime practically sanitizes the ishvalan genocide and roy’s hand in it. if you watch the anime only, you will know that roy killed people during the war; if you read the manga, you actually see firsthand multiple instances of him outright murdering helpless civilians. when i first read this volume i felt so sickened by the brutality on display that i had to physically put the book down several times. brotherhood does not do it justice at all. brotherhood sought to make roy (and riza) more palatable as protagonists. the manga refuses to let the reader get away with thinking they did not commit unforgivable atrocities. and it gives much stronger context to roy and riza’s unwavering intent to stand trial as war criminals after they tear down the military state.

and that is why the manga is just, better, frankly.

saw someone complaining that Roy and Riza aren't canon and I'm just sitting here like. what show did you watch where they weren't explicitly canonically in a romantic relationship. just because they didn't kiss with tongue onscreen doesn't mean they're not canon. this is where "sometimes a door is just blue" got us

the explicit, intended reading of their relationship is romantic. just because they don't say "I love you" doesn't mean they don't say "I love you"

what part of "trusting you to watch my back means trusting you to shoot me in it if I cross a line" wasn't romantic. what part of "if you cross this line I will kill you and then I will kill myself because I can't live without you" wasn't romantic. what part of "be my eyes" wasn't romantic. what show did you fucking watch. these war criminals were in love I rest my case

hiromu arakawa is a genius because she made a huge muscular angsty warrior priest with an intensely tragic past who uses alchemy to murder war criminals in revenge who's so badass he doesn't have a canon NAME and is just called SCAR and she looked at him and said "you know what he needs? fatherhood" and decided to make his canonical best friend a four foot tall princess who wears pink and braids her hair and has a baby panda and thinks her life is a YA paranormal drama series
