Rusty heard a soft female voice cut through her fitful sleep. She snorted and opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry at first as she blinked away the sleep. Her vision quickly focused on Kara kneeling above her on the bed.
“Kara?” Rusty asked as she stared at her healed daughter.
Her daughter was not only healed and awake, but she was clearly older. That, and she had a thick forehead cranial bone ridge.
“Have been next to me this whole time?” Kara asked as she sat back on her legs as her mother sat up to get a better look at her.
“Of course I have, Kitten,” Rusty answered, “You've been cocooned for 2 days. I wanted to be here for you when you woke up.”
Kara smiled. “Thank you, Mama...” She hugged Rusty tightly.
Rusty, in turn, hugged her. She noticed that her forearms also had layered bone plates, much like her forehead. She pulled back from the hug. “Wait, Kara. Stand up. I want to get a better look at you.”
Kara scooted off the bed and stood up. Rusty looked at her daughter closely. She was clearly in her teens, considering the size of her... chest. That, and along with the bone plates on her forehead and forearms, she also had them on her shins. “Wow, Kara... you've really improved yourself.”
“I didn't want to lose another fight...” Kara said as she looked herself over. She tapped her forehead. “No more being knocked out,” She showed her mother her finger knuckles, which each had a diamond shape bones plate as well, “Watch...” She flexed her fists and a four inch claw sprang from each knuckle. “My old claws weren't long enough.”
Rusty blinked. “I'm impressed, Kitten.”
“Thanks, Mama,” Kara sighed in relief. “Now you and Mom don't have to worry about me anymore.”
“Oh, I wouldn't say that, Kara,” Rusty said as she stood up and walked over to her dresser. She pulled out some clothing and tossed them at her daughter. “No matter how old you get, you'll always be my Kitten. That will never change.”
“Now get dressed and come out to the living room,” Rusty said as Kara pulled on her undergarments. “Oni has been beside herself with worry for the last two days. In fact, we all have.”
Kara pulled her two shirts over her head and nodded. “Okay, Mama.”
Rusty opened the door and exited the bedroom, and closed it behind her. The others were sitting in the living room. They all looked at her expectantly.
“Kara is awake,” Rusty said as she answered their unasked question. “However... she's changed. A lot.”
“Is she older?” AJ asked as she stood up.
“Much older,” Rusty responded. “She's at least 15 now. But, um...”
The bedroom door opened as Kara walked into the living room. The other's gasped at her appearance. The older Kitten smiled, barring her fangs.
“Uh... hi?” She awkwardly said.
“Oh, wow, Kitten.” AJ said as she and the others walked over to her. “You're all grown up.”
“Yeah...” She blushed. “I guess you could say that, Mom...”
Oni hugged her suddenly. Kara noticed that she was now the same height as her. “I'm so glad you're okay, Kara.” She gripped her tightly. “I was so worried about you, you know... thank you for saving me.”
Kara hugged her just as tightly. “I'm sorry for not listening to you, Oni.”
“Don't worry about it,” Oni sniffled as she pulled back a little to look her in the eye. “Heh. I like your plates. They seem really practical.”
“I was gonna say,” Vixen said. “I doubt anything could make it past them.”
“May I?” Silver asked as she reached her hands out.
Oni let her friend go as Kara acknowledged her Aunt's request. “Sure, Auntie Silver. Go ahead.”
Silver ran her hands over Kara's forehead, face and arms, ending at her hands. “You have the same muscle mass as your Mama Rusty... and yeah, Vixen was right. Your plates are really thick.” She lifted her paw up and dragged her thumb across her knuckles. “These are retractable.”
Kara giggled. “Uh, yeah. They are.”
“Are you hungry, Kara?” Vixen asked. “They last time you grew this much, you ate two big bowls of noodles.”
Kara looked at Vixen. “Uh, yeah. I kinda am.”
“Why don't we all go to Albany, then?” Rusty suggested. “They have a noodle bar. We could lunch there.” She looked at Kara. “That, and we have to return they clothing we bought for Kara, since, you know, you won't fit them anymore.”
“Good idea, Babe,” AJ agreed. “I'll go gather her old clothing.”
AJ and the others went to get ready. All except Oni.
“Are you sure you're okay, Kara?” Oni asked as she guided her to the couch.
Kara smiled as she sat next to her friend. “I'm still getting used to my body, but yeah, I'm okay. You don't have to worry about me, Oni. Me getting injured wasn't your fault. It was mine, if anything.”
Oni sighed deeply. “I have to take some of the blame,” She gestured to Kara's head. “If I had assessed the situation better, I wouldn't have been pinned by those two with the rifles.”
“Well... if I wasn't so eager to help you, to prove myself, if I had just listened to you...” Kara argued back, “I wouldn't have gotten injured at all, So really-”
“Would you just let me feel bad for getting you injured?” Oni growled as she cut Kara off. “It's my fault.”
“Why?” Kara asked simply. “Mama already said you've been worrying about me for the last 2 days. Why are you so insistent on taking all the blame?”
“Because!” Oni shouted out of frustration as she stood up and faced Kara. Kara winced at the shout. “I shouldn't have attacked the mutants. I should have tried to escape with you. I should have-”
Kara stood up and hugged her. “Shoulda, woulda, choulda...” She whispered. “Should have done this, would have done that, could have done things differently...” Oni hugged her back and buried her face against Kara's chest. “You're my friend, Oni. I don't blame you for what happened, and you shouldn't either. Please. Don't beat yourself about it. It happened. No amount of 'what ifs' will change that.”
Oni mumbled. “You're so smart now, Kara...”
“I had a good teacher,” Kara admitted.
Oni pulled back from the hug a bit and looked at Kara. “I thought a lot about you when you were injured, Kara. I mean, sure, we've only know each other for a week, but, um, I would have been lost if I lost you. You're my best and only friend...”
Kara noticed that Oni was blushing. She could feel that she was blushing too. “Oni...”
“Um, now would be a good time to kiss her, Kitten,” Rusty said with a chuckle.
Kara and Oni pulled away from each other as Kara looked at her moms and aunts standing in the bedroom doorway.
“Mama!” She said indignantly. “I wasn't... we're just friends!”
Oni blinked. “Just friends?”
Kara could swear steam was coming from her ears as she looked at Oni. “Well, best friends.”
AJ giggled. “Come on now, Kara. Be honest.”
“Mom!” Kara fumed. “I... I...”
Oni took Kara's right hand in her left hand and squeezed it. “I would be lying if I said I didn't find you attractive now that you're older, Kara...”
Kara snapped her gaze to Oni. “You do?”
“Well, you did call me pretty when you first saw me...” Oni reminded her. “Is it so bad that I think that you're pretty too, now?”
“Oni...” Kara half smiled as she blushed more and her heart beat faster. Oni moved quickly and planted her lips on Kara's. She held the kiss for three seconds, and then pulled back.
“I really like you, Kara. Like, like-like you,” Oni admitted.
“I, um, like-like you too...” Kara said as she smiled fully.
“Well, now that you 'like-like' one another...” Rusty said, “We can go get lunch.” She nudged AJ's arm with her elbow and walked to the front door, carrying a box. AJ, Silver and Vixen, all carrying boxes, followed her.
Kara looked at Oni as she 'pulled' her along. “So... are we girlfriends now?”
“I guess we are...” Oni agreed as they all headed outside.
Rusty and the others piled the boxed into the shopping cart. Rusty grabbed the cart handle and started pushing.
“You know...” AJ said as she walked next to Rusty. “Kara and Oni are datin'... Silver and Vix are married. Did you want to get married?”
Rusty looked at AJ as she stopped pushing the cart. “What?”
AJ took Rusty's hands in hers. “We love each-other... and we have a daughter together. Want to tie the knot, Rusty?”
Rusty's jaw dropped. “Uh, yes? Yes,” She cleared her throat. “I want to marry you. Be-be your wife.”
AJ smiled and bent down, kissing Rusty fully on the lips. She pulled back with an exaggerated 'mwah'. “It's a done deal.” She looked at Silver and Vixen. “I don't supposed there's someone in Albany that can marry us?”
Silver giggled. “Yeah. The Elder can.” She held up her left hand, showing her gold wedding band. “Do you guys have rings?”
“Ah, Dang it,” AJ smacked herself in the forehead. “Forgot that part.”
Vixen pulled two rings off her right hand, one off her index finger, and one off her pinkie. “Here, AJ. I bought these silver band rings off of De Writer a few years ago. You and Rusty can have them.”
AJ took the rings as Vixen tipped them into her hand. “Um, are yer sure, Vix?”
“Yeah, of course I'm sure,” Vixen nodded. “They should fit.”
AJ put the larger ring on her left ring finger, and then placed the smaller ring onto Rusty's left ring finger. “There you go, Babe.”
Rusty blushed and stared at her hand, “Wow.” She looked at Vixen. “Thanks, Vix.”
“Think nothing of it,” Vixen smiled as she gave Silver a side hug. “We're just happy that you guys can experience the love that me and Silver do.”
“Wow...” Kara said as she walked up and hugged both of her Moms. They formed a three way hug. After a brief moment, she pulled away, “Congratulations, Moms.”
“Thanks, Kitten,” Rusty smiled. “But, um, lets get going. We got to get you some food, after all.”
The group continued to Albany, arriving around noon. As they entered through the front gate, they made a left towards the noodle booth, that was ran by a Mister Handy, who called itself Mr. Noodles.
Mr. Noodles 'looked' at the crowd. “Ah, Ms. Rusty. So glad to finally meet you. Please. Sit, sit!” He waited for the group to sit on the stools. “Now, what can I get all six of you?”
“Just five, Mr. Noodles,” Oni corrected him. “I'm, er, a synth. I don't need to eat.”
“Ah, but of course, Young Ms,” Mr. Noodles said as his one eye swivelled back to the other. “Your orders?”
“We'll take four large bowls for us,” She said, gesturing to the adults, and 3 large bowls for my daughter.” She said as she gestured to Kara.”
“Seven bowls, coming right up!” Mr. Noodles declared as he got to work piling steaming noodles into 7 large bowls. He quickly served them soon after. “Enjoy!”
As they 5 girls ate their food, the Elder walked up to them. “So nice to see you again, girls.” She noticed Kara and Oni. “Oh, and who are these two beauties?”
Kara swallowed the noodles that she had in her mouth, and turned around. “Uh, Hello, Elder. You might find this hard to believe, but, um, I'm Kara.”
The Elder gasped as she placed a hand on her chest. “My goodness you've grown.”
Oni spun around in her seat, and faced the Elder. “And I'm Oni. I'm the one that was taking all the good junk in the Junk yard. Silver and Vixen invited me to live them.”
The Elder smiled. “Well, of course they did. I wouldn't expect anything less from them. It's a pleasure to meet you, Dear.”
Rusty finished chewing and spun around. So did AJ, Vixen and Silver. “Actually, Elder, if you're not too busy, AJ and I decided to get married. Well, officially. We would love it if you could perform the ceremony.”
The Elder smiled. “Of course I could marry you. It would be an honour. When would like me to do it?”
AJ and Rusty looked at one another, and nodded. They stood up at the same time.
“Um, now would be good,” Rusty admitted. “Nothing too fancy.”
“Yeah. We just need someone official to wed us, ya know?” AJ added.
The Elder smiled and nodded. “Fair enough. I that see you're already wearing rings, so, turn and face one another and hold hands.”
AJ and Rusty did as they were told.
“AJ, you want Rusty to be by your side for so long as you both shall live. Is this your wish?” The Elder asked.
AJ nodded. “It is my deepest wish.”
The Elder looked at Rusty. “Rusty, you asked AJ to be by your side for so long as you both shall live. Is that you wish?”
Rusty smiled as she teared up. “It is my deepest wish.”
“Then, by the power invested in me, as Town Elder, I now pronounce you married. You may kiss.” the Elder said.
AJ kissed Rusty deeply, as Vixen, Silver, Oni, and Kara clapped. She held it for a good 30 seconds and then pulled back and stroked her face. “To be continued later...” She whispered.
Rusty would have blushed crimson if her fur wasn't black.
The Elder giggled. “You know, we do have a lovely metal camper available for sale.” She suggested, as she gestured to the market area. “Not for free. I can part with it for 50 caps. I know you're planning on moving soon, but, well, it does have usable wheels, so you can take it with you.”
Rusty looked towards where the Elder was pointing. “Uh... we'll have to think about it. Thank you, Elder.”
“You know where to find me,” She winked and walked off.
AJ chuckled. “A small metal camper, huh?” She looked at Vixen. “Could we even pull that with the car?”
Vixen shrugged. “Wouldn't hurt to take a look. It would help us spread the load a bit. You know, with all the things we need to bring with us.”
“Let's go see it,” Silver suggested. “Uh... after lunch, that is.”
“Right.” Rusty giggled as they sat down and returned to their lunch.
