Hi, @furis lupus :

Sorry that this is late in coming. The cold weather has really messed up my computer. Today was the first time since the cold snap started that I could get the machine to boot.

Now, about Clan – M'cratt genetics and its influence on their society. First, as you already know, both are technically the same species. They have a three strand DNA spiral that carries the genetic information.

We have a two strand DNA which, by and large, results in our overall binary male / female structure. Most creatures have both, though the physical differences may be extreme, as in angler fish.

Their triple DNA has a similar result. The experience of our biome shows that for complex animals either Oviparous or Viviporus strategies work best. I have adopted the viviparous model for the Clan and M'cratt. This could have resulted in sexually trimorphic species. I have adopted a slightly different system.

They have essentially only one sex, capable of either gestating a fetus or contributing a DNA strand to the egg. Which they do depends, in nature, on pheromonal / hormonal triggers between the members of a Triad. These triggers can be induced by either activity between the members or, later in scientific development, by completely artificial means.

Among the Clans, they nearly always allow nature to take its course. Among the M'cratt, artificial means are common, though not universal. Thus, among the Clans, families and close relationships are the norm. Among the M'cratt, such close relationships are frowned upon as leading to weakness.

I hope that this clarifies the overall background of the Lezon / D'ancer saga.

I do have more in the works for our little, but growing!, Warrior Clan.

This is great and very informative. I can't wait to see and read any more stories that come out.

An adventuring party is in a cage suspended over acid the wizard clears his throat "I just sent a message to my wife she should be here to save us soon." "Wait your married?" Said the rouge "more importantly what is she gonna." The paladin is interrupted by a massive explosion.

"Hang on, hang on, hang on. You're married to a dragon?"

"Half-dragons come from somewhere, you know!" Vrilthacar sounds defensive.

"And you've never told us?"

"Well, it's very important for married people to cultivate different hobbies, you know! You can't go and make someone else's interests your whole life, it isn't healthy. So she has her collection, and I have my adventuring and my dabbling in things man was not meant to know. Our friendship groups don't actually cross over too much, and that's fine."

"But—but pillaging gold from the countryside is something we're supposed to stop—"

"Well, first of all, dragons help fight inflation, especially inflation that would otherwise be caused by adventurers, and second of all, not all dragons collect treasure. That's a stereotype. Honeybee collects dolls. Which admittedly has gotten us into more troublesome situations than gold might, but so long as we provide the haunted ones with suitable enrichment it's usually all right."

"Honeybee."

"Her full name is two minutes long, Tasler. Listen, I'm going to need you to stop doing microaggressions before she rips the roof off the Elder Lich's citadel, all right? Because she has been known to respond with macroaggressions."

Tasler gulps and falls quiet as half the ceiling falls into the acid. "Sugar-pumpkin, are you all right?"

"Completely unhurt!" Vrilthacar calls out cheerfully.

The paladin mouths, sugar-pumpkin??? but very carefully doesn't say it.

This is the kind of relationship goal i want

Yes I am a lot. It is always great to see and read more stories from you. Rps, especially with people like @ask-de-writer and @mordenheim, are just pudding on top. I have always been interested in rping, but I am scared of it too. I have never done one, and I am a little bit intimidated by it.

Is everything okay? Just a little worried that I haven't seen a post from you for a bit

Chapter 14

“Mama?”

Rusty heard a soft female voice cut through her fitful sleep. She snorted and opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry at first as she blinked away the sleep. Her vision quickly focused on Kara kneeling above her on the bed.

“Kara?” Rusty asked as she stared at her healed daughter.

Her daughter was not only healed and awake, but she was clearly older. That, and she had a thick forehead cranial bone ridge.

“Have been next to me this whole time?” Kara asked as she sat back on her legs as her mother sat up to get a better look at her.

“Of course I have, Kitten,” Rusty answered, “You've been cocooned for 2 days. I wanted to be here for you when you woke up.”

Kara smiled. “Thank you, Mama...” She hugged Rusty tightly.

Rusty, in turn, hugged her. She noticed that her forearms also had layered bone plates, much like her forehead. She pulled back from the hug. “Wait, Kara. Stand up. I want to get a better look at you.”

Kara scooted off the bed and stood up. Rusty looked at her daughter closely. She was clearly in her teens, considering the size of her... chest. That, and along with the bone plates on her forehead and forearms, she also had them on her shins. “Wow, Kara... you've really improved yourself.”

“I didn't want to lose another fight...” Kara said as she looked herself over. She tapped her forehead. “No more being knocked out,” She showed her mother her finger knuckles, which each had a diamond shape bones plate as well, “Watch...” She flexed her fists and a four inch claw sprang from each knuckle. “My old claws weren't long enough.”

Rusty blinked. “I'm impressed, Kitten.”

“Thanks, Mama,” Kara sighed in relief. “Now you and Mom don't have to worry about me anymore.”

“Oh, I wouldn't say that, Kara,” Rusty said as she stood up and walked over to her dresser. She pulled out some clothing and tossed them at her daughter. “No matter how old you get, you'll always be my Kitten. That will never change.”

“Now get dressed and come out to the living room,” Rusty said as Kara pulled on her undergarments. “Oni has been beside herself with worry for the last two days. In fact, we all have.”

Kara pulled her two shirts over her head and nodded. “Okay, Mama.”

Rusty opened the door and exited the bedroom, and closed it behind her. The others were sitting in the living room. They all looked at her expectantly.

“Kara is awake,” Rusty said as she answered their unasked question. “However... she's changed. A lot.”

“Is she older?” AJ asked as she stood up.

“Much older,” Rusty responded. “She's at least 15 now. But, um...”

The bedroom door opened as Kara walked into the living room. The other's gasped at her appearance. The older Kitten smiled, barring her fangs.

“Uh... hi?” She awkwardly said.

“Oh, wow, Kitten.” AJ said as she and the others walked over to her. “You're all grown up.”

“Yeah...” She blushed. “I guess you could say that, Mom...”

Oni hugged her suddenly. Kara noticed that she was now the same height as her. “I'm so glad you're okay, Kara.” She gripped her tightly. “I was so worried about you, you know... thank you for saving me.”

Kara hugged her just as tightly. “I'm sorry for not listening to you, Oni.”

“Don't worry about it,” Oni sniffled as she pulled back a little to look her in the eye. “Heh. I like your plates. They seem really practical.”

“I was gonna say,” Vixen said. “I doubt anything could make it past them.”

“May I?” Silver asked as she reached her hands out.

Oni let her friend go as Kara acknowledged her Aunt's request. “Sure, Auntie Silver. Go ahead.”

Silver ran her hands over Kara's forehead, face and arms, ending at her hands. “You have the same muscle mass as your Mama Rusty... and yeah, Vixen was right. Your plates are really thick.” She lifted her paw up and dragged her thumb across her knuckles. “These are retractable.”

Kara giggled. “Uh, yeah. They are.”

“Are you hungry, Kara?” Vixen asked. “They last time you grew this much, you ate two big bowls of noodles.”

Kara looked at Vixen. “Uh, yeah. I kinda am.”

“Why don't we all go to Albany, then?” Rusty suggested. “They have a noodle bar. We could lunch there.” She looked at Kara. “That, and we have to return they clothing we bought for Kara, since, you know, you won't fit them anymore.”

“Good idea, Babe,” AJ agreed. “I'll go gather her old clothing.”

AJ and the others went to get ready. All except Oni.

“Are you sure you're okay, Kara?” Oni asked as she guided her to the couch.

Kara smiled as she sat next to her friend. “I'm still getting used to my body, but yeah, I'm okay. You don't have to worry about me, Oni. Me getting injured wasn't your fault. It was mine, if anything.”

Oni sighed deeply. “I have to take some of the blame,” She gestured to Kara's head. “If I had assessed the situation better, I wouldn't have been pinned by those two with the rifles.”

“Well... if I wasn't so eager to help you, to prove myself, if I had just listened to you...” Kara argued back, “I wouldn't have gotten injured at all, So really-”

“Would you just let me feel bad for getting you injured?” Oni growled as she cut Kara off. “It's my fault.”

“Why?” Kara asked simply. “Mama already said you've been worrying about me for the last 2 days. Why are you so insistent on taking all the blame?”

“Because!” Oni shouted out of frustration as she stood up and faced Kara. Kara winced at the shout. “I shouldn't have attacked the mutants. I should have tried to escape with you. I should have-”

Kara stood up and hugged her. “Shoulda, woulda, choulda...” She whispered. “Should have done this, would have done that, could have done things differently...” Oni hugged her back and buried her face against Kara's chest. “You're my friend, Oni. I don't blame you for what happened, and you shouldn't either. Please. Don't beat yourself about it. It happened. No amount of 'what ifs' will change that.”

Oni mumbled. “You're so smart now, Kara...”

“I had a good teacher,” Kara admitted.

Oni pulled back from the hug a bit and looked at Kara. “I thought a lot about you when you were injured, Kara. I mean, sure, we've only know each other for a week, but, um, I would have been lost if I lost you. You're my best and only friend...”

Kara noticed that Oni was blushing. She could feel that she was blushing too. “Oni...”

“Um, now would be a good time to kiss her, Kitten,” Rusty said with a chuckle.

Kara and Oni pulled away from each other as Kara looked at her moms and aunts standing in the bedroom doorway.

“Mama!” She said indignantly. “I wasn't... we're just friends!”

Oni blinked. “Just friends?”

Kara could swear steam was coming from her ears as she looked at Oni. “Well, best friends.”

AJ giggled. “Come on now, Kara. Be honest.”

“Mom!” Kara fumed. “I... I...”

Oni took Kara's right hand in her left hand and squeezed it. “I would be lying if I said I didn't find you attractive now that you're older, Kara...”

Kara snapped her gaze to Oni. “You do?”

“Well, you did call me pretty when you first saw me...” Oni reminded her. “Is it so bad that I think that you're pretty too, now?”

“Oni...” Kara half smiled as she blushed more and her heart beat faster. Oni moved quickly and planted her lips on Kara's. She held the kiss for three seconds, and then pulled back.

“I really like you, Kara. Like, like-like you,” Oni admitted.

“I, um, like-like you too...” Kara said as she smiled fully.

“Well, now that you 'like-like' one another...” Rusty said, “We can go get lunch.” She nudged AJ's arm with her elbow and walked to the front door, carrying a box. AJ, Silver and Vixen, all carrying boxes, followed her.

Kara looked at Oni as she 'pulled' her along. “So... are we girlfriends now?”

“I guess we are...” Oni agreed as they all headed outside.

Rusty and the others piled the boxed into the shopping cart. Rusty grabbed the cart handle and started pushing.

“You know...” AJ said as she walked next to Rusty. “Kara and Oni are datin'... Silver and Vix are married. Did you want to get married?”

Rusty looked at AJ as she stopped pushing the cart. “What?”

AJ took Rusty's hands in hers. “We love each-other... and we have a daughter together. Want to tie the knot, Rusty?”

Rusty's jaw dropped. “Uh, yes? Yes,” She cleared her throat. “I want to marry you. Be-be your wife.”

AJ smiled and bent down, kissing Rusty fully on the lips. She pulled back with an exaggerated 'mwah'. “It's a done deal.” She looked at Silver and Vixen. “I don't supposed there's someone in Albany that can marry us?”

Silver giggled. “Yeah. The Elder can.” She held up her left hand, showing her gold wedding band. “Do you guys have rings?”

“Ah, Dang it,” AJ smacked herself in the forehead. “Forgot that part.”

Vixen pulled two rings off her right hand, one off her index finger, and one off her pinkie. “Here, AJ. I bought these silver band rings off of De Writer a few years ago. You and Rusty can have them.”

AJ took the rings as Vixen tipped them into her hand. “Um, are yer sure, Vix?”

“Yeah, of course I'm sure,” Vixen nodded. “They should fit.”

AJ put the larger ring on her left ring finger, and then placed the smaller ring onto Rusty's left ring finger. “There you go, Babe.”

Rusty blushed and stared at her hand, “Wow.” She looked at Vixen. “Thanks, Vix.”

“Think nothing of it,” Vixen smiled as she gave Silver a side hug. “We're just happy that you guys can experience the love that me and Silver do.”

“Wow...” Kara said as she walked up and hugged both of her Moms. They formed a three way hug. After a brief moment, she pulled away, “Congratulations, Moms.”

“Thanks, Kitten,” Rusty smiled. “But, um, lets get going. We got to get you some food, after all.”

The group continued to Albany, arriving around noon. As they entered through the front gate, they made a left towards the noodle booth, that was ran by a Mister Handy, who called itself Mr. Noodles.

Mr. Noodles 'looked' at the crowd. “Ah, Ms. Rusty. So glad to finally meet you. Please. Sit, sit!” He waited for the group to sit on the stools. “Now, what can I get all six of you?”

“Just five, Mr. Noodles,” Oni corrected him. “I'm, er, a synth. I don't need to eat.”

“Ah, but of course, Young Ms,” Mr. Noodles said as his one eye swivelled back to the other. “Your orders?”

“We'll take four large bowls for us,” She said, gesturing to the adults, and 3 large bowls for my daughter.” She said as she gestured to Kara.”

“Seven bowls, coming right up!” Mr. Noodles declared as he got to work piling steaming noodles into 7 large bowls. He quickly served them soon after. “Enjoy!”

As they 5 girls ate their food, the Elder walked up to them. “So nice to see you again, girls.” She noticed Kara and Oni. “Oh, and who are these two beauties?”

Kara swallowed the noodles that she had in her mouth, and turned around. “Uh, Hello, Elder. You might find this hard to believe, but, um, I'm Kara.”

The Elder gasped as she placed a hand on her chest. “My goodness you've grown.”

Oni spun around in her seat, and faced the Elder. “And I'm Oni. I'm the one that was taking all the good junk in the Junk yard. Silver and Vixen invited me to live them.”

The Elder smiled. “Well, of course they did. I wouldn't expect anything less from them. It's a pleasure to meet you, Dear.”

Rusty finished chewing and spun around. So did AJ, Vixen and Silver. “Actually, Elder, if you're not too busy, AJ and I decided to get married. Well, officially. We would love it if you could perform the ceremony.”

The Elder smiled. “Of course I could marry you. It would be an honour. When would like me to do it?”

AJ and Rusty looked at one another, and nodded. They stood up at the same time.

“Um, now would be good,” Rusty admitted. “Nothing too fancy.”

“Yeah. We just need someone official to wed us, ya know?” AJ added.

The Elder smiled and nodded. “Fair enough. I that see you're already wearing rings, so, turn and face one another and hold hands.”

AJ and Rusty did as they were told.

“AJ, you want Rusty to be by your side for so long as you both shall live. Is this your wish?” The Elder asked.

AJ nodded. “It is my deepest wish.”

The Elder looked at Rusty. “Rusty, you asked AJ to be by your side for so long as you both shall live. Is that you wish?”

Rusty smiled as she teared up. “It is my deepest wish.”

“Then, by the power invested in me, as Town Elder, I now pronounce you married. You may kiss.” the Elder said.

AJ kissed Rusty deeply, as Vixen, Silver, Oni, and Kara clapped. She held it for a good 30 seconds and then pulled back and stroked her face. “To be continued later...” She whispered.

Rusty would have blushed crimson if her fur wasn't black.

The Elder giggled. “You know, we do have a lovely metal camper available for sale.” She suggested, as she gestured to the market area. “Not for free. I can part with it for 50 caps. I know you're planning on moving soon, but, well, it does have usable wheels, so you can take it with you.”

Rusty looked towards where the Elder was pointing. “Uh... we'll have to think about it. Thank you, Elder.”

“You know where to find me,” She winked and walked off.

AJ chuckled. “A small metal camper, huh?” She looked at Vixen. “Could we even pull that with the car?”

Vixen shrugged. “Wouldn't hurt to take a look. It would help us spread the load a bit. You know, with all the things we need to bring with us.”

“Let's go see it,” Silver suggested. “Uh... after lunch, that is.”

“Right.” Rusty giggled as they sat down and returned to their lunch.

Whoo hoo love is in the air. I'm willing to bet that Rusty and AJ put that trailer to good use later that night. It is so nice to see Kara healed, and with awesome upgrades. Not going to lie, but the description made me think Klingon before I saw the picture.

Chapter 13

Rusty, AJ, Silver, and Vixen, pushing her “shopping cart” walked into Albany, in hopes to find a distiller, or at least the parts for one. They were also hoping to find some clothing for Oni and Kara, and getting some food for the seemingly bottomless pit that the young kitten had for a stomach. It had been several days since she, for want of a better word, forced herself to grow older, and she was eatting every 2 hours or so.

As the group entered Albany, the were greeted by cheers from the denizens. Human, super mutant, and ghoul alike applauded as the saw Rusty. The Elder walked up to the girls with a warm smile.

“Ah, Rusty,” She said happily. “So good to see you again. Likewise for you AJ. And of course, Silver and Vixen.”

Rusty blushed. “Uh, thanks Elder. A pleasure to see you again, too.” She looked to the centre of the town, and saw people pouring water out of the water filter. “I see that you have running water again.”

“All thanks to you, Dear.” The Elder nodded. “No sooner had you come back to town, I sent our engineers to fix our water pipe and pump.” She sighed happily. “So, what brings you girls to town?”

Vixen cleared her throat. “We need a distiller. Or, at least the parts to make one.”

“A distiller?” The Elder repeated. “Whatever for?”

“We're hoping to make a... bio-fuel. Like an experiment,” AJ answered.

“Well, I think we have parts for that,” The Elder thought for a moment. She pointed to the market. “We have chemistry stations you can buy. All for a discount, of course. Rusty did save our water. How does unlimited credit sound?”

“Unlimited?” The girls said all at once in shock and awe.

“Why unlimited?” Rusty asked. “I mean that's very generous... but that's a lot.”

“Nonsense,” The Elder said with a dismissive hand wave. “Not only did you save our water, you also saved our town from the Raiders. That, and you did it for no reward. This is the least we can do.”

Rusty looked at the others. “Uh, okay. I guess we accept. Thank you, Elder.”

The four girls walked over to the market to do their shopping.

Meanwhile, Oni and Kara were back at the Vixen's and Silver's home. Oni was teaching the Kitten how to read and write, and answering her endless questions.

After and hour of answering questions, and trying to teach her to read, Oni rolled her eyes and sighed, “Kara, I know you have a lot of questions, but even I have my limits.”

Kara frowned. “Sorry, Oni. I just want to know all about this world. All about you.”

Oni bit her lower lip. Perhaps she was being too hard on the young girl. “Okay. Just limit your questions to me, then, back to reading, okay?”

Kara nodded, “Okay.”

Oni took a deep breath, even though she didn't really need to.

“Um, how many Generations of Synths are there?” Kara asked.

“There are three. Gen 1 are basically walking, metal, skeletons. Gen 2 have artificial skin layer that makes the Gen 2 similar to a human. Though more humanoid in appearance, Gen 2s still possess limited A.I. and superficially resemble a mannequin more than humans,” She paused for a second. “Gen 3 are physically and mentally indistinguishable from ordinary humans, having lab-grown bodies of real human flesh, bones, and organs instead of plastic and metal.”

Kara nodded in understanding. “I understand. But, um, Mama said you're different from the other Gens.”

“I am,” Oni said. “I wouldn't really call myself the Next Gen. My creators certainly did. See, I was made to look human, just like the Gen 3, but, instead of organic material, they used carbon fibre. Making me more like a Gen 2, only faster, tougher, and stronger,” She shrugged. “I guess I'm more like a Gen 3.5.”

“I guess that...” Kara began to say, stopped talking as her ears twitched. “Do you hear something outside?”

Oni increased her auditory sensors. “Yeah. I hear... uh-oh...” She looked at Kara. “I hear 3 super mutants outside.”

Kara gasped. “What can we do?”

Oni looked around. Rusty and AJ brought their respected rifles with them. There was Vixen's stun stick, but that wouldn't work on the mutants. The only she has was her baseball bat. She walked over to it quickly, and then walked over to Vixen's bench. She took the barbwire of it, and grabbed two 8 inch saw blades, She then wrapped the barbwire back onto her bat, along with the saw blades on the sides near the tip.

“I'll try to take care of them,” Oni said. “You make your way out the back window and run South to town. Get your Mama's. Okay?”

Kara whimpered, but nodded, “Okay.”

Oni walked to the door, and looked back at Kara. “Stay out of sight.” She opened the door quickly, and dashed outside, closing it behind her.

Kara waited as she heard the sounds of fighting, and guns firing. She looked at her hands. Her claws were sharp, and she didn't want to leave Oni alone. Not her only friend.

Ignoring Oni's plan, the Kitten walked to the door. She opened it and peaked outside. One Super-mutant was already dead, his head was smashed in. She looked for Oni, and saw that she was pinned behind a rock, as the other two mutants took pot shots at her with hunting rifles. She crept outside and picked up the bladed board the the dead mutant was carrying.

“Okay, Kara...” She said to herself. “Time to help your friend.”

She gripped the board in her hands and quietly ran towards the mutants. As she got close to them, she let out a roar cry, and jumped. She swung the board down, and sunk the blades into one of the mutant's skull, causing it to stick. He fell to the ground with Kara still on his back.

The second mutant growled at turned his attention to Kara. He opened fire at her. She got on all fours as she dodged his shots. After four shots, he ran out of ammo. Seeing her opening, Kara unsheathed her claws and jumped at him, aiming for his face.

“Kara! Don't!” Oni shouted as she stood up.

Kara's weight caused the mutant to fall on his back. She started slashing his face with her claws, hissing as she did. However, the mutant grabbed her neck, and tossed her aside. The kitten went flying and slammed into the rock that Oni was hiding behind, knocking her out cold.

“HA!” The mutant screamed triumphantly. “Got you!” He stood up and stomped over to Kara.

“No!” Oni shouted again. She jumped onto the rock and swung her bat at the Mutant's head. The blades sunk into his face knocking him onto his back again.

“Gah!” The mutant shouted as he held his face in pain.

Oni walked slowly up to him and raised her bat above her head with both her hands. She slammed it down on his chest, caving his rib cage in. He stopped moving instantly.

The synth dropped her bat and ran over to the motionless Kitten. She dropped to her knees and rolled Kara onto her back.

“Kara?” She asked cautiously.

Kara didn't answer.

Oni scanned her and noticed that her right temple was oozing blood. She pulled off her scarf and wrapped it around Kara's head, hoping to stem the bleeding. She then picked her up bridal style and carried her back to the house.

4 hours later, the four adults approached the house, and saw the dead mutants scattered around the “front” yard.

“Kara. Oni.” Rusty gasped. “They were attacked!”

AJ, Rusty, Vixen, and Silver ran into the house.

“Kara! Oni?!” Rusty called out in panic.

Vixen noticed that the first aid kit had been torn off the wall and AJ's and Rusty's door was ajar. She pointed. “There!”

They rushed into the bedroom and saw Oni sitting next to Kara. Kara's head was wrapped in gauze, which was soaked through with blood. Oni's scarf was also soaked with blood and was laying on the floor.

Oni's eyes were soaked as she looked at Rusty. “I'm so sorry, Rusty...” She sniffled. “The mutants... they were looking around the house. I... I... told Kara to sneak out the back. Told her to go get you. She...” She looked at her injured friend. “She attacked them. Killed one with a bladed board, and then used her claws on the other...” She sniffled. “He threw her against a rock, knocking her out...”

Rusty, with her eyes wet from tears, knelt on the bed next to Kara. She placed a hand on her chest and shook her gently “Kitten?”

Kara's eyes moved behind her eyelids, but she didn't say anything. Rusty looked at AJ.

AJ was crying too. “Silver?”

Silver walked over to the bed and placed her hand on Kara's chest. “Her breathing is shallow, but she is breathing. Her heart rate is okay.”

Rusty stroked her hair. “I have a healing factor... she should have the same ability, right?”

“Maybe her body is stressed due to aging,” Silver said. “Or maybe it isn't as strong as yours. Sorry, Rusty, but I'm not a doctor.”

Rusty looked AJ. “What... what should we do?”

“Let's just... let her sleep for now. It's all we can do,” AJ suggested. “I mean, we can go back to Albany for a Doctor, but... who knows if they can even help?

Rusty sighed. “I'll stay with her. Keep an eye on her.”

Oni looked at Rusty. “If it's okay, I'll stay with her. Please, Rusty. She got injured because of me. I want to stay with her.”

AJ placed a hand on Rusty's shoulder. “She'll be okay with Oni, Rusty.”

Rusty nodded. “Okay, Oni. You can stay with her. Let us know immediately if anything changes.”

“I will, Rusty,” Oni said. “You can count on me.”

The adults left the room, and Rusty closed the door.

“Now, uh, what are we gonna do about those mutants?” AJ asked. “They're already stinking up the place.”

“I have a couple shovels,” Vixen said. “What say we dig a pit and bury them.”

Silver nodded in agreement. “I'll stay in here, just in case Oni needs some help.”

“Sounds good,” Rusty said.

Rusty, AJ, Vixen went outside and grabbed the three spade shovels off the porch of the house. They walked a good distance from the house, and started digging. They kept digging until they had an eight foot deep hole that was 10 foot square. Next they dragged the three dead mutants to it, and unceremoniously dumped them in. They then filled the hole in. Once they were done, they walked back to the house.

“Want to set up the chem station, Vix?” AJ asked Vixen. “See if it works?”

“Yeah. We can do that.”

Together, AJ and Vixen lifted the chem-station out of the cart and set it on the ground.

(Picture compliments of Fallout Wiki)

Vixen looked at Rusty. “Want to... want to bring the food and clothing in?”

Rusty blinked and nodded. “Uh, Sure.” She picked up the boxes of food, and clothing and carried them into the house.

“Hey, Rusty,” Silver greeted them. “I, um, made some coffee. Why don't you sit down and have some while l put the food away.”

Rusty smiled and set the boxes down. She separated the food boxes from the clothing boxes, and then carried them over to Silver. “I hope this is enough for... um...”

“We got a weeks worth of food,” Silver smiled as she started to put the food away. “That's even with Kara's increased diet. We'll be fine.”

Rusty turned suddenly as the door to the bedroom suddenly opened. Oni was standing in the open door. “Rusty? Uh... Kara has, um, cocooned herself again.”

Rusty ran to the bedroom and entered it. Sure enough, Kara had cocooned herself again. “Well, she's either healing herself, or aging herself again.”

“Should I keep watching her?” Oni asked.

“I'll stay with you,” Rusty answered. “We'll both keep an eye with her.”

Oh no poor Kara. Hopefully it is just a healing trance and their healing factor will be upgraded. That weeks worth of food is probably going to disappear very quickly.

Chapter 12

As Rusty and Vixen left for the junk yard, AJ and Silver went over the formula of the bio fuel. Luckily, in their exploring and salvaging, the married couple had plenty of pencils and surprisingly, a pencil sharpener.

AJ filled in the blanks to the smudged formula. “Where did ya even find these pages?” She asked as she kept writing.

“You know that old Military base Vixen mentioned?” Silver asked in return. “She found a bio-science lab.”

AJ hummed in thought. “Well, we're gonna need a distiller.” She said as she flipped through the pages. “And keep in mind, I'm going off what I remember. Should be good enough, but might not be as efficient as we want it to be.” She looked at Silver. “Like, miles per gallon as this suggests. It says 50-55. Ours might be 30-35 at best.”

Silver nodded in understanding. “Well, a distiller should be easy enough to get. We can get one from Albany.” She thought for a second. “As for the efficiency issue? We do have half an acre of maize... we might have to use all of it.”

“I don't think we will,” AJ said as she read the notes. “This formula makes about 50 gallons. Using about 3 ears gallon...”

“Well, our plants yield 4 ears per plant.” Silver said. “So, we'll only need about 14 plants.”

“Ronto is about 410 miles from here. De Writer showed me an old world map of his.” AJ said as she flipped the paper and started writing numbers. “That bein' said, with 4 adults, weight for the fuel barrels... food, equipment...” She hummed. “Yeah. We're gonna need, at minimum, 6 barrels.”

“That's going to weigh a lot...” Silver sighed.

“Yeah. Unless we can find a way to make this process more efficient, we're gonna have a lot of weight.” AJ said as she sighed deeply. She set the papers and her pencil down and stood up. She yawned and stretched.

She looked the wall clock. They had been working for an hour. She looked at her bedroom door. “I'm gonna check on Kara.”

Silver nodded. “Sure thing.”

AJ walked over to the door, and opened it. She gasped.

“Silver!” AJ shouted as she ran to the bed. Kara wasn't on the bed. Instead, a hard shell... chrysalis pod was where she had been laying.

Silver came running into the room at AJ's shout. “What? What is it AJ?”

AJ knelt on the bed next to the pod. “Kara... she's... she's a...” She gently touched the pod. “She's cocooned in a...”

Silver walked over to the bed and knelt beside AJ. She gently touched the pod with both her hands. She titled her head and listen closely.

“She's growing.” She explained to AJ. “A forced growth.” She looked at the worried AJ. “Remember those brown flecks you washed off her during her bath?”

AJ blinked. “Uh, yeah...”

“You and Rusty explained that the Institute fixed Rusty after being attacked by the Death claw.” Silver said. “How did they fix her?”

“They used a modified version of the FEV.” AJ answered honestly. “The Forced Evolutionary Virus. A version that wouldn't turn her into a Super Mutant.” She shook her head. “The night that Rusty and I found Kara... the central AI of the Institute told us that Kara was also exposed to a further modified version of the FEV...”

“Right. Evolution.” Silver surmised. “My guess? She's making herself grow older.”

“She is?” AJ asked. “I wonder why?”

“Well,” Silver said, “She's what? Three months old? Maybe she felt like a burden? Or, she wants to help us as much as she can.”

AJ looked at the cocoon. “I wonder...”

The shell cracked open and two furry paws gripped the edge of it, and pushed it open. A much older Kara, with the appearance of a four year old, and covered in... slime pulled herself and looked at AJ.

“M-mommy?” Kara's glowing green eyes settled on AJ as she smiled widely.

“K-kara?” AJ gasped and pulled her daughter into a hug. Kara giggled and hugged mother tightly.

“Imma big girl now.” Kara said.

Rusty, Vixen, and Oni looked at Kara.

Rusty blinked and looked at her older daughter. She knelt down in front of her. “Wow... Kara. You are a big girl now.”

“Is Mama happy to see me?” Kara asked as she tilted her head cutely.

Rusty nodded. “Yes, Kitten. I am.” She held out her arms. “Come give Mama a hug.”

Kara ran over to her and hugged Rusty around her neck. Rusty braced Kara on her back and bottom and lifted her up. “Whoa... you're so much heavier too.”

Kara pulled back and looked at AJ. “Mommy said I have thick bones.” She pointed at Silver. “Auntie Silver said I'm 4 years old and healthy as a brahmin.” She looked at Rusty. “Does Mama like my clothing?”

Rusty nodded. “Oh, yes. Very pretty.” She looked at AJ and Silver. “So, uh... she just changed by herself? And can talk?”

Silver looked at her niece. “I don't know how it happened. Kara said she wanted to help. Right Kara?”

“Uh-huh!” Kara giggled excitedly. “I wanted to walk and talk.” She looked at Vixen. “Hi, Auntie Vix!”

“Hey, Kiddo,” Vixen waved. “Gotta admit... I didn't expect for you to grow so big in a few hours.”

Kara looked at Oni. “Hi Pretty girl. Who are you?”

Oni blushed on her undamaged cheek. “Oh, um, well, my name is Oni.” She looked at AJ and Silver. “I'm the one that was living in the junk yard.”

AJ's eyes went wide. “Wait a sec... you're Alpha!”

Oni's went wide as well as she pointed to AJ in recognition.“Tech Amanda!”

“Uh, yeah. Just AJ now.” She shook her head. “And, uh... I'm one of the good ones. You don't have to feel unsafe around me.”

Oni blinked rapidly. “Yeah. You were in Advanced systems. You helped design me. No hard feelings.”

“Oni, is it?” Silver said. “I'm Silver. May you come over here? I need to, well, use my hands to see you.”

Oni walked over to Silver. “Okay. Go ahead.”

Silver gently touched the young Synth's faced and smiled. “How old are you, Oni?”

“Technically, I'm 7 months.” She answered.

“Wait... Oni is younger then me?” Kara asked cutely. “She looks older.”

“I would say she's 16 years in appearance.” Silver said simply. “What do you think, Oni?”

Oni shrugged. “Sure. I think that's accurate.”

Silver looked at Vixen. “I take it that Vixen invited you to live with us?”

“Well, it beats living in a junk yard.” Vixen admitted. “Also, I don't think she'll eat much.”

“Not really, no.” Oni shook her head as she looked at Vixen. “I don't eat all. I'm actually powered by a single fusion cell,” She tapped her chest. “I don't have to recharge like the earlier synths. Or sleep.”

Silver giggled. “I don't have a problem with you living with us, Oni. I always wanted a younger sister.”

Oni snapped her head around and looked at Silver. “What?”

“What?” Vixen repeated.

“Oh!” Kara said suddenly . “Is she gonna be my aunt too?”

“I wouldn't say that, Kara.” Silver answered as she looked at Oni again. “But since you're too old, well, in appearance anyway, to be a daughter to me and Vixen, I thought a kid sister would be okay.”

“Too old...” Oni repeated as she look ed around the room. “How old is everyone?”

“Well, I'm 21.” Rusty answered.

“Mommy says I'm 4.” Kara said.

“Uh... I'm 25.” AJ said.

“I'm 27.” Vixen admitted.

“And I'm 28.” Silver answered. “So, as you can see, having a 16 year old daughter wouldn't make sense.” She explained. “You know, as a cover story.”

“Oh. Yeah.” Oni thought about it. “I guess that would make sense.”

“So, uh, is Oni... gonna be related to me?” Kara asked, rephrasing her question.

Oni looked at Kara. “If it's okay with you, I'd rather just be your friend.”

Kara giggled and hopped down from Rusty's arms, hitting the floor with a heavy THUD! She ran over to Oni and hugged her around her legs. “Yay!”

Rusty blinked. “Jeez. She's really heavy now. Even for me.”

Silver shrugged with her hands up. “I examined her, you know, being a sorta medic. Her bones are really dense. Like a brahmin. Nearly unbreakable. Also...” She looked at Kara. “Kara? Show Mama your claws.”

Kara let Oni go and turned to face Rusty. She flexed her paws, and 2 inch claws sprang from the tip of each of her fingers.

“Holy.” Rusty gasped.

“Yikes!” Vixen said out of surprise.

“Sharp as heck, too.” AJ said as she pointed with her thumb to a 4x4 standing upright in the corner. It had deep gouges in it. “Nearly cut through that 4x4.”

“That's my scratching post!” Kara exclaimed happily. “Mommy and Auntie Silver said I can't use my claws on the furniture.”

“That's a really good idea, Kitten.” Rusty said with a nod. She looked at AJ, “So, um... how'd your work go? Before everything happened with Kara?” “Oh. Right,” AJ gestured for them all to sit down. She waited for her seemingly ever growing family to sit of the various seats. Kara sat on Rusty's lap. AJ picked up the formula. “So, uh, I managed to fill in the gaps for the bio-fuel formula enough make it. Although, there are still pieces missing.”

“Which means?” Vixen asked, curiously.

“Which means we can make it, but it won't be as efficient as the formula suggest.” AJ answered.

“Wait,” Oni said suddenly. “Is that the formula that the Institute was working on?”

AJ looked at the pages. “Uh, not exactly the same one. Vix found it at an old Military base nearby.” She handed the pages to Oni. “Why?”

Oni quickly thumbed her way through it. “I can help fix this.” She looked AJ and tapped the side of her head. “I have the collected knowledge of the Institute in my memory banks.”

“So, you're not only a synth, but you're also a walking computer?” Vixen asked.

“To put it simply.” Oni answered. “See, the computers they used in the Institute and in the wastes, use vacuum tubes. I have a prototype called a microchip. It allows me to think faster. So, the Institute used my as a Data back-up.”

AJ whistled impressively. “Okay. So, can you fill in the gaps I couldn't?”

To answer her, Oni picked up a pencil and started writing. After a few moments, she set the pencil down. “There. With the changes I made, I made it a bit more efficient.”

AJ looked at the papers. “Yeah, I can see that. So, instead of 6 barrels of fuel, we only need four.” She looked over the notes. “Ah. You added Ethanol using grain. Smart.”

Vixen looked at Silver. “So, using the crops we have, we can make fuel for the car. How?”

“We need a distiller.” Silver answered. “I think we can get the parts from Albany.”

“That's the best place to start.” Rusty said. She frowned as she heard Kara's stomach growl. “Hungry, Kitten?”

Kara nodded. “Uh-huh. Imma really hungry.”

Silver giggled. “Again? You ate two bowls of noddles an hour ago.”

“Can't help it.” Kara said simply. “I'm a bigger girl now.”

Silver shook her head and giggled more. “Sure. We have some brahmin steaks. I'll cook them up. Mind helping me, AJ?”

AJ headed to the kitchen with Silver. While they did that, Oni looked at Kara. “So, um Rusty? I take it that Rusty is your biological daughter.”

Rusty hugged Kara tightly and nodded. “She is.”

“I have to admit,” Vixen said, “She's talking really well, you know, considering how she grew up so quick.”

Kara looked at Vixen. “I heard you guys talking when I was a baby.” She said. “I was kinda learning how to talk, just... couldn't.”

“What about reading and writing?” Oni asked.

“Uh, I don't know how.” Kara shook her head. “Can you teach me?”

Oni smiled. “Sure thing, Kara.”

They grow up so fast. It is nice to see Silver and Vixen get a nice, little, sister/daughter. It is also good to see that all of the Institute,s knowledge didn't disappear and is actually being put to a good use now. Hopefully Kara won't come out with to much more surprises.
