Journey to Re-Brand Veganism

@brandedvegan-blog / brandedvegan-blog.tumblr.com

Vegans are branded by society. It can get annoying. Instead of fighting it, lets use it in our favor!

Hey Guys! I created this design because vegans are “branded” by societies stereotypes just like cows are branded by farmers. The BV on the shirt is meant to resemble a branding iron used on cattle. Let me know what you guys think, this is my first design! Use code EARLY18 to save 18% until November 6th!

I was excited when I saw this beauty at the store today! It was pretty fricken delicious. The texture was great too… Nice and creamy almondmilk base :). This also marks the first 1.5 quart I have ever been able to buy as a Vegan. Check stores near you and see if it’s made it’s way to your home town :). I would suggest this to anyone wanting to try dairy free ice cream. Definitely the best quality to price ratio out of any vegan ice cream I have had (only $5). One of my new favorites!

(And don’t mind the still wet lid behind it from making some awesome veggie wild rice haha 🍚 )

Eventually I realized that all animals, including humans, exist for their own reasons, with their own interests. This was a profound revelation for me because that nagging little voice in the back of my mind had always, since childhood, told me that I wasn’t living to my full, authentic potential, that there was something inherently wrong. All my life I had observed the community that existed in a cow herd, how they grieved for a dead calf or herd mate that had been shot by a deer hunter. I had witnessed the joy a cow experiences when she is let out into a fresh new pasture or calves running and kicking up their heels with each other in the field. I now knew for certain that regardless of the rationalizations I had created, when I killed an animal and saw that light leave their eyes, by extinguishing that divine spark, I had broken a sacred trust.

Truly inspirational. One of my new fav quotes.

The fact is I struggle to buy myself healthy meals let alone vegan ones. As soon as I try to strive for anything remotely vegan my whole budget is spent on one meal. How do you suggest I combat this?

Hello lauraisconfusing! ♥️When we start switching to a plant based diet we can find it difficult and even expensive since we actually don’t know how to shop without expending lots of money. Fake meats and substitutions can be very expensive depending on where you live, but it doesn’t mean that your whole diet should be expensive.

I don’t buy those products often, I rather make the stuff myself. For example, see this lentil pattie I make and all you need is a bag of lentils, which are very cheap, some condiments and that’s it! Also here are some links that may help you out making a shopping list that is adequate to your budget!

Fruit and vegetables fall into five different colour categories: red, purple/blue, orange, green and white/brown. Each colour carries its own set of unique disease-fighting chemicals called phytochemicals. It is these phytochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colour and of course some of their healthy properties. What’s in a colour? RED Red fruits and vegetables are coloured by a natural plant pigment called lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer and keep our heart healthy. PURPLE /BLUE The plant pigment anthocyanin is what gives blue/purple fruits and vegetables their distinctive colour. Anthocyanin also has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage and can help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease. ORANGE/YELLOW Carotenoids give this group their vibrant colour. A well-known carotenoid called Betacarotene is found in sweet potatoes, pumpkins and carrots. It is converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes. Another carotenoid called lutein is stored in the eye and has been found to prevent cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness. GREEN Green vegetables contain a range of phytochemicals including carotenoids, indoles and saponins, all of which have anti-cancer properties. Leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli are also excellent sources of folate. BROWN/WHITE White fruits and vegetables contain a range of health-promoting phytochemicals such as allicin (found in garlic) which is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Some members of the white group, such as bananas and potatoes, are also a good source of potassium.

This is why you can thrive on a Vegan diet! Eat colorful plants and take your B12 and you will be the healthiest person you know :). Take care of yourself, animals, and the planet all at once!

5 Films That Will Inspire You to Leave Animals off the Menu

1. Earthlings Inspiring countless people to ditch meat, this 2005 documentary narrated by famed actor Joaquin Phoenix explores our relationship with non-human animals, including those used in food production. 2. Forks Over Knives Struggling with heart disease? Looking to reduce your risk of cancer? This film details the health benefits of a plant-based diet, including reduced risk and even reversal of most chronic diseases. 3. Speciesism: The Movie This film addresses the core concepts of Peter Singer’s seminal book, Animal Liberation, with a touch of much-needed humor. 4. Cowspiracy Released just last year, this documentary explains how our meat-heavy diets impact everything from climate change and species extinction to land and water wastage. You’ll never look at meat the same way again. 5. Vegucated This film documents three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers on their journey towards a vegan diet, including the often humorous challenges they face along the way.

Some of the best videos to watch if you're interested in Veganism. The first one I ever watched was Earthlings and I haven't looked back since. They can be good to watch as you transition to Veganism to perhaps remind you of reasons you chose to go vegan in the first place. Just know that it is normal to start second guessing yourself, especially after a life of being told you need meat to be healthy. For me...seeing is believing and these videos gave me more than enough reason to stick to a vegan diet and break through the misinformation we have all been fed from a young age.

some quick tips for vegans

  • always buy food in bulk, because it’s cheaper + you don’t have to go grocery shopping as often
  • if you can’t get ahold of the packaging label, just don’t eat it. instead, you can bring your own food/snacks everywhere
  • make a shopping list and go grocery shopping as needed
  • read the ingredients. all the time. especially if you’re eating out/buying food/eating someone else’s food
  • get a rice cooker!!! i swear it’s so easy + fast to make rice and this way u can be super lazy and cook fast and delicious meals (like me)
  • only buy the staples, then make fancier meals out of them. don’t go crazy buying fancy vegan foods, because you will spend a lot of money.
  • for body products/makeup/etc., you could spend more money and buy from the explicitly vegan brands, or you can buy from everyday drugstore brands and just check the labels super thoroughly. it just depends on your budget.
  • frozen fruits and vegetables!!! they’re cheaper + they last longer
  • almond milk is AH-mazing and every vegan should try it. heck, you should try it even if you’re not vegan almond milk is LIFe
  • trader joe’s has a lot of great vegan foods and it’s wayyyy cheaper than whole foods
  • fruits and vegetables are great for meals/snacks
  • smoothies!!!
  • it’s okay if you can’t afford to go completely vegan. (as in, you can’t buy only vegan clothes/makeup/body products) baby steps. you’ll get there.
  • don’t beat yourself up if you accidentally eat something non-vegan! we’ve all done it, and it’s okay. just be more careful next time!
  • good luck with your vegan journey! it’s a wonderful, life-changing experience, and I encourage you all to try it! ~mel

Awesome tips from @thegrangersapprentice ! I don't know what I would do without my rice cooker, I use it almost every day. They are also great for steaming veggies and starches! I also suggest buying some glass tupperware (I don't like microwaving in plastic bowls) and prepping some vegan meals for a couple days. That way you don't have to make last minute decisions at the end of the day when you're exhausted from work or school :).

✨✨My Vegan Hacks✨✨

(Disclaimer: This advice is coming from a 17 yo black girl living in a near food desert. Over the past 3 years and counting of being vegan, I have learned a few things.))

Money Saving: ✨Rice and beans is your best friend. It’s really filling and doesn’t easily overburden your palate (I can have it for dinner repeatedly). Add veggies for more nutrients and variety.🍛 ✨Frozen fruit. All the nutrients are preserved and they work amazingly for smoothies and summer days :) ❄ ✨Canned food. May not be the healthiest. I just suggest that you nix the brine or choose the low-fat/sugar-free options.🍶 ✨Weigh your options. Sure, that new chick'n strip package or coconut icecream looks delicious, but are they as essential, healthy, or inexpensive as your trusty firm tofu and coconut milk? Didn’t think so.♎ ✨I don’t do takeout (unless in emergency). It can become an expensive crutch. Also, homemade food just tastes better.🍟

Health & Beauty: ✨Use sites like iherb to find new products for your medicine cabinet. They often have sales, free shipping, and label the vegan/cruelty-free items.💻 ✨DIYs are the best route. Body butters, perfumes, and face masks are simpler to make than you know.💄 ✨Make food your first medicine. I think it is important (not just for vegans) to become less dependent on over-the-counter drugs. Ginger can be your new Oragel, turmeric your acne spot treatment, etc.💊 ✨DO NOT COUNT CALORIES. A vegan diet is one that can be altered to your tastebuds and hunger patterns. If you eat accordingly (with limits on processed food) and you have no extenuating ailments, you will see your body improve without effort. Besides, calories are energy. You don’t want to harm your body by limiting its functions and processes. (If you have problems with binge eating, try drinking enough water at the appropriate times)😊

Meal Planning: ✨I either use my bullet journal or mah cranial organ to plan what I would like to eat. 📒 ✨I suggest giving yourself some variety by getting vegan inspiration from Tumblr, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.💭 ✨Find out what accidental and non-accidental vegan products are available at your local grocery store/supermarket/corner store.🏢 ✨Take note of your favorite recipes. Use them as a backup for when your recipes fail or to use as a comfort dish.♨

For your tastebuds: ✨I eat raw till 4 for one week every year. It reminds my tastebuds how naturally flavorful plants can be (trust me–I grew up in a Caribbean household where salt, sugar, and a myriad of spices were liberally used. Just try it for yourself).🍌 ✨Coconut milk (the canned kind) will transform your rice and beans (or another dish–savory or sweet).🍼 ✨Get the nutrients you need by putting the things you hate (but are packed with goodness) in a smoothie. Bananas are sweeter than they seem. They even mask the bitter taste of kale.🌱 ✨Drink ENOUGH water. It is a palate cleanser in addition to an essential to your body.🚰

Attitude: ✨On telling people about your diet: I am not the kind of vegan who tells everyone about my eating habits (no shade if you do…i just don’t bring it up). Still, I find that my lifestyle makes an impact. People around me realize that I’m vegan from my meals and, soon enough, they begin asking daily what I have packed for lunch. Many of my friends have tried being vegan for some period of time.💬
