“Is SHIELD so desperate that they allow to recruit women here?” 

Vlad says loudly, placing the glass down before bringing up his hand to rub his jaw as he chuckles. But nobody else on his table or the other dares to chuckle or laugh. As the room goes quiet, the man feels something like a touch of ice on his heart, like a recollection or, more exactly, a reminder, of something agonizing and revolting that is in that room now, at that moment, Bucky Barnes has heard him speak—he changes the expression of joy on his lips to one of alarm, but he doesn’t dare move from his seat. Someone makes his presence known, quiet thud of his boots cracking the stillness. The deathlike silence is broken—he seems petrified when he hears the melodious ringing sounds of Bucky’s dog tag chimes deep into his soul as if a funeral bell is ringing, pealing for his farewell. He puts the metal arm on the man’s shoulder—a beautiful yet deadly ornament, he can’t shake hands with the Devil and not get sulphur on his hands—his arm is a reminder not only to himself, but to others as well.

My only excuse is that COVID wreaked absolute havoc on my life in every way it could for the last 2 years. But I digress…I promised I would see this story through, so here I am :)

This chapter picks up the night before Eric and Jade’s wedding, when what’s been done in the dark is brought to light, for more than one unfortunate soul. Jade finally settles things with Ayden for good (so she thinks), Eric does the same with his father, and Brady finally gains some clues about what’s plaguing Leah, though it will be presented in a misconstrued way. Rachel and Sebastian will begin to come to terms, and Brady will prove exactly why men shouldn’t always listen to their friends’ advice about women. No smut (saving the good stuff for later), but the other usual: profanity, angst, and parental death, mentions of suicide. Enjoy!

You lifted your eyes to find Steve and Sam staring at you with varying levels of wariness. “Y’all done?” Sam asked, eyebrow raised.

Bucky glared at him. “I hate him.”

You smacked Bucky gently and turned a smile on Sam. “Don’t suppose either of you have a pack of cards to pass the time until Tasha gets back?”

You took one look at Steve, the little blue beetle he’d stolen, and wordlessly got into the driver’s seat. Both Bucky and Steve paled a little at that, ignoring Sam’s confused looks and vaguely rebellious glances at the sight of you sitting there. When he whispered something to Steve, the blond man glanced up at you, shook his head as subtly as he could, and crammed himself into the back seat with Sam following closely behind.

The drive to the rendezvous had been short and tense and by the end of it Bucky and Steve were a little green and Sam’s lips were slammed shut so tightly you just knew he was fighting back the urge to hack up his breakfast.

Bucky couldn’t watch, he had resulted to cleaning the blood from between the joints on his metal hand. The quinjet hummed slowly, providing little comfort to Bucky’s swirling thoughts.  Steve and Wanda were talking quietly, not quietly enough for Bucky’s liking. 

“Did you read yours?” Steve asked, gesturing to the letter that Wanda had clutched in her hand 

“No, I won’t. She wrote it for me to read when she wasn’t here. She is here. I don’t need to read it” Wanda said sadly, her letter was still sealed in the envelope with her name neatly swirled on the front. Her eyes fell on Y/N’s sleeping frame, Tony had taken the decision to sedate her, she had refused to be taken out of the cell, still clutching desperately to the hope of death. They had all tried their hardest to level with her, but nothing worked, everyone had tried their best, everyone except Bucky. He couldn’t find a single word to say to her as she was desperately asking everyone to kill her. 

“We will be landing at the compound in ten minutes” Tony said to nobody in particular but everyone stopped and listened 

“I think we should take her to a hospital” Nat said calmly, she was too calm for Bucky’s liking. He couldn’t understand how she wasn’t tearing herself apart for letting Y/N get to this state. 

“She needs to be at home” Tony said firmly 

“The compound isn’t her home” Nat answered curtly 

“It used to be” Wanda mused, thinking of the days that Y/N had spent wandering around the compound as she watched Bucky training, or cooking together, it used to be her home. 

“It isn’t now” Clint agreed with Nat, “A few months ago I would have said the same Tony, but now, well now she needs to be at a hospital. She needs to be given the choice to come back with us”
