“I think he did... I mean, I don’t know for sure, I never told you and we never really talked about it, but I don’t think he had any reason not to tell you.” Lola had never asked Jake, because she didn’t want to talk about Kenny’s condition behind his back, or without his permission.

“Yeah, you’re in line to be the next Guardian of Hope.” She told him, specifically opting not to mention that it was also the role of the Easter Bunny. “The Guardian of Hope is one of those responsible for looking out for all the children of the world, protecting them from evil and making sure that hope stays alive in their hearts.” She explained. “That’s about right, you love a good workout... did you want to go to the gym sometime? We could... go together, if you want.”

Aurora shrugged. “He didn’t tell you? Well, he’s not that odd, considering... he promised me he’d tell me if the voices wanted him to do anything bad.” She was concerned about it, but Kenny was an adult. She wouldn’t make him seek help unless there were signs he might hurt himself or others.

“You were never lazy,” she disagreed, sitting down on the towel next to him again. “And I’m pretty sure you know every language in the world as it is, that’s a lot to know already. You just didn’t want to spend a lot of time learning something you wouldn’t use, since you already know what you’re going to do. The only reason you even came to University is because I was going and we wanted to live together.” She explained, Jake had never said as much but it was what she’d always figured. “Besides, you spent so many hours at the gym everyday, I don’t think you wanted to spend that time studying instead.”

“Shut up, I miss swooning over him.” She whined, although even that made her feel guiltier because she wanted him back, but it was her fault he was gone. “I worry about falling for him like this, because... is it really even him? If I kiss him without his memories, without him knowing who he is, is it like I’m cheating on Jake?”

Lola had never paused to wonder if his skin could burn, but the sun was damaging anyway so she figured the sunscreen couldn’t hurt him. She giggled when Jake echoed her thoughts about Kenny, and she finished up with his back, wiping her hands on a towel as she stood up.

“Well, his father was known as the Mad Hatter.” She explained, that was why Kenny was so focused on semantics. “Tell me if he does anything too weird... he’s had a handle on the voices for a while but I still like to check up on him now and then.” She worried about him, even if she didn’t voice it often. “Yeah, I think you just wanted a major you could ace. But you met Kenny there, so it was worth it.”

Lola stood up once he was finished, moving around behind him to take her turn smoothing the sunscreen over his muscular back, reminding her body to be good while she was touching him. This was purely professional, health-related touching, she told herself even as her stomach twisted.

“I don’t think you ever did meet her, actually. I only met her once, at a clothing store. She was odd.” She didn’t want to say bad things about Kenny’s ex, so she left it there, even knowing Kenny could be a little odd himself. “How are your classes? That professor still giving you a hard time?” She knew that Jake had used to like correcting one of his professors back when he had his memories, and that professor always gave him a hard time, only now Jake had no memory of why.

“He did push-ups with you on his back?” She smiled, her heart fluttering a bit. She’d done the same thing in the past, but Kenny was much larger than she was. God, she needed to get laid badly, but she wasn’t about to tell Kenny that. “Do you really think so? It’s still so awkward with him sometimes, I’m trying not to pressure him, but I do things without thinking about it... even before we started dating, I used to kiss him all the time. Now if I touch his hand I’m worried it’s too much.” She bit her lip. “Maybe I’ll invite him to the gym with just me? Do you think he’ll go?”

“Push ups in the kitchen?” Lola giggled, that sounded like her Jake at least. She raised a brow at the face he made at the mention of the gym. “It won’t be like when he trains you, you can goof off and do yoga with me.” She bit her lip when he suggested she invite him herself, hesitating. She’d been relying a lot on Kenny to set up their ‘dates’ because she was worried about things being awkward between her and Jake. “I know, and I appreciate it... it’s just so weird trying to figure out where I stand with him. Does he even like me?”

The way he touched her skin sent a shiver up her spine, making her crave more contact. She missed little touches like that, the way he would touch her back or her leg whenever she was close enough. She leaned into his touch before she could stop herself, her body responding to his automatically, instinctively.

“I never liked her,” Lola admitted. She’d never said as much to Kenny, but she rarely liked her siblings’ significant others and Kenny was probably as close to her as her siblings were. “She was never good enough for him. Is he very upset? Aside from the break up music.”

“Is he still going to the gym?” Lola asked, if he wasn’t she’d have another thing to worry about, him losing another part of himself to this curse. “Maybe we should take him, we can mess with him again, see if he’ll actually have fun with us.” She suggested, she wanted to spend more time with him but she always worried she was putting too much pressure on him.

Lola finished putting her sunscreen everywhere she could reach, then she moved closer to him, kneeling next to him and pulling her hair forward over her shoulder to expose her back.

“What’ve you and Kenny been up to lately?” She asked, although it seemed weird to make small talk with him. Normally she’d know everything going on in his life, he’d text her about anything out of the ordinary and they’d talk about everything. Or, sometimes she’d just talk and he’d listen. She missed knowing what was going on with him, she missed living with him and sharing their lives. She even felt guilty coming here today, knowing that she should be working on a cure.

Being at the beach with him reminded him of their first date, when they’d gone to Mexico to get away from the frigid school trip to Arendelle. She rubbed the sunscreen on her arms and front, smiling at Jake.

“Well, I’ll do your back if you’ll do mine?” She offered. “I have to wear lots of sunscreen; being a ginger means that I don’t tan, I burn right away. And I don’t need any more freckles.”

Sure enough, Duckie came scrabbling out of the bedroom a moment later, pawing at Kenny’s legs. “He’s not sleeping well either? Well... we do best when we’re together,” she scuffed her toe against the floor with a sigh. “I miss him so much, Kenny.” She admitted, his absence was having a very bad effect on her mood and state of mind.

Lola was wearing a little white sun dress over her bathing suit, so she stood up to slide the straps off her shoulders, letting it flutter to the ground. Her bikini was sea-foam green and tiny, she’d never had a problem showing off her body. She couldn’t help stealing a glance at Jake’s bare chest, her heart stuttering briefly. God, she missed him so much, more than his body but seeing it again reminded her of what she had lost.

She averted her gaze quickly, taking out her own sunscreen, she sat down on the blanket to rub it over her legs. “Let me know if you need any help with those hard-to-reach places,” she offered, quirking her lips up a little, her tone unintentionally flirtatious.

Jacob was still staring after the hatter as he sprinted off down the path back up to the street. It had been such a sudden change in the boys attitude that he felt he had whiplash, but maybe he was getting used to it at this point. He’d been doing this to him for weeks. 

Jacob looks at Lola after he can no longer see Kenneth and makes a shrugging gesture, customary to this sort of thing happening to them all the time. 

Lola rolled her eyes at the retreating Hatter, thinking to herself that it was real subtle. He’d been pulling this for weeks now, getting them together and then making up an excuse to run off and leave them alone. She had a feeling he was trying to send them on dates, and she wondered if Jake had picked up on it yet.

“That’s Kenny for you,” she sighed, dropping her beach bag in the sand, she pulled out a large blanket and started shaking it out over the sand. “Did you already put on sunscreen?” She asked, kneeling down and pulling a bottle out of her bag.

[Kenny]: Mama?

[Kenny]: MAMA? YOU’RE HOME RIGHT?

[Kenny]: I’m sorta already at your door so it’ll be awk to have to leave i passed your neighbours on the stairs?

Lola hadn’t been sleeping well at night on her own, so she’d wound up oversleeping and had missed the buzzing of her phone. Sleepily, she checked it, then swore under her breath, hurrying to the door to pull it open. “Sorry, Kenny,” she breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn’t already left. Her hair was a mess and she was wearing one of Jake’s old t-shirts and a pair of little shorts to sleep in, it was obvious she had just woken up. “What’s up?” She asked, stepping to the side to let him in.

“Nah, I don’t eat very much.” She explained, urging him to take the rest. “Kenny’s a good friend, you guys are both majoring in Italian. He’s trustworthy, you can count on him if you need anything and I’m not around,” she explained, not sure how much she should tell him. He was Jake’s best friend, but he got nervous when people he was close to told him how much they meant to him, like he should remember. “He knows about your memory loss, so if you talk to him, you won’t have to explain everything.”
