i have attended the wedding of a couple who met because one of them commented on a freaky smut fic that the other one wrote

(one of them proposed during a panel they were both on about omegaverse)

comments make a difference in people's lives

The fic can be years old, but a single comment of "This made my day brighter" or "This made me cry" or "I adore this"?

It's enough to lift a writer's mood, fire their writing for a week, help them start something new.

Alrighty, here is something for this Reverse Omens au, with Aziraphale, the ex-musician, and Crowley, the plant shop owner, meeting after nearly twenty years since the first time they did.

It really was one of those wandering thoughts, you know the kind, where you let your mind drift and suddenly you become focused on something when you hadn’t meant to.

For Aziraphale, it had been the idea of his home having some greenery in it. He had read that plants can make a place seem more homey, welcoming, they can even be a stress reducer! If you manage to keep them alive after a month, of course. 

He thought about it for a while, then decided, yes, it was the right thing to do. While he loved his little shop of old objects and books, such things weren’t always so bright and colorful as a flowering plant or something with large, lush leaves. His shop was dusty, mainly shades of brown and tan, and smelled like old paper and something… off.

But it was his home, and had been for about twelve years now. Or, at least, twelve years since he finally came back from the states since his retirement in the music industry.

the notes on that last poll are insane there was someone who said they separate fics into "porn" and "story" and they didnt stop for a second to think that sex in and of itself might be a story??? the way some of you people trivialize sex and explicit art is fucking bonkers to me. you sound like a christian when you act like sex cheapens art or like art focusing on sex is a completely separate category from non-sexual art. explicit fics, yes even pwp (which i believe is a misnomer anyways), are telling stories and they're stories worth telling because sex is normal and healthy and deeply important to many of us. just because something gets you off doesn't mean it's cheap or meaningless. i'd argue that things that engage the viewer sexually are very meaningful because human sexuality is complex and beautiful and worth sharing and exploring. Grow up and read about the guys you like sucking eachother off

"i'm here for the character development/analysis not smut" if you think that explicit art is vapid and can't meaningfully explore a character's thoughts, behaviors, and desires, you are a catholic youth pastor and i hope you get well soon

The inherent intimacy of characters baring themselves in every possible way. The trust, the vulnerability of letting their guard down and taking the risk, the chance, to be with someone. To see the reverence and the awe or, in the opposite direction, the disdain and dismissiveness of the characters and how that changes their dynamic beyond the bedroom. Showing their colours behind closed doors. To see people laughing and giggling and having fun with the person they love, playing and loving and loving and playing. To see the last urgent, desperate night together before the end of the world.

Everything can tell a story, including sex in a narrative.

pratchett will write an entire book about the grim reaper pretending to be santa claus while the grim reaper’s granddaughter goes about hunting down the dumbass who decided to kill santa, and then right when you think you’re done and the oddly pointed shenanigans are winding down he hits you with “humans need fantasy to be human. to be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape,” and knocks you into next wednesday

I adore the falling angel and rising ape quote as much as anyone, but that’s actually not the bit that takes me out at the knees every time I reread Hogfather.

No, that honour is reserved for the moment at the end of the book when Susan throws the iron poker.

Context: Susan is a governess. She has two children in her care, and she has responded to their fears of monsters under the bed etc by beating those monsters up with the poker. It’s Discworld, so the monsters are real… but also it’s Discworld, so the fact that the children believe the poker can deal with anything is Important.

During the finale of the book, these two children walk in on a confrontation featuring a) their governess Susan, b) the literal incarnation of Death (seven foot tall skeleton in black robes) who is, at that time, eating a biscuit, and c) a human man who enjoys torture and is not shy about communicating that fact. The human man steps behind Death for cover. Susan throws the poker at him anyway. The poker passes through Death without harming him, and skewers the human man. Who chokes out in his dying moments an affronted question as to HOW that could possibly have happened.

And one of the children says, calmly, “It only kills monsters.”
