A periodic reminder that mainstream acceptance of queers is still very recent, we have not had it for long, only almost a decade, that's why republicans are so committed to destroying them, they want to make our rights a blip
I'm old enough to remember when the progressive proposal for some kind of recognition of same-sex partnerships were civil unions starting on state/municipal levels which wouldn't be seen as the same as marriages but would at least allow people POA/hospital visits/family law and property protections, something that was VERY important and not possible during the worst of the AIDS crisis. This is still huge, it is recent, it is transformative and it can be taken away by people who hate that it passed in the first place. (See also the ACA) Please recognize how recent and hard-won progress like this is and fight like hell to defend it.
Queer rep is still being suppressed. Rebecca Sugar had to threaten to quit because Cartoon Network was going to end Steven Universe after Garnet’s wedding because it was a lesbian wedding. Rebecca also purposefully put Ruby in the dress because dubs in other languages would cast her with a male voice to make the couple seem heterosexual.
