Chapter 19 - Stitch Me Up
Two Months Later
The desert city of Twentynine Palms, California was located in the Mojave Desert and sat on the northern side of the Joshua Tree National Park and promoted the motto “a beautiful desert oasis”.
It wasn’t small but it was huge either, with a population of around twenty five thousand, making it a great place for two people to hide in plain sight. And given its desert location, the temperature this time of year was over one hundred and five, a stark contrast from tiny little Colorado mountain towns.
Samuel and Violet Truman of Arizona had moved out west and rented themselves a little fully furnished three bed, single storey home on Chia Avenue in a quiet suburb of Twentynine Palms. They arrived two weeks ago after spending some six weeks travelling the states with their travel companions Jack and Lily Waters.
From the outside their home left a lot to be desired, with its rickety metal fence and lone palm tree in the sandy front yard. But the inside was so modern and sheek that the couple had signed a lease on the spot.
From the outside looking in, you and Spencer were the idyllic all American couple. And admittedly, from the inside you were also pretty damn happy.
This is so good!
Three observations:
1. The reader is showing symptoms of pregnancy.
2. Luke is getting on my nerves…let it go…the reader made her decision.
3. And I have a feeling Jesse isn’t going to be too long for this world.

Spencer entered the apartment as quietly as he could, hanging up his bag and coat and taking off his shoes. He made his way to the bedroom, where he found you sleeping soundly, curled up under the covers. Quickly and quietly he changed and got ready for bed, climbing in beside you carefully as to not disturb you. He pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead, worrying he woke you when you stirred a bit, only to move closer to him subconsciously. He smiled, his entire being filled with love and adoration for you, before drifting off to sleep himself.
You were barely conscious but you were cold. Your eyes fluttered open softly to see your boyfriend sleeping peacefully next to you, with all the covers. Looking down, you noticed you had part of the sheet. Pouting, you tried to gently take back the covers, trying not to wake him in the process. However, he just stirred gently and continued to sleep. You sighed, now having to resort to waking him up. “Spence. Spence wake up.” You shook him gently, smiling when his chocolate brown eyes opened. “Mmm what is it love?” He said groggily.
“I’m cold.” You pouted, making him chuckle. “Why’d you wake me up?” He smiled. “You have all the blankets!” You pouted, making him smile even bigger. “C'mere.” He mumbled, pulling you down to him. “Jesus you are cold!” He gasped, feeling your cold body against his. “Yeah but you’re warm.” You smiled, nuzzling closer to him. “Here we go. Is that better?” He asked, wrapping you up in the comforters. You nodded, feeling your eyes get heavy with sleep. “Night Spence.” You yawned, falling asleep. “Night sweetheart.” He whispered, drawing shapes on your back as he fell back asleep.

Chapter 13 - Different Songs
The self proclaimed, “world famous” Wooden Nickel, at two hundred and twenty two Elk Avenue, was sandwiched between Mountain Spirits Liquor Store and the Princess Wine Bar. It had a pink wooden facade with green detailing around the doors and windows and was conveniently located just a short walk from your cabin.
The inside was all dark leather and even darker wood, its colour scheme oddly similar to Spencer’s apartment. It had an old fireplace with a wrap-around bench for snuggling up and getting warm, dim lighting and deer and elk heads mounted on the walls.
They had a small and expensive menu on offer but you couldn’t deny the smell of the food cooking that wafted from the kitchen was out of this world. You were taking it all in, eyes bouncing around the room as Spencer seemed to hurriedly lead you with a hand on your lower back to a booth over the back of the room.
It only took a brief glance at the bar for you to quickly spot the bright red head of hair to know why. You rolled your eyes and he continued motioning you along.
I swear, I’m going to slap some sense into those two !

Reid and Max celebrate their first Halloween together.
He can’t help but smile with her by his side. Everything is better with her, even Halloween. He spent the afternoon helping her hand out candy for the museum’s Halloween celebration, and now she twines her fingers through his as he knocks on Rossi’s door. The older agent answers, wearing a suit with a red rose in his lapel.
“I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse,” Rossi says, gesturing inside. “Come in and join the party.”
“Vito Corleone, I love it!” Max says. Reid looks at her perplexed. “The Godfather?” she hints. “Really? Oh, we’re gonna have to have another movie date.”
“At least your girlfriend has taste,” Rossi teases, welcoming them both with hugs. Inside is a whimsical array of food, desserts, and drinks. The whole extended BAU family is present - Henry and Michael are running around in Spider-Man costumes, Garcia and Luke are dressed as Rey and Kylo Ren, and the Simmons clan seems to have covered almost every character from Stranger Things, with Rosemary as a baby Eleven.
Morgan finds them from across the room, dressed in a baby blue suit with a large gold necklace. “Okay, what on earth are you two supposed to be?” he asks, grinning. Reid wears a suit with an ascot tied in a bow and fake mustache. Max has a black dress and a feather boa, winged eyeliner, and headpiece covered in black feathers.
“Nevermore,” Max says.
“I still don’t get it.”
“Edgar Allen Poe,” Reid replies, as though it should be obvious, gesturing to himself then to Max, “and ‘The Raven.’”
“I didn’t realize I needed to brush up on my 17th century literature before coming,” Morgan laughs. Reid starts to correct him but is interrupted by the arrival of Savannah.
“Oh, don’t tease babe, it’s cute,” she says, punching his arm playfully. She wears a matching suit that’s bright pink, donning a long wavy wig and a diamond necklace.
“Well thanks,” Max answers. “You two make a fantastic Mr. and Mrs. Carter. I’m Max, by the way.”
“Savannah Morgan, it’s nice to finally meet you.” The two exchange cheerful small talk while Morgan and Reid catch up. It’s not the first time that night they have to explain their costume - not everyone shares their love for poetry, though Garcia and Tara identify it right away. There is plenty of merriment and laughter and sweets to make the night a wonderful reverie. They carve pumpkins and he and Garcia narrate a dramatic spooky story with gorgeous props and decorations Max has supplied.
As Rossi tries to get Hocus Pocus started downstairs in his home theatre (because of course he has a home theatre), he finds Max in the kitchen stocking up on popcorn. “Does it ever bother you?” he asks.
“Does what bother me?”
“That there’s so many things I don’t know. I don’t keep up with pop culture, I miss social cues, I’m weird.” He hasn’t missed the fact that Max makes sense of everyone’s costume and seems to navigate a party of people he’s known for years with an ease that took him ages to find.
“So you don’t watch hours of Netflix. That doesn’t bother me a bit. You know the things that matter. Like all my favorite artists, and how to make kids smile with an amazing story like the one you two just told.” Max takes his hand and places it on her chest. The silky fabric of her dress is slippery beneath his palm. He can feel her heartbeat quicken as she does so, though the rate of her pulse is nearly drowned out by the thundering sound of his own.
“Listen to my “Tell-Tale Heart,”” she says, smiling up at him. “I could never love anyone more.”
He grins in spite of himself. “Nor, I,” he replies. “Nevermore.” He leans in to kiss her, carefully dodging the feathers on her headpiece.
“Hey lovebirds!” Will’s voice startles them apart. “Are you gonna come watch the movie or should we just leave you alone up here?”
