Cinderella: A social Commentary Story
Ella grew up in a beautiful home with a loving mother and father. Her family didn’t have a lot of things, but they did have a lot of love. Ella’s father was a merchant who traveled the world, selling his wares in all sorts of far off counties. Her mother spent her time tending the animals on their small farm in the countryside.
All seemed well for Ella’s family, until one evening Ella’s mother fell ill. Ella tried with all her might for the next days to help her mother, but on the morning of the fifth day, her mother passed on. Ella’s father saw how heart broken his child was, and so he married again to a woman with two daughters. Her elder daughter, Adeline, was cruel and selfish, desiring only the most beautiful things in the world. Her younger daughter, Aimee, was a spitfire with a passion for what was right.
Ella’s new stepmother, Anais, appeared gentle on the surface. When Ella’s father left on another journey to sell his wares, Anais initially treated Ella gently. On summer afternoon, though, Ella’s father’s friend came to the farm with news. Ella’s father had been in an accident and had died.
Anais took to her bedroom, mourning the loss of her new husband. This tragedy hardened Anais’ heart. When she emerged from the bedroom, she had a cruel look on her face, and she ordered Ella to fire the family’s two servants as Ella would be taking their place as a new scullery maid.
Aimee fought back against this change, declaring that is was not right to treat her new sister so, but Adeline only laughed and took pleasure from ordering Ella around.
Two years passed, and Aimee got involved with helping the poor in the nearby village. She always urged Ella to join her, but Ella simply had too much work to ever be able to even step foot outside the house. Ella longed to help others, but she had so little that she couldn’t even help herself.
One day, while Aimee was in the village, she saw one of the Prince’s footsoldiers abusing a young woman. Aimee rushed to the woman’s aid, punching the foot soldier across the face and inciting a riot in the town. When it was finished, most all the foot soldiers were dead, and Aimee was brought to the castle for trial.
Meanwhile, the prince was searing for a bride. He was uninterested in the nearby kingdom’s princesses, and instead called for every eligible woman in the kingdom to attend so he might choose one as his wife.
Adeline was overjoyed and made Ella get right to work fixing her a ball gown. Ella was so busy making this ball gown that she had no time to make one for herself. The night of the ball, Adeline traveled to the ball, while Ella fell exhausted into bed.
Unfortunately for Adeline, the prince was not interested in any of the woman at the ball, either, for he was instead fascinated by Aimee who he had seen while she stood trial. That night, Aimee was overjoyed when the prince dismissed her of all charges and then asked her to marry him. She agreed immediately, kissing him at midnight at the ball.
The next day, Aimee and the prince were wed, and then Aimee visited her mother’s house. She saw Ella working hard, and she came over to give her sister a hug.
“I’m confused,” Ella told Aimee. “I thought you hated the prince, and his guards, and wanted to dedicate your life to helping others escape their tyranny.”
“Well I can help a little with my new money,” Aimee shrugged. “And if I use money on myself too, that’s alright.”
That night, Aimee fell happily into the comfy bed of her new castle with a string of pearls around her neck, while Ella worked hard in her stepmother’s house until she fell asleep on the stone ground in the kitchen.
