3 September 2020 | The fall term begins in earnest next week so I’m spending this wonderfully rainy day trying to get my schedule straightened out. Also fighting the uphill battle of trying to maintain Greek.

ive trying to consciously make studying enjoyable, but also rigorous and productive lately. started by downloading forest and tidying up my desk (a very good mix of art and law obvs). today is day one. hope everyone is staying safe.

As much as I enjoy studying, I can’t wait to go back to reading things that don’t necessarily have to do with my studying.

Master Post : Connected papers, the perfect research tool for students and researchers

Connected papers is a user-friendly and free resource that creates visual webs based on similar studies as the one entered. I’ve been using it for a few weeks and it’s safe to say that this is my knight in coded armour.

These visual webs or graphs,

  • Show the paper space and interconnections among them using node colour, node size and clusters to depict connections and similarities
  • Build upon previous works and understanding – this is in the spirit of science and lets us infer by adding or contradicting facts
  • Built multiple graphs or sub-graphs in the background
  • Are a great aid for background reading and meta-analysis
  • Helps look up prior and derivative works
  • Are NOT for citations but for finding similar work

Here’s a quick walk run through on how to make the bets of this tool –

  • Enter paper details. It can be entered in form of key words, paper title, URL or paper DOI
  • Click on build a graph. Then chose the particular paper of interest and select build a graph
  • The website processes over 50,000 studies and produces a graph. Toggle the settings to take a look at list view, specific papers or the graph itself
  • Check out the most commonly cited papers by clicking on “Prior works”. For recent and relevant papers click on “Derivative works”
  • Lastly, make the best of the graph and list view by customising the arrangement. Arrange the papers according to your choice of maximum or minimum citations, reference or my personal favourite – similarity to the origin paper
