Minerals and Rocks

@mineralsandsomerocks / mineralsandsomerocks.tumblr.com

I have a BSc in Geology Honors from University of Alberta, currently working on my MSc. Mineralogy and Geology have been my passion since I was a toddler. Though it has escalated from picking up gravel from the road to spending hundreds at auctions, this has never really changed and never will.
If you have any questions or comments, ask away, I love to see things in my inbox.
All images are my own, unless reblogged or otherwise stated. Most of the minerals are my own pieces as well, though some are from collections I had the privilege of working with at the University of Alberta.

Oh my god, the opal in sandstone is one of the most beautiful rocks I've EVER seen! One of my passions is geology; &, therefore, ROCKS! (=

Are all of the rocks you post in your very own, impressive collection?

Also: I was curious what exactly you mean when labelling something like "Gypsum var. Selenium".

___ var.(iant? ) ___ = ?

Howdy! Thanks, that opal is indeed a pretty great piece. And yep, almost any original photo I post is from my own collection, with the exception of a couple pieces owned by my old supervisor at the U of A.

And close; the "var." that is often written in mineral names stands for "variety". So things like Selenite and Hackmanite are specific varieties of Gypsum and Sodalite (respectively)
