TIL that the way Japan views silent protagonists is much different from how the west sees them. It has ties to Buddhism and how Japan view the "self" much more differently than the west, with more de-emphasis on the "self"/individuality and instead trying to connect with other people and nature with the idea that "everything is transient and we're all suffering so we should connect with one another and support each other." or something along those lines.

With that in mind, I think the idea to make Byleth the silent protagonist in 3H was intentional on the developer's end, especially when you consider the other ties into Buddhism the game has with the "Enlightened One/Nirvana" mentioning how CF is the "Path of the Beast", and even with how the game is structured by bonding and forming relationships with the class/faction you choose and trying to help people out. 3H really is a Buddhist-centric game.

damn this gave me a brain blast moment

i always viewed it as byleth just being a stoic silent mercenary thing but this is very cool. 3h does seem to take a lot from buddhism

I think that it plays a role in why Edelgard meant to be the villain. Her version of "helping" people involves her asserting her will, her "self," onto Fodlan as she forces people to follow her ideals. This not seen in the best light in Japan, Digimon Adventure Tri is another example of this in action where Mimi was presented selfish for forcing her ideas on her class during the cultural festival and her believing what SHE believes is best is the best for everyone resulting in her accidentally making things worse. The fact that Edelgard is willing to cause untold suffering in the pursuit of this only makes it worse, as causing suffering is not virtuous in Buddhist beliefs.

Edelgard seems to be built around the non-virtues of Buddhism: greed/covetousness, harmful intent, wrong view by denying cause and effect, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, pointless gossip, killing, stealing and sexual misconduct. The first three are of being of wrong mind: Edelgard's desire to rule over all of Fodlan because she believes it's rightfully hers, her intent to start a war in order to reclaim Fodlan and shape it to her will, and her unwillingness to divert from this route despite any evidence such as how she supposedly knows her father, her cited historical source, was an Agarthan puppet. The next four, her lying, her harsh tone, her divisive speech while also peppering it with what amounts to gossip, is wrong under wrong speech. The fact she's willing to have people killed, steal, and even her trying to push her student/teacher dynamic with Byleth as a romantic one would put her into being wrong body.

And that's on top of the Three Poisons/Flames.

In terms of Three Houses, Edelgard is not presented as the virtuous young lady she's initially presented as, and that's one of the misconceptions the player needs to clear up for themselves by getting to know her.

In contrast, the virtues she opposes that Byleth is meant to represent are as follows. With mind, Byleth is supposed to be generous, have a loving kindness and the correct view of reality. In terms of speech, Byleth is supposed to speak honestly, pleasantly, with meaning in a way that helps reconciliation between groups. And in terms of body, the protection of life (which is mentioned in SS's Japanese ending, not Byleth judging every soul), giving generously to people while also maintaining self-discipline. Buddhism does accept that there are times when you would need to engage in the non-virtues in order to prevent suffering, but we should be aware of why we are doing so. If we're ultimately doing it for selfish reasons, for our own benefit, then the act is rendered non-virtuous.

Revisiting Yuri and Dee's support in Nopes :

It has bonkers things like :

Yes, and it's also got me thinking about how best to help those of more meager standing. Originally, I'd thought that establishing medical facilities or investing in the church were the best pathways to this cause. But after seeing the people here, I realize they are not indigents standing around with open hands awaiting salvation.

What are you talking about Dee? Medical facilities aren't anything like "salvation", it's just a place where people are healed?

Sure, some people want to participate in their life, decisions and politics so to associate them to those processes is an interesting thing... but they'd still need somewhere/someone to help/heal them, right?

And it's really where Yuri shines - and reminds us that this support can only happen in AG - because he completely corrects Dimitri, if Dimitri wants to associate commoners to decision-making, they should at first receive education :

Of course, they're already fully capable of telling you when they're hungry or if taxes are too high... But they'll need education to understand the policies and laws established by their lords and hold any kind of thoughtful opinion on them.

I love this last sentence, because man does it ring differently when you consider Yuri was the de facto guy in charge of the Abyss - where people complained in every explore section about Church/Nobles BaD - special mention to Hapi "CoS BaD they promised me they'd cure me but it has been a year since I'm here, I know I am a danger to the people living on the surface, I most likely never told them who experimented on me nor where she was nor what kind of stuff she did to me, and I haven't been cured since!"

Thoughtful opinions on policies and decisions uh?

Problem is, people aren't in the mood to learn anything when they don't know where their next meal is coming from or where they'll sleep that night.

I know some politician I love to joke about once said "morality don't feed your belly", but this is in the same vein - people can think about education/doing the "right thing" and whatnot... only when their lives aren't in immediate danger, like, say, because they're starving or on the streets.

That's where I think we have the closest "thoughts" Yuri has about the Abyss - sure it's not all roses and daisies, far from that, but it's still a place where people who have nowhere to go, well, can go, and eat.

Regardless of the Abyss...

Yuri is here to remind Dimitri that people still need to survive before receiving proper education, aka, they need "support" to be able to walk on their own legs, or decide to do what they want.

Compare this to Supreme Leader's "if the weak remain weak it's because they're too used on rely on others" and while I really dislike how Dimitri was teetering to close to that edge on his own and only reconsidered when Yuri reminded him of, uh, something that should be common sense - for a Fodlan game, I still find it very nice that this issue was adressed (and it even recontextualises the Abyss from FE16, something FE16 couldn't do bcs, Church BaD).

Now, I know Yuri can join Tru Piss and Supreme Bullshit, but is it any wonder that his paralogue is AG oriented, his supports are AG oriented (save for the ones who are always available + Marianne) and he has no interaction with members of the Empire?

I think calling Byleth's personal class “the Enlightened One” was a mistake. Being “enlightened” means that Byleth's outlook is rational, modern and well-informed regardless of which route Byleth picks. In a way, it makes every route sound more equal. And if we think about this from the Western perspective of the Enlightenment era, it would carry implications of being more individualistic, reasonable, and breaking away from tradition which would lean more into supporting Flower. The spiritual awakening aspect is a lot further from people's minds.

Byleth can side with Edelgard, which results in them no longer being enlightened at the end of the route, but the path there still would come across as Byleth having chosen that because of the aforementioned outlook.

Nirvana, on the other hand, reflects Byleth's spiritual state, and the overall messages of the game. It means overcoming attachment, not letting your positive feelings toward something or someone prevent you from doing the right thing. The opposite is true as well, you don't let your own personal aversions or hatreds get in your way as well. It means that when you're presented with information that contradicts your beliefs or even disproves them, you adapt your way of looking at the world in response. Focusing on the self, the more individualistic outlook, can trap people in a cycle of suffering for these reasons. Eastern philosophy focuses more on the good of the group rather than the individual as a result, in addition to knowing your place within society. You are expected to be benevolent to those who you hold power, influence or authority over, while also being dutiful to those above you.

Honestly, how Rhea and Edelgard are presented makes sense on a thematic level. The game tries to make the player adverse to Rhea early on, but she ends up being revealed the good guy with legit reasons for doing what she does. We are supposed to let go of our earlier perception of her as we learn more about the world, and the game puts that at the feet of the player to do so. Edelgard is the opposite, the game tries to make us like her, become attached to her, only to drop info that contradicts her claims in addition to her being the bad guy. And if we let our attachment to her get in the way of making the right choice, we prove that we are unworthy of bearing the title of Nirvana.

But divorcing the game from those themes, like the Western translation does, ultimately screws up the message.

And, you know, I read the translation notes for The Three Body Program, where Ken Liu talks about how translators need to get the point across regardless of cultural barriers. That it's not just about translating the story, but also the mindset of the creators. That the best translation don't make the work sound like it was originally written in English, but rather allow the reader access to the thinking patterns of it's native culture. By trying to make Houses more Western in it's messages, the translators failed their duties.

My Analysis of the Best Paired Endings in 3H (Part 2: Dimitri/Byleth)

Despite the popularity of some of Dimitri's M/M ships, he seemed to be a typical heterosexual man to me. However, his straightness was actually part of what made his character so interesting, ironically. He spent his youth absorbed in masculine activities like hunting, training, and practicing with the sword.

He was willing to TRY and take Sylvain's advice to pick up girls. But he was very inexperienced with women. Chivalry definitely promotes homoromantic social bonding among men. And perhaps because of that very male-dominated culture he grew up in, he deeply yearned for a relationship with a woman.

My Analysis of the Best Paired Endings in 3H (Part 1: Edelgard/Byleth)

Edelgard: I'm simply having trouble putting this feeling into words. I just felt…I don't know. As if something was drawing me to the Ashen Demon. I wonder… Could it be the influence of my Crest?

The story of 3H pushes Byleth with the lord of each route so hard that it almost felt pointless to add the self-insert dating-sim elements with the other students. In Persona 5, you could date whatever girl you wanted with no effect on the main story. But in 3H, it felt more like Final Fantasy X where there the love story was the main story.

This pairing absolutely felt "canon", at least in CF. As both of them bore the Crest of Flames, I strongly suspect that their relationship was meant to represent the concept of "twin flames". A twin flame is a deep soul connection between two people. They are actually thought to be twin souls inhabiting two bodies. Twin flames seem to mirror one another, have shared similar life paths, history, and sometimes trauma. They are naturally drawn to each other. This description certainly applied to Byleth.

Obsessed with characters who portray themselves as worse than they are. Who are lying to everyone including themselves about it. People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look worse. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intend to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they did instead of something that happened to them.

prompt for childhood enemies dimileth!!!

When Byleth was 6 years old, and Jeralt left her in the care of an inkeeper while he was doing merc jobs, a traveling caravan of rich people arrived to the inn, and she heard an ugly rich bowlcut blonde baby say his dad was the strongest and could beat anybody's dad and she choose violence.

Someone had to put the bowlcut in his place and make him understand Jeralt was the strongest.

Dimitri didn't want to fight back for his crest until Byleth called him a wussy... which is a word the mercs used around her and she didn't know what it meant.

(she fondly recalls this story as the first time she won a fight)

(dimitri still has bite scars from the incident and was very scared of girls for a long time)

(gustave was worried sick a commoner kid got the crown prince rabbies)

(they haven't connected the dots)

(This is the same anon who hates Dimitri's hair)

(hello dear dimitri's hair hater anon, i loved this prompt a lot! i changed some little points in the narration, but the main plotis the one you wrote. i really hope you'll like this :3)

wordcount: 1.2k

Byleth was extremely bored. Jeralt no, he said to call him dad Dad went to do some cool mercenary stuff he said were 'too dangerous' for Byleth to attend. How silly! She was perfectly capable of taking care of enemies. She had the best teacher in the world, after all; the Blade Breaker’s abilities were well known along all Fodlan.

Of course, she was still only six, while her father was… How many years old was Jeralt again? She realised she didn’t know exactly. Probably the same age all dads were. Like three-hundred years old or something like that.

Byleth frowned. Did she need to wait three-hundred years to become as powerful as Jeralt? No, it was too far away from now! The little girl stood up. She needed to go training now.

She went out the little inn where Jeralt Dad left her some days ago, heading for that nice spot she found out the day before to train with her new super powerful sword. (Well, wood sword. After the last time Byleth tried to train by herself, she almost chopped her own leg, so Jeralt took precautions by giving her a weapon that 'woudn’t hurt his precious little girl'. How melodramatic! But he chose it precisely for her. It was special. She wasn’t gonna break it!)

Her wandering gaze stopped when she noticed some people a few meters from her. She frowned. A tall guy with dark hair and a younger blonde boy with an ugly bowlcut were talking under a tree, the very tree of her perfect nice training spot.

She frowned again. As people said, Byleth wasn’t… the best at social interactions. She didn’t like talking to people, especially strangers. And she hated when she had to. Like this moment. She needed those two to get out of her new special training spot. She needed to train! To become more powerful! Like, right now!

The urge to train was bigger than her despise for talking to strangers, so she got closer to the tree, holding hard her sword. Byleth repeated in her mind Jeralt— Dad’s lessons about how ‘not to be too scary with other people’. She had to act nice.

“Hi. Get out of my training spot”.

A greeting! Super nice. ‘Good job, me’, she thought, pleased with herself.

The taller boy looked at her with surprise, but his expression quickly changed in a smile. “Hello, you fellow warrior”, he said in a condescending tone, winking.

Ugh. That was one of the thing Byleth hated the most: grown-ups treating her like she was just a little child!

“Get out, I said! I need to train”, she said, pointing at her sword.

Bowlcut boy frowned. “But you’re too young to train by your own!”

“What?!” Byleth exclaimed to him, annoyed.

“Yes! My dad says children shouldn’t fight until they grow up. And you look almost my age! So, you can’t train”, Bowlcut boy explained, nodding.

Byleth crossed her arms. “It doesn’t make sense! My dad helps me train since I was… younger than you!”

Bowlcut boy looked troubled. “Why does you dad train you?”

“Because I want to become strong, and he’s the strongest mercenary of all Fodlan!”, Byleth said with a hint of pride.

Now Bowlcut boy looked annoyed. “That’s not true! My dad is the strongest one! Glenn, tell her!” he added, looking at the taller annoying guy.

Tall-annoying guy was watching at them holding a hand over his mouth as if he wanted to hide it, slightly shaking. Then he proceeded to burst into laughter, hitting the ground with his fist, without saying a thing.

Byleth frowned. What a weird guy.

Bowlcut boy frowned too, but apparently he decided to let the matter drop, as he looked at Byleth again. “My dad is stronger! He has big muscles, and he’s the only one that can use a super uper big powerful spear!” Then he looked down at Tall-annoying guy, who was still on the floor. “Glenn! Tell her!”

The guy tried to stop laughing, but miserably failed. “So… sorry, Dimitri… you’ll have to… deal with her yourself… PUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

Byleth crossed her arms; then, she got an idea. “Let’s settle this with a fight. However wins, has the strongest dad!”

Bowlcut boy’s eyes widened. “N… no! I can’t! I’ll hurt you!”

Byleth was really annoyed now: how dared that little brat imply he could beat her?!

She lifted her sword, pointing at Bowlcut boy. “Prepare yourself!”

“Oh, fuck!” Tall-annoying guy stopped laughing and stood up between them. “Ok, party’s over. Let’s try to get along, shall we?”

Bowlcut boy sighed in relief. Byleth sticked her tongue out, looking at him. “Your dad’s just a… wussy!”

Byleth really liked the word ‘wussy’. The way it sounded was funny. She didn’t exactly know the meaning, but Jeralt’s mercenaries often used it when someone was arguing (usually when drinking that weird ‘grown-ups fruit juice’) with some other of the band, getting the latter very angry. And Byleth wanted to make Bowlcut boy angry.

And she succeded! Bowlcut boy’s eyes widened, and he proceeded to run towards her. Byleth was ready, and promptly dodged the boy. She grabbed his arm, and sinked her teeth in it.

The boy screamed in pain until Tall-annoying boy managed to pull him away. “Shit shit shit! What the hell is wrong with you two?!” he said in a high-pitched tone. Bowlcut boy started crying.

Pathetic’, Byleth thought.

“Okay, little girl, we’re leaving, but promise me you’ll stay away from Dimitri!” Tall-annoying guy said, while taking Bowlcut boy in his arms. “We’re leaving soon anyway, so forget about this and do not tell anyone!” he added, going inside the inn, without waiting for Byleth to respond. “Shit! I did tell Gustave I’m not a good babysitter…” she heard him muttering, while Bowlcut boy was still crying.

She looked at the now closed door for a few seconds more, then turned around. “Okay. Melee training for day: done. I should practice with my sword now…”

“You did what?!” Jeralt—Dad screamed in shock.

Byleth crossed her arms. “I bit him, I told you! He was saying some crap about you!”

Dad looked at her in disbelief, and then bursted into laughter.

Why is everyone laughing at me today?!’

“You… you bit him… you bit the… freaking… AHAHAHAHAHA!” Dad was laughing so hard he didn’t finish the phrase.

Byleth shrugged, deciding to let him be. ‘It’s not like I’m gonna ever see Bowlcut boy again…

15 years later

Byleth didn’t know if she was getting better at reading people, or if Jeralt was acting strange more than usual. Since she told him she chose to lead the Blue Lion House, her father started to make a soft giggle everytime she mentioned the house-leader, Dimitri. It was getting annoying.

“Are you going to tell me why do you make that sound everytime I mention Dimitri, dad?!” she finally said one afternoon, while her and Jeralt were having tea in her room.

Jeralt smiled. “Ah! Never. But maybe, you’ll have your answer if you’ll ever see his arm… Summer is starting, after all…”

Only related to a post I saw but it IS wild that

Things that Dimitri Fire Emblem can rightfully be criticized for:

  • Using excessive violence against his enemies
  • Dedicating a massive amount of his life to revenge
  • Actively seeking death when he’s made promises he needs to be alive to keep
  • Leading people who loved and were loyal to him on what is essentially a suicide mission
  • Being a dick to people trying to help him

(All of which are acknowledged by the story and he changes)

Things Dimitri gets criticized for:

  • Defending his home country against imperialism
  • Some bullshit “status quo” argument
  • Being mentally ill
