Abby Yates Headcanons

Sexuality Edition

(there’s a read more cut because it’s so long omg)

Abby figured out she was a lesbian fairly young though it wasn’t her first identity. Growing up she believed she was romance-repulsed (not necessarily in those terms) and insisted she never wanted to date anybody ever.

This was partly due to the heteronormative narrative that was force-fed to her in everything. It drove her nuts. She didn’t know why for the longest time, but she always asserted it made No Sense and ranted about it whenever it came up.

“Do you have a crush on a boy at school?” an oblivious aunt would ask prompting a 9 year old Abby to launch into a rant about how boys were stupid and kisses were gross and friends were so much better and why didn’t anyone get that?

(not that a 9 year old Abby had any personal experiences with friends, but she was certain friends would play with you and join you on adventures and ride bikes with you to the local cemetery so they had to be way better than gross boyfriends who made you wear make-up and dresses and took you to a school dance.)

Her entire experience with boyfriends at that point was watching her older sister talk on the phone with her friends about whether so-and-so liked so-and-so and getting all protective over some teddy bear holding a heart because a boy had given it to her for Valentine’s Day. Abby found it incredibly annoying – and no, it wasn’t because they shared a room or that she was “too little to understand”.

Somewhere in the 8th grade, a girl turned around in her seat and asked to borrow an eraser. She smiled so prettily when Abby gave her one that Abby’s brain fuzzed over and all she could think was “wow she’s nice”.

It took her the better part of an hour to calm down, and for the next few weeks, if Abby accidentally caught the girl’s gaze, she felt a jolt. It was unnerving but not entirely unpleasant, and Abby started to think that maaaaybe it was the ‘boy’ part of boyfriends she actually had a problem with.

C'mon, get those ideas in to us. :D This means YOU!

Hey, I want to mention something: To our huge surprise, all of the people who’ve told us “here is the thing I’m working on to send to you” are guys. (Everyone whose gender is known, anyway).

On the one hand, we’re happy that there are guys who are excited about publicly showing their support for Ghostbusters 2016!

On the other hand, we’re worried that women and nb people. are second-guessing themselves, concerned that they don’t have enough to say or aren’t qualified to say it or that their art/photos aren’t good enough.

But you are. It’s a fanzine; we want to see your labors of love.

So women, nb people, POC, people from outside the US, everyone: please go ahead and contact us! Email us your submission, or if you’re nervous, PM us and have a chat with us about your idea.

We want you!

💚💚💚💚

UPDATE 1 First submission is in! And it’s a poem! By a woman! Awesome.

UPDATE 2 Anyway hey so we want to make sure that fans of Patty and Abby know that we really want their voices in this zine! @actualsunshinepattytolan @abbygreates @amtrak12 @michonnes @foxteca @othergbships – check the project out and drop us a line if you’re interested! Reblogs (and pointing other people you know who’d be interested at the post) are 💚 too! UPDATE 3 You’ve got about 2 weeks as of today, May 29! If you need an extension let me/ @sweetwinter know and we’ll talk!
