New To You ep310: Do-Gooders pt 2 - White Helmets

___________

White Helmets (documentary)

An Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize - these do-gooders have got the gold, but their story is far from luxurious and peaceful. Jules brings this documentary about a Syrian civil defense force as his pick.

Be wary of the disinformation and conspiracy sites out there touting that this is terrorist linked propaganda. Syria has powerful backers, like Russia, and misinformation and spurious conspiracy theories abound.

There are some powerful moments, like the rescue of an infant from beneath a bombed out building. John is a little bit skeptical- because the film is moving and outside his experiences, so he is wary of being manipulated. This is a work of solid documentary making and the hands of the documentarian are well hidden, the people and events speak literally for themselves.

White Helmets is available on Netflix.

New To You ep250: Tearjerkers pt 3 - The Pillowman

___________

The Pillowman (2003)

This play by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh is John’s pick for a tearjerker this week.

He saw it with Mary when it was playing on Broadway.

The original London cast included David Tennant as the author.

In the American New York production Billy Crudup played the author.

You can find the play online, sometimes copies come up on Amazon. You can watch some production people have uploaded to YouTube. If you’re lucky enough to have a production run near you we would recommend it!

Google Creative Lab challenged us to go big, and we delivered, with four 60 second films for North American’s largest digital LED billboard in New York’s Times Square. We’re not gonna lie, seeing our work illuminate Times Square through 24 million LEDs is pretty awesome. If you’re in New York City this holiday season, go check it out!

You can read about the billboard in the New York Times, or go to androidify.com and get yourself up on that billboard!

If you haven't see me in a while, this campaign is why... I edited this video shot by awesome DP Evan Jake Cohen on his brand new RED Dragon camera. Really impressed with how smoothly premiere handled the 6K footage!

Nevertheless, I wonder whether it is not more important to learn the languages of the future: is it better to learn code or Mandarin? “I don’t think it’s either,” Cowen says. “I think it’s how to understand psychology. To understand marketing. Because the more wealth you have, and the more unequally concentrated it is, the more pressure there is for the attention of people with money.”
