Her brows furrow upon instinct, some spark of anger preparing to flare, but she reigns in the flame. Was he insinuating that she was the best he could do? Why did that make her angry? So badly, she wished to dispute his claim, perhaps as a means of pushing him away when he clearly had no intention of leaving. But, he does the unexpected.
The light in those eyes flicker ever so slightly, but not thanks to the gift in question; no, it was the gesture itself. Confused, her gaze first glided toward him, accompanied by a blink, before resting back upon the offer.

❝A pain, huh…?❞ She muses while reaching for the offered morsel, taking it into hand and seemingly analyzing it. Yep, it’s bread alright. Satisfied, though still self-conscious, she slowly comes to nibble the end. It’s good; she relishes the simple taste. ❝I’m just… surprised, I guess, that anyone would want to hang out with me. I’m… not the nicest person, after all. You know that, don’t you?❞

            “ Yeah. ”          > “ No. ”

He’s as blunt as ever, but his unchanging face conveys the sincerity he’s been tossing her way. Though his tone leaves a lot to be desired—no warmth, no cordiality, nothing. Oh well. It’s casual enough, he thinks. Not quite dismissive yet, despite what his averted eyes might lead her to believe.

“ Haven’t noticed. ” The only reason he’s turned the other way is to take another sip, but this one’s quicker than the last. The look in her eyes, fleeting as it was, wasn’t lost on him, and even he knows not to leave her hanging on another short answer for very long. ( Too bad; Moonkist is one of his favorites. ) “ Bunkichi-san and Mitsuko-san didn’t either. They seemed to like you. ” Now there’s an understatement. Though he remembers being chided for bringing Karin to a bookstore of all places, the old man nevertheless praised him for introducing them to ‘such a nice girl.’ He didn’t think much of his comments at the time—how could he when he was focused on shrugging him and his wife off?—but having heard his classmate’s opinion of herself, he’s starting to wonder how she felt about them... Maybe that’s why he’s glancing back at her with another quizzical look on his face.

“ Am I supposed to think otherwise? Because you haven’t given me a reason to. ”

"Payback, bitch," Cue the sound of his rear being smacked.

Not even the beats blaring in his ears can stifle the SMACK that rings out. Hell, even if they could, it wouldn't change the fact that somebody's very blatantly violating his personal space.

And in a way that's making him jump a little, too!

" Wha— "

Having been struck by her a few times before, he sure doesn't need to turn around to know who's the culprit. No, he can skip right to narrowing his eyes and taking a deep breath. All without turning around to give her the satisfaction of seeing him even a little startled.

" ... Alright. " It's on now.

❝… Why do you want to hang out with me?❞
The question drops amidst the ambient silence. She hadn’t spoken a word until now. Stationed just outside the Iwatodai strip mall, the pair sit at one of the present benches, drinks in hand, though Karin had yet to open hers.
❝Surely, there’s gotta be… better people than me for you to spend time with.❞ Blue hues glide toward him, creating eye contact for the first time this session. There’s disparity behind them, a genuine confusion desperately searching for an answer. ❝So why me?❞

When they lock eyes, he greets her gaze with his trademark reticence. Which would risk making him seem cold and uncaring... if not for the one thing keeping complete silence from hanging over them both. Of all things, something as mundane as him taking a sip from a straw has him looking relaxed. Almost whimsical in a way when paired with his constant blinking at her.

Are there? ” He asks, having finally let his half-empty cup rest on his lap so he can answer her. When he does, his brow arches ever so slightly in a bid to make his question seem that much more honest. “ Better people, I mean. I wouldn’t know. ” As if to prove his point, Makoto brandishes a napkin from within his uniform pocket and opens it to offer her a small piece of bread. Generosity? From him of all people? It’s a good thing they aren’t by bookstore anymore, or else Mitsuko would start cooing over seeing him share her gift.

“ I’m used to asking you, I guess. Anybody else would be a pain. ”

That just would not do. Refusal was something you could work around, being ignored however waas out of the question. Patience began to shorten as you tried your best to grab his attention, purposelly knocking the drink over with your elbow towards your cleavage.

“–Oops guess this bartop is slippery!” You feinged innocence, not minding the stain over your white lingerie like outfit. Your wrapped your arms around your frame, squishing your chest together with a seemingly innocent smile. “Why not make it up to your customer, yeah?
Given how he seemed to be eager to do his job, you decided to use that towards your advanage, using the job to get your way. You leaned over the counter. “Why not have a drink with me, that sounds fair enough to me, don’tcha think?”

         “ Wha—? ”

   > You have a history of being Fearless in situations like these, throwing only quick glances at unruly customers before getting back to work. It’s not like you haven’t dealt with your fair share of spilt drinks either... But this is the first time it’s been done to grab your attention, and damn it, it’s working.

   > Worse, it’s taken you by surprise. Your eyes go wide for only a second, but it’s a second too long. You hope your shaking head and annoyed sigh can throw her off, but the look on her face ( and just her face ) is a little unnerving. Luckily, it’s nothing another bottle can’t cover up. This one’s presented with the same fanfare as the last, ‘thud!’ and all, but a closer look shows that unlike the one from earlier, this is just water with a clean cloth draped over it. Clearly meant for her if your pushing it towards her is anything to go by.

“ ... Fine. But clean yourself up first. ”

   > Good god. You never realized what a pain playing the model bartender could be until just now...
