Have I ever mentioned the weird cryptid (?) encounter I had once

Oke oke So really I hesitate to say it was a cryptid really, because I don’t know WHAT it could have been in general. Here’s the story though. It was really late and me and my mom are driving home from drive out to the pharmacy. Super dark, but we’re going down a street back toward my house. Its kind of woody kind of next to the town. Meaning on one side is a huge river and the park and the other is like a run down abandoned building they still need to fix. I’ll mention I’m in a really rural part of pennsylvania, if that matters. We stop at a stop light and I’m kind of really tired but I look up and down the road and I freeze up. Cause I see this THING I really struggle to describe it because it was very brief, but I saw something huge and black like a shadow just kind of step across the road. I’m not talking walk across the road I’m talking ONE BIG  STEP And of course at first I’m just like ‘oh man I’m really tired I’m seeing things’ cause of course I don’t think much of it, but then I look over and my mom looks absolutely stunned. She turns to me and goes ‘What was THAT?’ We talk about it for a bit, mostly at a loss. My mom thinks it was just a deer sprinting across the road, but I’ve never seen a deer clear a road that fast or jump near high enough to reach what I saw. Because I’m too tired to draw a whole street he’s a general idea of what I think I saw

The chronicle of the monk Herbert of Reichenau for the year 1021 ends “My brother Werner was born on November 1.“

1021 was not an uneventful year. The emperor began a campaign into Italy. Illustrious abbots died. There was an earthquake. But Herbert took the time to note, at the end of the year, that his brother was born.

Of such acts of tenderness is history made.

This post broke through the shell of crustiness on my medievalist heart and made me go ‘aww’.

There was a medieval parenting manual that recommended parents smack pieces of furniture their toddlers bumped into and scold the furniture for being so naughty as to get in the way, so that the kids would laugh and forget about their bumps and bruises

I read that and my heart melted

(source: Medieval Women by Deirdre Jackson. She cited the primary source but I cannot for the life of me find the book to check what it was called)

We should hold a thousandth birthday party for Werner in a couple of years.

HAPPY THOUSANDTH BIRTHDAY WERNER

A Guide To Exploring Gotham At Night

Inspired by this post
  • Don’t.
  • If you insist on it, don’t travel alone, and don’t travel unarmed.
  • If you hear laughter from behind you, do not turn around. Do not attempt to find the source. Simply run and hope they do not get to you.
  • You will see weeds in the cracks of the sidewalks and buildings. If you know what’s good for you, you will leave them be.
  • Avoid walking through Crime Alley. If you can’t, then do not turn around, no matter what you hear. You can’t stop what’s already happened.
  • Do not speak ill of the dead or living. There are ears everywhere.
  • Bats are safe.
  • Owls are not.
  • Trust the street cats only if you have nothing of value on you.
  • If there is a sudden chill in the air, it’s for the best you go home. That chill will only worsen.
  • Always know where your friends are, and keep them close. If you lose sight of them, and they return, ask them to tell you something only known between the two of you. If they answer wrong, run. Do not go looking for your friend. They will be found soon enough.
  • Shadows move across the rooftops. Do not be afraid of them. You are not their target.
  • Some of the shadows might smile at you if you are close enough. Try to smile back. Do not be afraid.
  • If you find an injured shadow, help them as best as you can, or at least return them to their flock. They do more for this city than you know.
  • If for some reason you choose to do harm, do not underestimate any of the shadows. They will not make it easy for you.
  • Do not attempt to approach the smallest shadow. His father has lost too much to trust strangers.
  • Do not follow any rabbits you may see. They are not real. You may not return if you do.
  • If you do return, it will not be of your own will.
  • Do not explore Gotham at night.
  • If you do, do no harm, lest you become the shadow’s newest target.
  • If you do, pray the shadows can save you in time.
