Chapter 22
Of Exes and Jealousy
Olivia paced around her living room biting her bottom lip anxiously while Harry sat on the couch watching her with Olivia’s phone in his hand. “Are you sure you don’t want to call the police?” he asked finally getting a hold of her wrist and stopping her. “This is kidnapping.”
“He’s Charlie’s father, Harry.” She sighed plopping down on the space beside him. “If there’s anyone who’s going to get jailed here, it’s me. I took her away from him- without a choice.”
“He lost all rights of her when he told you to abort her.”
Olivia shook her head remembering Patrick’s voice telling her that he wants the child in her tummy gone. “Not in the eyes of the law.” She whispered sadly looking down on the floor. “He still has the right to fight for custody.”
“Even if he does, you’ll win.”
“We can’t say that. We can’t be sure.”
Patrick watched the little girl in front of him eat ice cream. For the past hour, he had tried to get to know his daughter and as he watched her, he noticed that he may look like her but some of her traits were gotten from her mother. Little Charlotte is much like Olivia in attitude and character; reserved yet open, realistic yet still optimistic. And although she may be just a child and doesn’t have walls as high as her mother does, Patrick saw that his daughter thinks before opening her mouth.
“So, is mommy with someone?”
“With someone?” Charlie asked looking at her father in front of her, her bright blue eyes wide with curiosity yet she knew she couldn’t say anything to anyone about Prince Harry- her mommy made her promise. “She’s always busy.”
Charlie smiled feeling uneasy under her father’s look, “With Uncle Alfred. They work together.”
“So mommy is not dating anyone?”
Charlie giggled not really knowing what dating meant yet but she however couldn’t mention the name of the prince. “Mommy is either working or with me.” She said smiling before taking a spoonful of ice cream to her mouth.
“You must be a handful.” He said and Charlie only looked up at him. The child is mature for her age- absolutely mature. Although he can still see the innocence in her, he saw the independence that Olivia had inside of Charlotte. “Come on, we have to meet mommy.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Harry asked as he helped Olivia put on her coat. If there’s one thing he wanted to do, it’s to punch the prick right at the face for worrying and putting Olivia in distress. “You need support.”
Olivia sighed turning to look at Harry with a slight smile on her face, “I’m a mature woman, I can take care of myself.”
“I just don’t want you like this.”
“I know.” She said before kissing him on the lips. “I’ll be fine. I’ll call you when I get home.”
“I’ll just wait here. Be safe, mon chou.”
Olivia laughed at this, hitting Harry lightly on the arm. “The Duke of Edinburg won’t be so happy on you stealing his term of endearment for the Queen.” She said turning around and walking over to her door, about to go out of the house.
He smiled mischievously, “How about munchkin?”
“Don’t push it, pumpkin.”
Patrick sat on the steps of Westminster Abbey with Charlie who’s busy playing with the stuffed bear he had bought for her and he smiled. The little girl had turned out to be wonderful although sadly he wasn’t with them. She’s well-mannered and very polite. The innocence she has is a breath of fresh air- an innocence that is formed because of him as well. It is absolutely mind boggling to think that such a beautiful human being is formed.
He heard the ever familiar voice of Olivia and he looked up to see her running up the steps, her heels clicking on the stone floor; she didn’t dare look at him nor acknowledge him as she kneeled down in front of their daughter and hugged her. He watched the two and focused on them. The sounds went silent although he can see Charlie showing her mommy the small bear she now owns and had named ‘Cuppy’ and he can see Olivia smiling before kissing the little girl on her forehead. She then looked up at him saying something and he blinked back at her.
“Thank you for keeping her safe.” She said and he can feel the edge on her voice. “I now must get her home.” She continued standing up straight and Charlie promptly taking a hold of her mother’s hand.
“Wait.” Patrick said stopping her from turning around and she looked back at him. “Can we talk?”
Olivia stared at the man before him- the man she used to love and had promised to stay loyal for and wait years for. She couldn’t say that she still feels the same, she doesn’t. Although the memories of how she had loved the same man in front of her haunted her and made it impossible to feel comfortable being around him. “It’s too late to talk.”
Her mouth formed a thin line for a few seconds before sighing, “Not with her.” She said referring to their kid who’s looking at her parents curiously. “Tomorrow. I’ll meet you at The Anglesea Arms. Lunch.”
Harry is not happy to know that Olivia had scheduled a meeting with Patrick Baden as he now paced around Olivia’s bedroom as she sat at the foot of her bed- watching him. “Why did you?” he asked irritably stopping briefly to look at Olivia who only looked back at him emotionless. It’s not that he thinks Olivia is going to do something bad with her ex, no. He knows Olivia completely well, he trusts her. He knows that she and Patrick needed to talk regarding their situation- especially now that he had located them. But the thought of his slimy hands getting to her makes him want to hit something- preferably someone named Patrick Baden.
Olivia knew what’s running inside Harry’s head. The Patrick topic is a rather touchy subject for her- much more for Harry who had found hate in the form of her ex. She knew that he’s partly jealous and worried towards the meeting tomorrow. So she sighed standing up from the bed and walking over to Harry and hugging him from behind, stopping him from pacing and overthinking. “Do you trust me?” she asked, her voice muffled by his bare back.
He sighed touching her intertwined hands on top of his torso. “Of course I do.” They stood there in silence for a few moments until he unlatched her hands and turned to face her. “I’m sorry.” He apologized looking down at her eyes. “I was just-“
Olivia shook her head putting a finger above his lips to stop him, “I understand.” She whispered and her arms snaked to his neck. She smiled up at him seductively making him raise an eyebrow back at her. “What?” she asked pretending to sound innocent.
The mere thought of Olivia actually initiating sex between them turns him on as quick as turning on a light switch. And when she started lowering herself to kneel down in front of him, he can feel himself harden more and more. “Are you trying to bribe me with sex?” he asked, his breath already ragged from the proximity of Olivia’s mouth to his manhood.
She looked up at him and then a sly smile went on her face before she asked, “Do you want me to stop?” while her hands slowly pushed his boxers down- the touch of her warm fingers on his thigh and her hot breath touching his sensitive skin made him groan.
“Oh for God’s sake, woman.” He grunted his hand on the back of her head and pulling on it- his head falling back in pleasure at the process.
Harry stared at the woman beside him. Although he knew that she’s awake and only had her eyes closed to rest for a bit, he couldn’t help but stare at her. The atmosphere in the bedroom is hot from their activities and he embraced it- he can have this every night and every day and he won’t complain. “What’s it like?” he finally said making Olivia peek open an eye to look at him. “Being normal, without the press hounding you. Not needing a PR to defend yourself.”
“I wouldn’t want to compare my life to yours.”
“Come on.” Harry prodded poking Olivia at her side making her smile faintly. “Tell me how you feel.”
“We’re more alike than you think. We experience the same things you do, the only difference is, we don’t have the danger of having ourselves plastered across every newspaper. We’re judged same as you yet not as widespread.” Olivia said looking straight at Harry seriously. “I have aunts and uncles- still alive but had thought of me as dead. They couldn’t take an orphan to their care, too troublesome. Thankfully, my grandmother stood to the role.”
“Oh.” Harry said for he had thought that Olivia didn’t have any other relatives.
“When I got pregnant with Charlie, I had to go back to the Philippines- where they all are. I had no one and I prayed to the Gods that someone would at least help because at that time, I felt so lost.” She whispered her eyes now had a far away look into it but she blinked and smiled apologetically at Harry. “But I got their judgment instead. My pregnancy was spread across the small town I grew up in and the next thing I knew, I was packing my things to go back to the place where I was born. Back to jolly old England.”
“I didn’t have a PR to defend myself from the whispers; but I do have enough courage within myself to ignore them.”
When morning came, Olivia tried her best to not show her anxiousness to Harry especially when he’s watching her like a hawk even though he’s shooting a campaign advertisement for Heads Together with William and Kate. Kate, however, noticed how Harry is watching Olivia intently- or as intently as he can that when she got the free time, she waltzed over to where Olivia stood.
“Hello, Ms. Curtis.” She whispered teasingly making Olivia smile.
The Duchess pouted slightly pretending to engage in an important conversation Olivia. “Open your folder and pretend I’m talking about something important.” She whispered under her breath and Olivia obliged. “So, I can feel the ginge watching you since you came.”
“Well, more intently today.” Kate said noticing Olivia’s unwillingness to answer her inquiry. “Come on. Maybe I can help. Carol told me that she hadn’t talked to you in a while as well.” She continued looking at Olivia’s folder- which is opened in a blank page. “Are you pregnant?”
Olivia almost choked on her own spit but quickly composed herself. “Where did you get that from?”
“Well, your musketeer seems to be too protective.”
The PR finally sighed and gave Kate a glance. “Patrick had picked up Charlie from school yesterday.” She started and Kate gave her a shocked look. “Yes. The ex. Patrick.” Olivia said noticing Kate’s look. “I’m meeting him this afternoon to talk and Harry knew about it.”
“Oh.” Kate said in realization. “Well, you are in a tight knot there. But, me and William are free this afternoon, maybe we can entertain him for a bit.”
“Jesus, we’re treating him like a kid.” Olivia mumbled.
“You do know Harry and his temper, right?” Kate asked and Olivia sent him a confused look. “He can be temperamental. He’s a jealous guy; him and Chelsy fought a lot because of their temper- including his.” She whispered under her breath. “And this Patrick issue is probably eating him up.”
Olivia sighed, “I know. But we hadn’t had a row yet.”
“That’s not very comforting Kate.”
Kate smiled at the PR apologetically. “Look, before you go home after lunch, message me and I’ll try and calm him as much as I can- or at least Wills will try to.” She said and Olivia smiled at her looking up and noticing William gesturing for Kate to come back already. “Although I cannot promise that I can keep him if he said he would want to follow you.”
“Thank you, Kate. I, however, cannot say that I can keep you away from the shoot longer.” Olivia said finally closing her folder and Kate sighed before giving Olivia one last small smile and walking back to William and the crew.
By lunch time, Harry watched Olivia drive away from Kensington Palace slightly annoyed when she declined his offer of going with her- or at least staying in the car. Although he trusted Olivia with everything he has including his reputation, he couldn’t shake of the jealousy raging inside him especially if it involves her first love- the man whom she was supposed to be with. He had accepted that Olivia has a kid and that she couldn’t control her feelings for a man during the times that they haven’t even met yet or had the knowledge that they would even fall for each other however, he couldn’t shake off the feeling that there’s always a chance that she will choose the guy that would be good for her daughter- and that guy will always be the father.
“That’s preposterous.” William said after he had learnt of his brother’s worries and he sent a glance at Kate who’s carrying a sleeping Charlotte in her arms. “You know she’s smarter than that.”
“Precisely Harry. You can’t assume that she will choose Patrick over you.” Kate said agreeing.
“You don’t get it.” Harry said exasperated as he crossed his legs and leaned back on the couch. “I’m a prince. I can never give her a simple quiet life but he can. If she comes back to him, there will be no press to hound her or dig up her past- no complications.”
“Well, he cannot bring back her trust.” Kate said simply “That’s the foundation of every relationship, you know. Trust.”
Yet he also thought of how he had betrayed Olivia once- and how she had forgiven him. She had given him her full trust after Harry had hurt her- what’s stopping her from forgiving a man who’s the father of her only child? Olivia is young- 8 years younger than him and truth be told, she still has her life ahead of her and she can replace him if she wanted to due to the complications he can bring to her and her kid.
“We reckon that you shouldn’t worry, Harry. If she’s talking to Patrick, she will only talk to him about Charlie.” Kate said noticing Harry’s troubled face. “She’s an intelligent woman.”
Patrick Baden sat inside Anglesea Arms just a few miles from Kensington Palace waiting for Olivia to come and when he saw her entering the restaurant, he waved at her making her walk straight towards him. “Work clothes?” he asked referring to her outfit of white fitted button up long sleeve, black pencil skirt that ends a few inches above her knees, and black heels. “You look good.”
Olivia, on the other hand, doesn’t know how to respond to his compliment so she sat down in front of him with a small smile on her face. Now that she’s in front of him, everything that she had rehearsed on the way faded and she was tongue tied. ”What would you want to eat?”
After food had arrived and Patrick had watched the waiter try and hopelessly flirt with Olivia, he watched her intently. “So, what’s up?” he finally blurted out and Olivia gave him a funny look before shrugging her shoulders- “Of course, what a stupid question to ask.”
“I didn’t say that it was a stupid question.”
Patrick smiled, “You’re still such a complicated person to understand.”
“I’m quite easy to understand, you just assumed that I thought of something negative just like how you did before- you assumed that I’m a negative person and that I will be a bad mother.” She retorted back although a smile is still on her face. “What brought you here, really? Surely it’s not to rub to my face that you’re right- as you always were.”
He sighed, clearly, the bitterness of what he had done still haven’t left her. He can see the anger in her eyes although her expression gives nothing away. “I don’t want to fight.” He finally said trying to avoid her wrath. “But if talking about this makes you feel better-“
“What can make me feel better is if you go back to Australia.” She said simply and he had to blink back at the coldness of her voice and her look. “Same as you, I don’t want any complications.”
“Well, you’re very much willing to complicate your life by being involved with Prince Harry.” He retorted back catching Olivia completely off guard. “I know about you and him, Oli.”
“And don’t lie to me.” He said back making Olivia narrow her eyes at the man before her. “I might of not been with you for half a decade but I still do know you well, Olivia. I always will.”
“And haven’t you thought that maybe you’re wrong? People change.” She said and although his declaration that he knew about her and Harry’s relationship scared her, she couldn’t admit to it.
“So you’re saying Camilla Thurlow is wrong?”
Olivia gave out a laugh. “Camilla? You mean Her Royal Highness?” she asked looking incredulously at Patrick who nodded. “She said that I’m dating Harry?”
“How did you-“ Olivia started absolutely shocked that he even had a connection with Camilla Thurlow but she had started piecing together the happenings the past few days- how he suddenly knew where she is and where Charlie is and it dawned unto her. “How?”
“Well, this guy came over to me while I was asking about you to one of the guards at Kensington.” He said nonchalantly as if it’s normal for a stranger to come to him. “And he said he knows someone who can point you to me- then he brought me to Camilla’s estate just outside London.”
“And she said that I’m with the Prince?” she asked looking at Patrick intently. Olivia is a manipulative woman, if she wanted to be; however, she doesn’t want to be manipulative with Patrick although he had manipulated her numerous times when they were still together. Yet, the thought of telling Patrick the truth can be damaging to Harry, to her, and to her kid. “You can’t believe that.”
If Olivia had developed something over the years, it’s her poker face. Patrick couldn’t get anything out of her expressions nor her actions. “Well, I couldn’t believe it at first but she had said various proofs.”
“And you believed a woman going through divorce.”
“I don’t know what to believe, Oli.” Patrick said shaking his head and placing his utensils on the table and looking at the woman he so desperately wants back. “There must be a reason why you don’t want me back.”
“Well, think about what you did to me then because that’s the answer.” She said through gritted teeth while looking at the man in front of him venomously. However, she sighed and rubbed her forehead after a while finding herself wanting to stare at him longer- the usual pull she had when she was still with him. “Look, I had forgiven you but not to the point that I can be with you.”
Olivia scoffed, shaking her head. “I highly doubt there’s salvation after everything you did to me.” She said looking at Patrick straight in the eyes. “I’m working for my kid and being alone works out for me and her.”
“But what about me?” Patrick asked his heart dropping to his stomach at the words leaving Olivia’s mouth. “You’re my family, Olivia. And yes, it took me years to figure that out. Yes, you were right, those friends that I had only wanted me for one thing and that I chose to keep the people that had left me once and abandoned you instead. But why am I denied a chance to make it all right?”
Olivia watched Patrick in front of her; how his mouth opens when he talks, how his blue eyes that used to hypnotize her very much still has a slight effect on her. She used to love the man in front of her, she used to promise that she would stay with him through thick and thin, and she used to think that her happily ever after was with him. However, she remembered all the things he told her, all the judgments, all the pain that he had imposed on her- the depression, the tears, and the abandonment especially during the time that she needed him the most and it made her heart wrench just to think of it.
“Because the thought of you and everything you did still hurts.” Olivia said finally blinking and then she sighed leaning back on her chair. “I can allow you to be involved with Charlie for she is your kid as well but that would be the extent of it. I can’t come back to you. I can’t trust you with myself again but I do trust that you won’t hurt my kid- our kid- in any way.”
For Patrick though, this is enough for him for he knows that he can work for her trust while he tries to get to know her daughter better. He can still have his family. He can still have Olivia and his kid back to him and he will do everything to replace all the tears that he had caused Olivia with smiles.
He’s going to work for his family this time around and no prince will hinder him.
