everyone should attempt an artisan craft at some point in their life because it would cut down the number of comments questioning why handmade goods like ceramics or textile craft or woodworking are so expensive

and this is an unrealistic expectation, but I think the attempt should include seeing through to the end at least one "finished" item, no matter how clumsy or lumpy your first attempts might be. like to me, there's a huge difference in perspective between attempting to learn how to crochet or throw a pot for a few days, acknowledging that it's harder than it looks and giving up, versus committing to finishing that scarf or clay pot you started and working on it for weeks while you painstakingly learn from your mistakes and grow attached to your project while also simultaneously hating it.

once you finish the latter, your perspective changes from "why does this crocheted blanket cost $200" to "holy shit I can't believe they're charging $200 for this crocheted blanket instead of $2000" because you may have known crocheting is hard, you may have easily agreed with the idea that "handmade goods take time and effort" even before attempting a craft, but now you know firsthand the absolute time sink it takes to make things. like yeah dude, that one item took you 2 months to make and probably wasn't even an ultra complex item if it was the first thing you made, now imagine attaching an hourly wage to that time to calculate the cost (and this is ignoring every nuance of the artistic element and master crafters being able to work faster/charge higher because of their years and years of experience)

anyway this rant has been motivated by a comment I saw on someone else's ceramic post asking why a mug was $60 and they understand it's handmade but $60 just seems overpriced, and bro do you know how long ceramics take to make. that mug probably took at minimum 3 weeks between how long it takes to throw the mug, dry partially, trim the mug, dry fully, bisque fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, sand and paint and glaze, glaze fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, take product photography of the mug, write description and list the mug online for sale, im not even including the skill needed to complete all these steps without the mug literally exploding or collapsing while also making it an appealing piece of art, aaaaaaaaaaaaa

my fun fact addendum I'm adding to this is that unlike knitting, crocheting quite literally cannot be replicated by machine, so if you see "mass manufactured" crochet items on retail shelves for retail prices lol. they weren't mass manufactured and someone was underpaid for that

I’m so emotional about dinosaur stuffed animals,,, there are these creatures, extinct long before any of us were alive, but we found their bones and their eggs and their footprints. And we made drawings and models of what they could’ve looked like. And we made them into stuffed animals so we could hold them. We made them soft so we could love them. I’m sobbing

Yeah, we're the animal so preoccupied with petting other animals we're sort of collectively upset there are animals we never get to pet, so we make proxies to snuggle and tell their ghosts we'd have loved them if they were here.

...and tell their ghosts we'd have loved them if they were here.

Hang on i just have to cry for a minute

"if you ship this thing it's because you're too naïve to understand that it's toxic and that you wouldn't like a relationship like this" actually it's because I see one of them as a mentos drop and the other as a bottle of coke zero and I want to watch the mess they'll be together

Shen Qingqiu's internal identity is making me feral

He's caught in Luo Binghe's dream and I'm assuming that reverts him into his true self or how he sees himself internally which is why he appears as Shen Qingqiu

Every fanfic that has Shen Yuan being revealed in his dreams is wrong

Shen Qingqiu is Shen Qingqiu first and foremost

The wholesale rejection of his past self is so deep and ingrained that if someone went searching for his "real" identity the most they'd get is his web ID

Like that is ...familiar and like honestly same hat in a lot of respects but also! People who are mentally stable don't do that!

I know you said your last life was idyllic and trouble free Shen Qingqiu but forgive me for not believing a damn thing your lying ass has to say!

The fact that Shen Yuan felt so alienated in his previous life that he doesn't even identify with it anymore isn't all that surprising!

There were all these studies made about what amount of money actually makes people happy, and the conclusion was that people are generally happy if they have enough money for financial security, but still have goals and things to strive and work towards. People who have so much money that all their conceivable needs and desires are automatically met were, paradoxically, much more miserable.

So the fact that Shen Yuan was a fuerdai who had no ambitions, no goals, and no real struggles other than spewing the occasional vitriolic rant against poor writing paints a fairly bleak image of his previous life. Maybe he was physically comfortable, but man, what a barren existence that must have been.

The fact that he was thrust into a situation where he 1. had to work and struggle against a threat to his life and 2. was given responsibilities and work that he had to keep up with on a daily basis were both things that likely provided more enrichment than anything from his previous life. He really came alive as Shen Qingqiu.

@azzandra you've touched on something here that very few people speak about and it's the fact that, surprisingly, svsss is a self-fulfilling isekai/transmigration story but not for the reasons most people think. it's not because the cool cultivation stuff or the monsters or the romance, though that matters too; it's because as you said, he came alive as sqq. he gained a purpose, he became someone that fought for his family and his loved ones, a teacher loved by all his disciples, etc etc and that was something he couldn't have in his first life. He was even able to get out of the closet and have a happily gay ever after.

You're both so right Whenever he talks about his old life he only describes himself as a "worthless pretty boy" and I find that so telling

But when he's first asked his name as Plant Shen he almost says:

"Ha, ha, this humble one is the untalented Qing Jing Peak Lord of Cang Qiong Mountain, the Xiu Ya Sword, Shen Qingqiu of the Central Plains"

SVSSS Vol 2 p 178

He takes such joy and pride in being Shen Qingqiu and it's such a contrast

Like he enjoys being Plant Shen but he also doesn't want to be him. Not really

God hes so very character isn't he?

Camera falls from a plane and lands in a pig pen.

Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL

If you go through the video frame by frame you can see the outside of the plane.

Then I looked up a list of planes commonly used for skydiving and this was the only one that matched the description of a single-engine, low-wing plane with fixed landing gear and a slight mid-span bend in the wings.

Honestly, respect

This actively happened in my lifetime, and I’m in my 30s. A lot of us experienced it in real time and no one stopped it. No one helped us.

When I was 16 we would hang out outside and inside the library. We ranged from a group of 20 to a group of 3-4 people on any given day, because us 16 year olds also hung out with whatever other kid was around the area. (Mostly younger siblings and then their friends.) We never did anything wrong, never mind illegal. We were never loud in the library and were always polite to the staff. We sometimes got a little loud outside on the street when there was some contest thing going on, but not very often. We mostly hung out and talked about stuff going on in our lives.

Then one day someone called the cops on us.

And the cops showed up all ready angry, then started yelling at us for doing nothing. They couldn’t even come up with a real reason to be there yelling at us, other than to demand to know if we were a ‘gang’. When one of my friends started crying, I turned to tell her that it would be ok. The cop grabbed me, screamed at me to not look away when he was talking to me, then demand I get in the cop car and go down to the station. It took almost an hour for my mother to find out where I was because I didn’t have a cellphone at the time and the cops had just fucking kidnapped me. For comforting a friend while they screamed at us. And you know what happened?

We never hung out like that again. None of us. We all got banned from the library for a year. Again, all of this for literally no reason. They told us we were ‘misbehaving’ for simply hanging around outside being kids. And then we had no where to go. Some of those kids were forced back into their abusive homes. I literally never saw half of them again. Ever. And I lived in that town for several years after that.

So, yeah. They just started kicking us out from the outside years ago and not a single adult or group of adults gave a shit.

"someone who allows you to rest" is the relationship dynamic of all time

A parent that welcomes you back home after things have fallen apart. A best friend whose voice alone who can make you relax. A spouse who convinces you to stay in bed an extra hour and leave the dishes for later. A stranger who sees you tired and gives up their seat on the train. Augh. The humanity of it

Bit telling that for years and years evangelical religious extremists have been allowed on university campuses with their bullhorns and horrific imagery where they harass students into physical altercations and when students complain to the university’s administration they just shrug their shoulders citing freedom of speech but when those same tuition-paying students start protesting against war and genocide they call SWAT
