A quick reminder that it is perfectly okay to still go to your tarot guide in the middle of a reading, no matter how advanced you are in divination. It’s okay, even, to go to more than one guide if you’re not sure that the first one’s description was accurate to the context. Tarot is all about following your intuition and doing what you feel it’s right.

Getting Back Into Your Practice

Sometimes life is shitty and your spiritual practice doesn't take priority. Thats okay. Here are some tips for how to get back into your practice once you're feeling up for it.

  1. Cleanse and Clean Your Space This is defiantly the first think you should focus your energy on. This can take as long as needed and as intensive as you want or feel is needed. Spiritual and physically cleanse your space. Pick up items, open windows and start your cleansing method of choice.
  2. Redo Wards and Protections Once you've cleansed its important to redo your protection. Cleanse to get rid of, protect to keep it away. Even if nothing has *hit* your protections and wards, its important to keep up to date on them being energized.
  3. Keep Actives Low on Spoons Now that you've done the basics, stick to low spoon actives and slowly build from there. Even if you feel super energized and ready to get into it- you want to take things slow. This'll help you from losing steam..
  4. Slowly Add Back In Your Daily Practice This is totally unique person to person, but dont expect to be back into your multi step daily routine right away. Add in each step one at a time, or slowly so you wont feel overwhelmed.
  5. Come Up with a Ritual Youre EXCITED About You want to focus on the parts of witchcraft you love. Do something you've always wanted to try, something you always love doing, or anything that will make you excited for the working.
  6. Pick a New Topic, Not an Older One Getting into your practice and going to an older topic might feel disheartening. Pick a new topic like astrology, plants, or an aspect of witchcraft you havent gotten too into before. Then go back to the older topic you left on.
  7. Do Some Divination on What You Need Right Now Spend time with your spirit team, deities or ancestors and figure out what you should be focusing in on right now. Maybe you need more rest, maybe theres a ritual they want you to work on.
  8. Remember You Dont Have To Do Magic Daily Dont put too much stress into doing something every single day. Take breaks. Youre still a witch.

I hope these helped. Remember to take things slow and dont let the pressure of getting back into it weigh you down. Magic is suppose to help not hinder.

Viking traveler’s amulet, based on the Lillbjärs picture stone. The back reads: “Unharmed Go Forth, Unharmed Return, Unharmed Back Home”, Frigga’s blessing to Odin, possibly from Vafþrúðnismál.

How does this have almost 10,000 notes ?

Because the world is full of trouble and every little bit of help counts.

People tend to forget that we are also animals. We are not separate from nature, we are just as much a part of it as the birds that nest outside our windows.

Take some time today to focus on your place in the natural ecosystem around you. Give an offering to the local nature spirits if you can

Want to make a general offering on your altar, but not sure what to use? Try offering a small portion of whatever you’re eating! A significant chunk of my most meaningful offerings have been things like a torn-off piece of cookie or bread that I baked, a tiny cup of oatmeal, a raspberry with some ricotta, a small cup of tea that I was drinking at bedtime, a small cup of homemade juice, etc.

I like to leave a food item as well as a drink— because to me, leaving an offering feels similar to inviting someone to my dining table— but the food can be as simple as a pinch of whatever you’re eating, and the drink can be as simple as a cup of water or a splash of tea.

Side note: this is how I can tell that hospitality is deeply ingrained in myself and my practice. Even as a young child worshiping the universe at large, the offerings I made were just portions of my own meals; to this day that still feels like my most powerful kind of offering.

GODSTONES - MANANNÁN MAC LIR

Manannán, the "son of the sea," is portrayed in the lore as a trickster figure, a great magician, and a powerful lord of the Otherworld, appearing in such tales as the Voyage of Bran, Cormac's Adventure in the Land of Promise, and the Birth of Mongán. Manannán is also the patron and namesake of the Isle of Man, where he is revered as a wizard and necromancer whose magical mists kept the island hidden from invaders. This is a new art series depicting the Gaelic gods as ancient statues, with designs loosely inspired by historical finds, such as the Boa Island and Tandragee idols from Northern Ireland, and the Ballachulish Figure from Scotland. In this piece, Manannán is pictured with his signature Corrbolg (crane-bag) and shrouded in sea mist.

*grabs you roughly* HEY! YOU KNOW, PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT PATHS AND THAT'S OKAY AND IT DOESN'T INVALIDATE YOUR OWN PATH. *starts shaking you* YOU NEED TO START BEING CONFIDENT! YOUR CRAFT DESERVES THAT CONFIDENCE! IT'S OKAY IF NO ONE ELSE PRACTICES THE SAME WAY AS YOU!

Scrying [Witchcraft 101]

What is Scrying?

I know it looks like a typo and what’s really happening, is that we’ve actually been crying as a community, but alas no; “scrying” is a legitimate and archaic form of divination.

Let’s check out the definition of it via Google:

scryskrʌɪ/ verb
gerund or present participle: scrying
  1. Foretell the future using a crystal ball or other reflective object or surface. “A mirror used for scrying”.

Okay, so Google did pretty well this time and have hit the nail smack on the head with this definition.  Scrying is the act of gazing at a reflective surface and using any symbols that may appear as a way of garnering advice, or foretelling the outcome of certain forthcoming situations, circumstances, and choices.

I saw some old white lady claim that a TV tray with rocks all around it does not in fact constitute an altar. Now. I don't know who the fuck this old white lady is, but consider this a casual reminder that if you decide a fucking TV tray with rocks on it is a fucking altar then it fucking well is.

An altar is personal to the user. If you work and feel at peace at your space then it’s right for you. It doesn’t have to be expensive, full of expensive things, or be permanent. I had a card table that went from study and casual space to altar on holy days.

Your practices don’t need to fit an aesthetic. They need to make you feel comfortable doing them.

So fuck that broad.

Discernment: Let's Chat About It

My takes are below. Would love to hear more :)

Discernment, to discern = perceiving or recognizing something

Discernment is often presented or implied to be a magical or spiritual skill which allows a magical practitioner to accurately sense and interpret spirits/energies/gods/etc.

But is it?

Discernment is a mundane skill.

For me, the most important concept of discernment is that it's not inherently magical.

Discernment itself is literally just, "ah, I have perceived something." Have you ever played that little game where you look at two similar pictures and find the differences between them? That's an exercise in discernment - developing the ability to recognize what is present or not present.

In the witchblr, discernment usually automatically means discerning something spiritual. This is done through the faculty of psychic senses. Psychism provides sensory input. But just like my eyes can look at the picture game and fail to discern differences, I can be receiving psychic input and fail to discern it.

I don't think just having psychic senses is automatically "discernment."

The other day I was doing a reading for a friend. I tapped in to an intensely emotional thread of energy. I felt totally consumed by this emotion - and I also had no idea why it was happening, where it came from, or what was going on.

I would not have been able to detect this emotional energy unless I had psychic senses.

But at the same time, I totally failed to discern what was going on and what was happening to me. I wasn't able to recognize what was going on; I had no insight into the situation.

I think when people talk about discernment, they are talking about an intersection of both having psychic skills, AND being able to to interpret psychic input accurately.

As another example, over the years I have met amazing psychics and mediums with incredible natural talent. In one situation, a person I knew with spectacular raw skill was conversing with a malicious spirit. This spirit had shown, in my opinion, many obvious signs that they were malevolent. However, the psychic believed that the spirit was their true guide; they were unable to discern any malicious intent.

When I sought out the counsel of a friend with limited psychic skills, but a lot of discernment, that friend was able to immediately point out all the ways this spirit was presenting as malicious.

(If I have known you in the past and you think this might be about you: this exact scenario has happened to me like 10 times so there is a good chance it is not).

The psychic skills part of discernment is something you have to practice & build up to get better at it.

The good news is that you can practice to get better at it. It's under your direct control: if you have the time and energy, significant progress can be made in a relatively short amount of time (I'm talking months, not hours my friends).

There are a great deal of exercises and undertakings you can do to develop psychic senses. There are a heck of a lot of books out there that teach people to tap in to their natural psychism.

Almost all exercises which seek to engage with, feel, and understand energy and spirits will develop this center. I wrote this post about how to start communication if you don't feel like leaving Tumblr.

Resources include:

  • The Complete Guide to Psychic Development by Cassandra Eason
  • Psychic Witch by Mat Auryn
  • Inner Temple of Witchcraft by Christopher Penczak

IMO, a large part of the 'wisdom & application' part of discernment is only going to come through personal development & experience.

This personal development can come through stuff like reading and talking to people doing the kind of work you want to do. IME a very great help is to develop a relationship with a helper spirit who will be able to act as a mentor and guide. But I also think its something that just gets better as you try to become a discerning person.

I don't know if it's as easy to just practice being wise (as one can practice a psychic game). Detecting energies in the moment doesn't necessarily tell you if, in a complex situation, they will end up being good or bad six months down the line. I don't know if I'm over-complicating this aspect, but I do feel as if its something that takes longer to develop.

I do think interpreting information, and then knowing the best course of action once an interpretation is made, is different from being able to gather information. I think that "discernment," as we talk about it in the blr, rests at the intersection between knowledge and wisdom.

I think a majority of people who are confused about discernment and don't know 'where to start' should try studying & developing personal psychism. These "extra senses" are how we gain input from otherworlds.

But I also don't think it's right to promote discernment as purely being about psychic sensing. I think we have to accept that people with psychism can be confused, mislead, or manipulated just like everyone else.
