People in private bookclub discords... You literally have the opportunity to do something SO FUCKING FUNNY and heartwarming for your favorite authors.

Like could you IMAGINE how much joy you'd bring them if you ALL COMMENTED AT ONCE

Do you even realize how much that would BLOW THEIR FUCKING MINDS?!

someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic

I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS

I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?

the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"

this is directly related to this post I made about how fanfic authors now are treated like content mills, and not like valued members of a creative community who thrive on interaction. for the past decade, we've watched the fandom ecosystem disrupted over and over, as NSFW fan artists seek safety by putting their work behind paywalls, and self-conscious fic readers squirrel away their feelings in invite-only communities

an easy way to do your part to fight against the evils perpetrated by social media is to leave a comment on a fanfic you love

but don't take my word for it -- here are some responses that my fellow authors have left on this post:

The fact I had a fic that was fairly beloved and NO ONE commented on it because it was all being done in a fucking book club server made me want to scream.

I haven't updated that fic in two years now.

I cannot express enough how imperative it is to show the writer how much you love their work. The comments don't have to be novels themselves - even just an "I loved this so much!" Or keyboard smashing works wonders to keep the writer going. Please, we need to bring back supporting writers and artists now more than ever!!!

As a writer, I love going back through the comments I've gotten on AO3. I promise that the minute you take of your time has been appreciated for hours/months/years

*SIGHS*

Another AO3 app that's pretending to be official when it's not (or at least isn't making it clear its unofficial.) They're using AO3's name and logo, and embedding ads.

There is no official AO3 app

Someone else is gathering your data, potentially your log in information etc and making use of it how they please. (They say they're not but their privacy policy says otherwise)

They are making money from the ads without the fic writer's consent.

They've also rated it Pegi 3 (which is ludicrous)

Please, even if you care about nothing else, for the safety of your data, please don't use this app. Certainly don't give it your AO3 log in details.

I've told AO3 that it's infringing on its copyright. I will be requesting they remove access of my work as I do not consent to my creative content being used to generate ad revenue for them.

I will be reporting it as incorrectly rated.

The only email address I can find is Narusta@gmail.com which is included in their privacy policy, and boboxway13@gmail.com as their developer.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

  • summary: Bruce
  • summary: "Bruce Banner"
  • summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

Meme + helpful search tutorial ftw!! Also saving the tags, because AO3 volunteers are indeed awesome:

Today's snippet (4/25/24)

On the way to the infirmary, Kara tried to keep Genbu distracted. After her session with J’onn, the newbie seemed a little unsteady on her feet even before Kara scooped her into a bridal carry, with all of Genbu’s comfort items piled onto her lap like she was a living sling. Her heartbeat didn’t pick up too much, though, so Kara figured she didn’t mind that much.

And so, Kara decided to ask some pressing questions.

“Thoughts on Luthor?”

“He should be in prison. But he didn’t do anything in a non-extradition country.”

“And about the Ultimen?”

“The who?”

“Not important.” Kara did a loop around Fire in her transformed state, dodging without so much as losing speed even on the turn. As she righted them both, Kara asked. “Anyway, pineapple on pizza?”

I call upon the fan fic writing gods to bless you with the perseverance to finish one of your unfinished drafts.

May your fingers dance along the letters upon your device with ease, may the devil of distraction stay far from you, and may your work not need much editing.

I pass this blessing upon every fan fic writer out there.

As it came to me I give it to you.

As Beta was kind enough to inform me (while laughing), the fact that other POV characters in Exorcising and Exercising Demons think of Kei as “the magician” is really incongruous with how she acts overall. Because in every other story, Kei leans into the Fighter or Rogue archetypes and doesn’t reveal more powers if she thinks she doesn’t have to, and certainly tries to avoid explaining anything to anybody ever. In case she has to fight or avoid them later.

But the first time the DC characters see her, it’s when she’s casting a barrier “spell” with blood as a medium and after having attacked people with her “ocean spirit” mind roommate’s powers.

Yeah, the “whoops all magic” thing was a strong first impression.

(a little blurb for you after reading the latest B-Plot)

Bruce comes back from the Watchtower and just pauses when he sees Kei. He opens his mouth, closes it again, stares for a brief moment.

Kei pulls the blanket into a tighter burrito. "I don't wanna talk about it."

Bruce just nods and leaves. No need to bring up Chronos. Even if he is curious about future Genbu's blatant show of power and whether current Genbu has that same potential for that level of blitzkrieg destruction (and may or may not have already considered contingency plans to file away as Just In Case....)

Yeah he's not really up for that conversation right now either. Possibly never.

Bruce does not want to touch time travel with a ten-foot pole, and he wasn't even around the last time the League accidentally rewrote bits of history and didn't tell anyone. I mean, he was, but between the big Nazis-lose-the-war-again retcon to get reality back into vaguely recognizable shape, and the time Superman got chucked into an apocalyptic future by Toymaker, he understandably does not want more repeats. And acting on a prophecy is often one of the best ways to fulfill it out of ignorance.

So he'll probably blackbox it for later consideration. It's not like Genbu has an automatic off-switch like Clark does.

If Kei was a mech pilot, what kind of mech would she pilot?

(Due to Isobu, I always imagine she has a SEKHMET copilot or similar in her theoretical mech)

Avatar

I don't usually watch mecha-heavy shows, but I'd think Kei's mech arrangement would be...probably a cross between Pacific Rim and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Like, yes, horrible possibilities, but EVAs are made of eldritch abomination bits and synchronize with their pilots, and Jaegers require teamwork to a frankly psychic degree to get much of anything done while fighting giant monsters.

(the mech should be shaped like a turtle.)

But basically Kei's gonna have a bad time. As is true to the majority of the classic mecha genre. :)

Something entirely silly that would never have fit into the tone of the last thing I wrote:

Terry’s version of the Batsuit has retractable claws. He uses them to punch through concrete and so on during city navigation. They’re not a combat option most of the time due to the rating of the DCAU, but they exist!

Kei, if she was slightly less freaked out by the time travel situation:

[image description: a gif of Anya from Spy X Family, literally starry-eyed with excitement. end description]

It’s one of the few things Kei doesn’t get from her jinchūriki transformation, because Isobu has completely blunt fingers.

She can make them out of chakra on purpose, but it’s not the saaaame.
