controversial take: if you haven’t read the book you’re not allowed to criticize the opinions of someone who has. if you’re going to criticize someone for thinking richie is bi when you think he’s so “obviously” gay, read the book. the book is the source material. it is canon that he’s attracted to women. you can headcanon him as gay all you want but don’t go to someone who has actually consumed each version of the media and tell them their interpretation is wrong. bi!richie has existed for 30 years. gay richie has existed for a month. but BOTH EXIST.

the discourse about richies sexuality is stupid. bi and gay richie are valid. telling others their interpretation is WRONG is just being an asshole

do y’all ever think about eddie getting SUPER defensive over the fact that he and his wife don’t have kids? especially when asked if he’s TRIED to have kids? that to eddie is like someone asking him flat out if he even has sex with his wife. no other Loser has this kind of reaction. a man who is attracted to women would not automatically become defensive like this. this is the response of a man who already beats himself up for not being able to get his wife pregnant, who already deals with this question - this question that comes with the implication that eddie can’t perform. he works in a male dominated industry and he is a man who has been bullied for being gay his entire life. this is not the first time eddie has dealt with this question. but from his friends? these people that already know him too well? all this time and he still hasn’t convinced them he’s straight? and then when richie is the one who tries to calm him down he uses their Thing against him.

he wants to make sure everyone at the table knows HE is not the reason they don’t have kids. there is a very reasonable explanation for why they don’t have kids and it has nothing to do with his own ability to perform, regardless what anyone else has said about it.

and you could argue that it’s just because he was bullied! totally! so why does he lose his shit when RICHIE tries to soothe him about this very specific subject? why does he take “don’t call me eds,” something they use in a playful and loving and sometimes flirty way and make it bad? make it harsh? make it mean? is it because richie is some kind of symbol for eddie? the representation of his feelings for men, the first boy he liked, the man he’s seeing again and who is probably bringing up all those feelings that he’s been trying to push down, reminding him what love ACTUALLY feels like and that it’s not the way he feels about his wife, who’s just trying to make him feel better and calm him down but that’s the problem! another man SHOULDNT be the one to soothe him! he refuses to let anyone know richie affects him!

so he goes for the jugular. the ‘eds’ exchange is so meaningful to them that it’s one of the last things eddie says before he dies. richie calling him eds and eddie saying “don’t call me eds” is their “i love you” and that scares eddie so much in that moment, that richie is saying “i love you” so loudly and in front of these people who he NEEDS to think he’s straight - that’s terrifying. that’s not okay. maybe it’s not a big deal to richie, who is actually attracted to women and doesn’t have this issue hanging over his head, to say “i love you” so openly. but eddie can’t say “i love you” back, it would give too much away, it would ruin what he’s trying to do, so he has to say “i hate you” instead. and so to say “i hate you”, even though he doesn’t mean it, he takes their special thing and he throws it in richie’s face.
