“We thought he was there to help us. I tried to help them but I couldn’t. I was too weak. When he left, I played dead. Hid with the bodies. Felt them go cold. They were the only family I knew, and he slaughtered them.”

Sonoran Bumble Bee - Bombus sonorus

Often treated as a subspecies of Bombus pensylvanicus, though recognized also as a full species, the Sonoran Bumble Bee, Bombus sonorus (Apidae), is distinguished because the dorsum of the thorax is yellow posteriorly and there is a distinct black interalar band, whereas in typical B. pensylvanicus the dorsum of the thorax is largely or entirely black posteriorly.

Distributed in Texas, west to California, into Mexico, this is the common bumble bee of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts.
