┅ I've got plans.

Darcy had done it again. With six dozen cookies, four dozen muffins, and probably ten pounds of fudge, she was stuck with a dilemma. Try and eat it all herself? Nah, that’d be insane, she’d die for sure. So the other option was to make baskets and send them off to others of random choice until she ran out of goodie baskets.
So she did just that. She separated and gathered the treats into baggies that then went into baskets she had bought last time she was out in the city at a hobby store. Once that chore was complete, she packed them all up in a duffel bag and began her walk through the town dropping off basket after basket.
When she made it to her final doorstep, no more baskets in her bag, she set it down neatly, fluffing the ribbon before standing up and nodding at her cute little display. She knocked on the door to signal there was a package delivered, and then turned around to walk away. Happy with her deed of the day.

Samuel had just gotten in from his long work day, so he was already at the door, jacket still on, when he heard the knock. It wasn’t an odd thing for neighbours to call on him throughout the day -- he figured someone was just looking for a friendly face, although he wasn’t quite sure why he’d be their first choice, considering there were friendlier faces just a few yards away.

He was, however, shocked to see one of those friendly faces, turning as though she were walking away, when he opened the door. “Wait!” He took notice of the basket of goods sitting at his feet, and held up a hand, signalling for Darcy to stop retreating. He’d been delivered baskets like these before, but never got a chance to thank the individual responsible. Though a small thing, he always appreciated the little gifts on his doorstep -- anything that took him out of the dull day-to-day of the valley made his life that much easier to endure.

“If you don’t have more of these to deliver, let me thank you.” He wasn’t one to reach out, but he figured she’d made enough kind gestures that he owed her some in return. “Do you like tea? I just made some, if you want to come in.”

“People say when you start working out in the field as a nurse officially, you’ll be less afraid. I’ve worked as a nurse now for at least a few months and I’m still scared to death of making a mistake. So to whoever said that, you’re absolutely full of shit. Times like this are when you need tequila and a lime.”

“I’m not trying to support the habit, but I’ve heard that alcohol makes your hands more steady. So would you rather have hands or a brain?” Samuel posed the question, pausing for thought. “I’ll just remember to ask for a different nurse next time I’m in.”

Penelope had been inspecting some new items before setting them out on the counter for this week’s sale when she noticed someone reaching for a jar of peppermints, precariously balancing them. Her heart clenched in her chest, noticing as it wobbled, then quickly rushed to help, hoping to avoid another shattered glass jar on her watch this week.
“Oh! Let me help you with that!” she said, quickly rushing over and helping them balance the enormous jar and breathing a sigh of relief.

Samuel had been absent-mindedly skimming the candies on the shelf - in part browsing, but mostly killing time. He was pulled out of his daydream, however, when his hand nicked a jar of peppermints and nearly knocked it off the shelf. “Shit,” he breathed, a hand barely stabilizing the jar before the girl took over. “Guess this is what I get for trying to branch out,” he joked, turning towards Penelope. He was relieved to see one of the other workers wasn’t a witness to his clumsiness -- it was only her. “I wanted some candy to keep on the coffee table. You know, for guests -- that makes me sound old, doesn’t it?” He continued, comfortably spilling his thoughts. “I’ll just take the usual.”

“you can come in!” riley smiled warmly. he pulled the door open, happily ignoring the closed sign hanging against the glass. there was always room for one more friendly face. he hadn’t quite finished clearing up anyway, a mop set against the wall and music playing softly in the background.
the boy welcomed them into the little ice cream parlour with a smile and hopped over the counter. “what can i get for you today? the usual? or do you want to branch out and try something interesting? we have caramel balsamic swirl in new this week, if you like caramel i’d totally recommend you try a scoop.” he wiggled his eyebrows and grabbed an ice cream scoop. “how’s your week going? did you see the strawberries back in stock at the market? best day of my life, i can tell ya.”

his personal plan to celebrate the first day of spring with a scoop of ice cream was enough to keep samuel going through his long, dull shift at the mart. of course, the first day of spring also brought in new shipments, meaning that samuel had been asked to stay late -- once again -- to help re-organize. he’d almost turned it down this time. but as always, the promise of overtime was too sweet to resist, so he’d been banking on the possibility of getting to buddy’s just in time to grab a late scoop. he couldn’t hide his disappointment when he saw the closed sign turned over, but the feeling immediately vanished when he saw the friendly face behind it.

“sorry, man -- I hate to be that guy,” samuel said sincerely, knowing all too well what it felt like to be minutes from close only to have a single customer extend his time at work. still, he slipped in the door anyway, pulling it shut behind him. “but since you mention it, I’d love a scoop of that. waffle cone.” he smiled, hoping riley didn’t mind the interruption too much. “oh, it’s been -- a week. definitely needed an ice cream fix tonight. I saw. exactly why this is my favorite season,” samuel replied, pushing back the thought that strawberries were the most exciting thing in his life -- and how depressing that was. “I wish I’d had time to stop there, too, but I figured this was more important. hoping they’re not sold out tomorrow.”
