I guess it’s not bad, but you just have to be careful for spreading yourself out too thin. Gotta’ think about yourself, too. ’

My husband takes care of me,she says. He has his flaws but-- oh, there’s no denying Bash McCarthy doesn’t put his all into protecting her. ‘ So I don’t have to feel guilty about caring more for others.

the champion manages no words, a grip upon her throat like a vice – instead, shifting the younger woman in her arms so that the stranger could have access to wounded sister. bethany’s breathing comes in rasps, gurgled through the blood in her chest – anything, she thinks, fingers gripping bone-pale into bethany’s shoulders to right her, anything to help her. you have no enemy in me. she is a mage – but magic cannot defend against everything… proven very smartly by the pallor of sickened skin. please...

No, she says, very softly. ‘ But it can heal better than it protects. Peggy takes a moment to look the younger woman over, and she winces. This isn’t good-- not that it takes all too much of a healer to be able to point that out. She glances to the blonde and looks almost sorry Some of these wounds... I don’t think I can help. I’ll try but-- all of my supplies are in Skyhold and I don’t think she would survive the trip. But maybe if-- Down the road, there’s a big bush with a plant, it has red leaves, a yellow centre. If you could get me some of that, it might help.

this entire thing is a mess. see, this is his day to day. fight the bad guys and go home. all the people in his life can take care of themselves, who cares, right? his enemies can go after the people close to him all they like – until now. not peggy. not her. anyone but her.   i’ll find a way.  it hurts as he tries to stand to his feet. people are still trying to come at them – put them down for good. he can’t tell who they are, he’s focused on peggy and no one else. he’s got to get her out of here.

as he tries to get up, he makes himself a barrier over her. he can more of a beating than she can, just in case.   we’ll get away from them. i always do. you’ve got to trust me.  he groans and grits his teeth as he moves, it hurts and he’s having a hard time.  i’m going to lift you up and it’s going to hurt. brace yourself.

      Okay-- ’

She trusts him. Whatever this mess is, Peggy doesn’t blame him for it, not in the slightest, and she trusts him to be able to get them both out of it. Of course, even with his warning, she isn’t even remotely prepared for the pain that shoots through her when he picks her up. It’s enough to make her cry out, even though she feels so very badly about doing so. Doesn’t want to make him worry or feel bad for hurting her, you see.

Of course, every thought along that line goes promptly out of the window when he starts to move and the pain only gets worse, more intense.

No, no-- no, no, no, stop-- Please, I can’t--

She’s hurt. Really badly, she thinks, but she doesn’t want to worry him, tries not to show the pain. It’s lucky he’s not looking at her, honestly, because she’s bad at it, showing everything she’s feeling clear as day. It hurts too much to push away, you see, even though there’s absolutely nothing she’d love to do more.

Peggy isn’t cut out for this. Every fibre of her being is telling her to just give up but she won’t. Mostly for Pietro’s sake. She might be of some use to him still, she supposes. Even if they’re up against-- well, she doesn’t know what they’re up against. Mutants, she supposes. She’s starting to understand why some people might be scared of them.

She tries to sit up but she can’t. She’ll have to settle for holding onto his arm and hoping he comes up with some genius plan. Oh, god. She doesn’t want to die.

How do we get out of here? How do we get away from them? Can we?
