Mo Dao Zu Shi Adaptations Available in English

As hopefully everyone reading my Restless Rewatch series knows, The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling) is a live action adaptation of Mo Dao Zu Shi, aka The Grandmaster of Diabolism, by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. If you love the Untamed, it’s worth your time to seek out the original novel and at least a couple of its many adaptations. This post has links for all of the iterations I’m aware of.

Each adaptation differs somewhat from the original novel, with CQL being the most divergent. This doesn’t bother me, because I view all adaptations as AUs, and I like to look at each work as a discrete entity when I’m inhaling experiencing it. There should never be a time, in an adaptation, where it only makes sense if you’re already familiar with the source material. That said, knowledge of the source material can deepen the experience of watching or reading an adaptation.

If you are starting with the Untamed, the tone of the novel, particularly in the romantic/sexual interactions, may surprise you. The live-action really emphasizes the tenderness and yearning in WangXian’s relationship. That’s there in the novel, too, but the novel gives us a much more lusty and outrageous pair of lovers, and there are several moments that lean into the innate hilarity of sex. 

On the flip side, the horror elements and moral quandaries in the novel are stronger and darker than in the live action: Wei Wuxian is crueller, the zombies are deader, and Jiang Cheng is not a secret cinnamon roll on the inside. It’s truly a wonderful book and I encourage you to view it as its own distinct work (as much as your brain allows) while reading it.

The Novel

The novel has been translated into English a couple of times (and into many, many other languages, as shown in these cover images). 

You can buy the official English translation from Seven Seas Entertainment at this link. Volumes 1 and 2 are available so far, with 3 and 4 to be released later. Be aware there are some issues with the translation, which you can search up on twitter or here on tumblr.

The Manhua

The Manhua’s been getting a lot of play on Tumblr recently because the latest chapters have had SO much good stuff in them, but the whole thing is great. You can read most of it at https://modaozushimanhua.com/, as well as other places around the net. However there are some chapters in the 170s that are, on most of the sites, kinda janky. Fortunately there are nice clean translated versions of chapters 165 through 180 at https://d00rknb.tumblr.com/mdzs-manhua.

But! Maybe Wangji is finally starting to move on? Even if his bad taste persists, this one is at least more manageable. How fortuitous that your stubborn, obsessive brother should finally find a new yeah no that's Wei Wuxian, isn't it?

It's just Wei Wuxian again.

"What a wonderful day! The sun is shining, Wangji is happy, I'm off to visit A-Yao, life is good," thought Lan Xichen, days before the plot would hit him with a sledgehammer

I can’t shake the feeling that Hua Cheng must’ve been so overwhelmed seeing the version of Dianxia he met on that ox cart. Like he would trust, support, and love even the darkest version of Xie Lian imaginable, but the one he ended up meeting, after everything, was gentle, sweet, adorable, delightfully silly, honest, and unguarded, ready to protect the old man driving the ox cart and share his steamed bun with a stranger.

Scenes from many gut-wrenching moments probably flashed before his eyes, yet here was his Dianxia, within reach. And they were just having a chat—not as a redacted and his redacted—just two people on a chance encounter on a beautiful autumn day. Hua Cheng’s heart must’ve felt so full that it was about to burst.

At the same time, he probably wanted so much more than having a casual conversation about the water tyrant. Imagine the amount of self-restraint he had to not just blurt out “where have you been??” “How have you been??” “Give me a list of people and creatures who have ever mistreated you in any way in the past 800 years…”
