Riddle Time Part Two
Pairing- Edward Nygma x reader
A/N- part two is here!! this started to get a little long, so I decided to split it into another part. so expect one more part coming soon!
Ed stared at Y/N with wide eyes, his heart aching at the fact that she hadn’t called him Ed. He blinked and stood up, trying to gain his composure. However, he was still unable to stop the small break in his voice as he said, “You’re here.”
Y/N just nodded. “Yeah, I’m here. Don’t get your panties in a twist,” Y/N told him.
Ed couldn’t contain the smile that instantly broke out on his face and he chuckled softly. She was still the same old Y/N.
“Lee here thinks you can win my game,” Ed stated. Y/N rose an eyebrow, “And you don’t?”
Ed went to answer, but they both knew that there was no use denying it. There was a highly likable chance of Y/N winning this game and Ed mentally cursed Lee for bringing the one person that was probably as good at riddles as him.
Ed stared at Y/N for a minute, an amused smile on his face. “Why’d you come, Y/N?” He asked. “I’m not here for you, if that’s what you think. I’m here for Lee,” Y/N said.
The two were silent as Y/N began walking up to the stage. She was just about to pass by him when Ed whispered out in a soft voice, “There’s no other reason.”
Y/N froze and that’s when Ed saw it. The small flicker of pain and hurt that flashed over her eyes. She turned her head and their eyes locked. Their faces were mere inches apart and anyone in the room could see that there was some obvious sexual tension between the two.
Ed couldn’t stop his eyes from flickering down to her lips, the same lips he had kissed hundreds of times, the same lips that seemed to be taunting him at that very moment. Y/N’s eyes flickered over Ed’s face before she shook her head ever so slightly.
“No other reason,” she told him and with that, she flicked her hair over her shoulder and walked over to Lee.
Ed smiled as he watched her walk away. Sure, she had basically just told him that she wasn’t here because of him, but her eyes told another story.
And that just made the game a lot more interesting.
Y/N walked over to Lee who was looking at her with her eyebrows raised and a smirk on her face. “No other reason, huh?” Lee asked. “Oh, shut up,” Y/N told her. Lee smiled and put a hand on Y/N’s shoulder. “Thanks for doing this. You’re a great friend, you know?” Lee told her. Y/N smiled and flipped her hair back in a dramatic way. “Oh, I know,” she said and the two girls laughed.
“I’m going to go ahead and get off the stage. Good luck,” Lee said before giving the girl a small smile and walking away. Y/N stood there for a minute and took in a deep breath before she went behind the small podium and turned to face the crowd. Ed looked back to make sure Y/N was ready before turning to the audience.
“Ladies and gentlemen, a gauntlet has been laid at the Riddler’s feet,” Ed called out. “It seems not only our leader, but the lovely Y/N L/N also thinks that she knows what’s good for you.” Y/N rolled her eyes and Ed smirked at her response. “She thinks stapling a live barracuda to someone’s face isn’t damn good entertainment,” Ed told the audience.
“Unless that face is yours then no it’s not,” Y/N told him. The crowd started laughing while Ed threw Y/N a glare in her direction. Y/N only smiled sweetly and it took every ounce of Ed not to smile back. “Just get on with the show, Riddler. Or are you stalling cause you know you’re about to lose?” Y/N taunted.
Ed smirked at the girl. “Just giving you enough time to back down while you still can, sweetheart,” Ed said.
“Not happening, green bean,” Y/N told him with a smile. Ed smiled back and the two stared at each other for a minute before Ed quickly cleared his throat and turned away.
“What time is it?” Ed called out. “Riddle time!” the crowd yelled. “What time is it?” Ed asked again. “Riddle time!” Ed smiled and turned around.
“Lila,” he called out to his assistant as he walked over to the giant glowing question mark. He grabbed his hat from where he had left it and glanced at Y/N before saying, “Prepare the timer.”
He swiftly turned around and walked to the front of the stage. Y/N watched in amusement as Ed walked to the front of the stage and got serious.
He slowly brought his hat up and placed it on his head before saying, “I can be broken without being held. Given and then taken away. Some people use me to deceive, but when delivered, I am the greatest gift of all.” He quickly turned and pointed at Y/N. “What am I?”
Y/N hadn’t even used up ten of her seconds before she knew the answer. However, Y/N wanted to make a show of this, so she pretended to be thinking long and hard.
Ed smirked and walked over to her. “Do my eyes deceive me or is the one and only Y/N stumped?” Ed asked. Y/N looked over at him and shrugged. “Of course I am. You are the Riddler after all and without you around, I’m not exactly solving riddles everyday. I’m out of my game,” Y/N said.
That was a lie. She loved solving riddles. It had been something that Ed had introduced each other and the two used to solve riddles all of the time. Just because the two broke up, doesn’t mean that she stopped solving riddles.
But Ed didn’t need to know that.
Ed hesitated for a moment as his eyes stared at her. “So you give up?” Ed asked.
Y/N’s eyes landed on Lee who was amongst the people in the crowd. Lee gave her a confused look and mouthed, “What are you doing?” Y/N just ignored her and turned back to Ed.
Ed stared at her in curiosity and took a step closer so that he was now standing next to her. He leaned against the podium and asked, “Do tell how you’re going to solve this then.”
Y/N smiled and leaned in. Her smile grew when she saw how tense Ed became because of the close proximity. “You’re going to tell me,” she whispered and Ed blinked in shock. He raised an eyebrow in amusement. “Really?” He asked. “How’s that?”
“You might not be willing to admit it, but deep down, you want to. You know me, Riddler. You used to love me once and maybe, deep down, you still do. You don’t want to see me harmed and you would do anything to prevent if. Even if it meant shutting your little game show down,” Y/N said. Ed jumped back abruptly, his face one of shock and hurt.
“So that’s your plan?” He asked, his voice raising slightly. “To appeal to the inner Ed. Your Ed. Well, you played the wrong hand, Y/N. That Ed is gone and there isn’t a single cell in my body that can even stand the idea of loving you.”
Y/N flinched slightly at those last words and Ed’s face fell for a split second before he was back to his usual cold exterior. “You’re lying,” Y/N tried to say, but Ed shook his head.
“I’m not lying. You’re the only one that lies here!” Ed exclaimed. Y/N rolled her eyes. “Really? You’re going to bring this up again? I didn’t lie!” Y/N yelled back.
“Yes, you did!” Ed yelled. The crowd fell silent as they watched the two with wide eyes. “You promised him, Y/N. You promised us. You said you would be by our side through thick and thin and then you left,” Ed said, growing angrier and angrier by the minute.
“Technically, you left,” Y/N corrected him to which Ed scowled and turned away from her.
He walked to the front of the stage. “The point is. You promised and you broke it. You’re the one that’s lies, not me,” Ed told her. He glanced over at the hourglass which only had a few seconds left. “You have ten seconds left to find your answer,” he said coldly.
Y/N only smirked. “It’s a promise,” she said and Ed tensed before looking over at her. “What?” Ed asked. “The answer is a promise,” Y/N told him. “You sure?” Ed asked.
“Positive. After all, you were the one that gave it to me after bringing up the promise and all. Not that I didn’t know the answer to begin with. Did you really think I would stop solving riddles because of what happened between us?” Y/N said.
“Then why’d you fake not knowing the answer?” Ed asked. “Cause it’s much more fun when you give me the answers,” Y/N told him. Ed stared at her, no emotion crossing his face as he did so. Y/N smiled, “You going to tell them I’m correct or should I?”
Ed didn’t respond as he turned around. He lowered his head as he held his arms out to the sides. There was a brief moment of silence as everyone awaited Ed’s response.
Ed took a deep breath before holding his thumbs up and giving the crowd a smile as the crowd went wild.
Ed then turned to look at Y/N who was smiling at him. He couldn’t stop the smile on his face as he walked over to the girl. He stopped in front of her and she had to look up to be able to meet his eyes.
“Well played,” Ed told her.
His eyes scanned over her face before he brought his hand up and brushed a piece of hair behind her ear. He smirked when she let out a barely audible gasp. Ed left his hand there as he said, “We’re only halfway through though. And I assure you, you will not stump me.”
Y/N kept his gaze and replied with, “We’ll see about that.” Ed smiled and his eyes trailed over her face one more time before he pulled his hand away and walked past Y/N.
She hated to admit it, but she had really missed him and the cold feeling she got as soon as he had walked away from her was enough to only remind her of the fact.
Y/N let out the breath she had been holding and her eyes met Lee’s. Lee gave her a thumbs up and Y/N gave her a weak smile.
Ed was right. She had only completed the first half. She would have to stump Ed in a riddle to win the game. Y/N knew that’s exactly why Ed had made this a part of the game.
After all, no one was able to stump him.
Y/N froze at that. No one was able to stump him and maybe, just maybe, she could use that to her advantage.
“Okay, Y/N,” Ed called out. “You’ve had enough time to think of a riddle.” He looked over at her and smirked. “I hope you’ve come up with a good one,” he told her. Y/N only smiled, “I have.”
Ed looked at her in amusement and made his way behind the podium before looking over at her. “Then ask away,” he said.
Y/N grinned and grabbed Ed’s hat. Ed looked at her confused, but it quickly changed to one of amusement as he watched her walk up to the front of the stage and put the hat on slowly like he had.
“What three words are said too much, meant by few, but wanted by all?” Y/N asked. She then turned to Ed and pointed at him. “That is your riddle!”
Ed blinked in response while Y/N turned around to face him completely. “That’s your riddle? You’re kidding, right?” Ed asked.
Y/N just shrugged. “What’s the answer?” She asked.
“Easy,” he told her. “It’s ‘I love-‘“ Ed paused. He quickly cleared his throat. “The answer is, ‘I love-‘“ he tried again, but he still found himself not being able to say the last word.
Y/N raised an eyebrow and walked over to Ed slowly. “I love what, Riddler?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes stared directly into his and Ed gulped slightly. “Do you not know the answer?” Y/N asked, her voice obviously taunting him.
“I know the answer,” he hissed. “Then what is it?” Y/N asked. “You tricked me,” Ed stated.
“I did no such thing. After all, you said not a single cell in your body can even stand the idea of loving me, so if there are obviously no feelings involved, then say the words,” Y/N told him.
By now she knew that she wasn’t in this only for Lee. Y/N was in this because she had wanted to see Ed again. She had wanted to see him and see if a part of him still loved her.
“Say it!” someone in the crowd yelled. Ed shook his head. “I won’t say it,” Ed hissed.
Ed shook his head and Y/N watched as he went to so much effort not to say that last word.
Her heart broke a little knowing that he couldn’t even stand being able to mutter the words for a little gameshow. Y/N stared at him and then glanced at the hourglass.
A small, but sad smile was on her face as she took a step back from Ed. Ed watched after her.
He wanted to say the words, not for the gameshow, but for her, for Y/N. He wanted her to know that he still loved her, that he had always loved her. But he couldn’t find himself to say those words.
Y/N stared at him but when she saw that the time had run up, she looked away, not wanting Ed to see the hurt that was so evident in her eyes.
