Why I Study So Many Languages at the Same Time

This post was inspired by @lagom-languages‘s post “Why I Don’t Want to Become a Polyglot and Why I Only Learn One Language at a Time”. Disclaimer: These are my personal opinions and experiences and you may or may not agree with or relate to them. Everybody can learn as many or as few languages as they want and every language learner is valid regardless of the number of languages they study/can speak.  1. Because I love languages. They are all so beautiful, fascinating, and rich. They are more than just tools for communication or gaining prestige: they are the storehouses of different cultures and gateways to the hearts of people.  2. Because it’s what I’m good at and genuinely enjoy doing. I can’t do math to save my life and I was just average at other subjects, but languages have always come easily to me.  3. Because I had to. I live in Finland and my native language is Finnish. The first foreign language I started learning was English, because it is a mandatory school subject at school. Because Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, Swedish is also a mandatory school subject, which is why I also started learning it. Later in upper secondary school I had to pick between advanced mathematics and a foreign language, and because I despise math but love learning foreign languages, I went for the latter and picked German. That already makes three languages in total. There was no way I could have just decided to stick to only one language at a time. 4. Because knowing even a little bit of a language makes a difference. I’m going to quote one of my polyglot role models, Kató Lomb, to illustrate what I mean:

Like she says, “well-intentioned sentences full of mistakes can still build bridges between people”. In my experience that is absolutely right. I have seen the gloomiest, scariest looking people break into the biggest, most dazzling smiles just for saying “hello” or “thank you” to them in their language. Making people happy and smile like that is honestly one of my favourite things about learning languages.  5. Because I don’t mind progressing slowly. It’s an indisputable fact that the more languages you are learning at the same time, the slower your progress is and the longer it takes to become fluent in the language. I, however, don’t find that discouraging or demotivating. It doesn’t mean I’m not making any progress or that I will never reach my goals. I am and I will! I have multiple decades of time to learn languages, so there’s no need to rush. As the proverb goes, “slow and steady wins the race”.

Hey ho I‘m generally a very very dumb and stupid person and ugh, even this question might sound 100% to most of y‘all but.... how... do I become less... dumb? More intelligent?

I‘ve started doing concentration, memorization, attention improving exercises on apps like Peak and Neuronation lmao imagine Dr Kawashima‘s brain jogging haha. I‘m a v v slow thinker yo so—

I suck at literally everything from politics to maths (!!!) to commong knowledge, literature, geography.... science (except biology maybe lol) uh yah if anyone has some gr8 resources or stuff i could try to get my gray cells working again........... i‘d be v thankful

Ok, so I’ve kinda been in a similar situation before. Though I was always considered the 'smart' one in school and had good grades, which was mostly because I could memorize a lot of things really fast, I was so utterly uninformed and ignorant about most things it was truly embarrassing.  Not to mention I forgot 95% of stuff I learnt, once I was out of school. So here I am, re-learning the most elementary stuff at 25 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also, about being ‘dumb’: I've tutored maths to many of my classmates in high school. Mostly classmates with failing grades, ones that were considered 'dumb' by themselves or other people. I found it’s really not that they were actually 'dumb' and high school maths was way beyond their mental capabilities or whatever. They just lacked knowledge/intuition of most mathematics basics. No matter how hard you try, you can't solve polynomial equations if you don't understand equality properties or know how adding fractions works etc. and nobody was gonna re-teach them that in high school. So most people would just assume the’re ‘too dumb for maths’. But not knowing doesn’t make you any less intelligent.

The way I see it, some people can just memorize better and these are the people that will usually seem more 'intelligent'. And by memorize I mean more like remember and understand, rather than just remember. So being intelligent is just about knowing stuff and pretty much everybody is capable of that.

Now resources for some basic general knowledge:

for memory and learning

for problem solving

for basic maths

for basic physics

for basic economics

  • Economics I love the 'think for yourself' approach in this one. also not america-centric yay

for a briefing on history of things

for an explanation on how computer works

  • Code it starts to get rather technical halfway through tough you might want just stop reading there if it’s of no interest to you

Can't recommend much for history and politics yet(i’m a science person can you tell), but it's probably best to start learning about your native country first(or the one you live in), just enough to understand what's going on in the news.

Other books I recommend cause why not

  • Switch - how to change yourself or inspire others to change. I'm not usually a fan of self-help books but I find this one to be pretty spot on. also I adore the elephant/rider metaphor.
  • Mindstorms - focused on how children learn and the development of the LOGO language, great book.

these are just a starting point of course. Read through them(or find ones that suit you better), make flashcards of stuff you want to remember and then read/watch/take online courses on the subjects that got your interest.

It's quite overwhelming to realize how much you actually don’t know, but you don’t have to an expert in everything, really. So yeah try to have fun and good luck!

  9. A Basic Guide to College Textbooks

Tips

  1. Consider buying a past edition of the book. If it’s a textbook, and not a workbook with required questions, you can often get the same information for just a fraction of the current edition’s price.
  2. Try sharing with a friend (or more than one)! You can either take turns using the book, or scan the relevant pages and share them on google drive so you can all use the book for a much cheaper price.
  3. Buy off another student. They’ll already have taken the class (so they might also have some tips!) and will usually give you a cheaper price.
  4. Go to class first before buying the book. You might not need the same edition, it might just be a recommended reading and not required, or, if you’re super lucky, the instructor might send out PDFs of relevant chapters.
  5. Make use of your school’s library. Get there first after class and borrow the relevant book, or scan/photocopy the reading so you can do it in your own time without having to pay for the book.
  6. If you’re downloading from online, make sure your antivirus software is on. You don’t want to accidentally download a virus when all you wanted was a PDF (my antivirus has blocked textbook downloads before).
  7. Check shipping prices. A lot of comparison sites don’t include shipping in their listings, so make sure you check before buying something where the shipping is more than three times the cost of the book (or worse)!

Anyone else only in their 20s but feel like they are running out of time to get their life together??

Don’t. I felt this way too, in my twenties, but you know what? I began transitioning at 30. I went back to grad school at 32. I’m living my best life, and while I’m a little behind the curve compared to some of my classmates on some things, I’m also so far ahead of them on others. You need follow nobody’s schedule but your own. Life is hard and the world isn’t doing any of us favors. Be kind to yourself, and remember that you still have plenty of time. The only difference between starting now and 5 or 10 years earlier is now you have more experience.

I needed to hear this so badly
