it actually weirds me out how many people think “kick it” is a good response to animals

i mainly get this working with birds - a goose lunges, or a parrot clings onto me and bites, and people tend to go “kick it” “slap it” “whack it” but it’s across the board with different species

(this is about animals that realistically can’t do serious damage or lethally attack)

like…it’s an animal who is communicating in an appropriate way for its species that i have irritated it, or scared it, or crossed it’s boundaries, or gotten too close to its food/home/offspring. immediately striking back is only going to amplify the situation, and make it less trusting in the future

is receiving a warning bite or kick or swipe startling, annoying, stressful? sure. am i going to proceed to be a dick about it to an animal that is communicating in a logical way for that animal? no??????

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

lots of people are reblogging this and tagging it #piracy—i should clarify, this is not piracy! ripping DVDs and CDs to have your own copy is fully legal, because it’s your legal right to do what you will with your property individually. it only becomes illegal if you then distribute that file on the internet.

Plant of the Day

Thursday 4 April 2024

Here Pulmonaria saccharata (lungwort) is thriving in this shady border of a walled garden. The funnel-shaped flowers are borne in shades of blue and pink, they are popular with bees, particularly the hairy footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes).

You can donate to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund for as little as $1.00.

There is a fee you can choose to apply to cover processing.

Which if you choose to do leaves you with a total of ~$1.35 (USD) depending on the type of card you have.

PCRF has a score of 97% on Charity Navigator.

Adults and children alike are currently dying in Palestine due to starvation. (World Health Organization Link)

The Gaza Strip is one of two places in the entire world that is categorized as Phase 5 (the highest phase) on the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification scale.

So even if you think it isn't enough, remember that donating even as little as $1.35 helps! It's $1.35 they wouldn't have had otherwise. So donate if you can. 🇵🇸

stripping completely naked to keep her attention while I infodump about ants

sorry babe we will not be having sex until I explain the difficulties in raising a colony of Formica rufa ants I don't care how hard you are right now

Put your clothes back on and start infodumping right now. I’m invested

no I'm not putting my clothes back on

anyway did you know that ants actually invented agriculture millions of years before humans did

wait they what???????

okay so leafcutter ants don't actually eat leaves. they bring them back to the colony, chew them up into leaf beds, and then plant a special species of fungus on them!!! they then tend, grow, and harvest the fungus and use that to feed the colony. on nuptial flights, new queen ants take a small piece of fungus with them to plant in their new colonies. they've been doing this for so long that the fungus has evolved to where it can't reproduce on its own, and produces extra large and extra nutritious bulbs for the ants to eat! similar to the human process of selective breeding but slower and less extreme. here's a time lapse of leafcutter ants growing their fungus gardens!

Wait until you here about ants inventing dairy herding...inventive little buggers

TELL ME ABOUT THE DAIRY HERDING

"Several species of ants have a special symbiotic relationship with aphids- they farm them! Aphids feed primarily on the sap from plants and secrete a liquid called honeydew. This secretion is very sugar-rich, and quite favoured by ants as a food source. As a result, a system has been hashed out by these insects wherein the ants herd the aphids around to the juiciest parts of plants, protect them from predators, and carry them into their nests at night and for winter. In return they are allowed to ‘milk’ the aphids- stroking the aphids with their antennae, coaxing them to secrete their honeydew which is then lapped up by the ant. In every species of ants, workers will specialize in different roles such as nursing or foraging to fulfill the needs of the colony - in farming ants, some workers will specialize just in shepherding and caring for the aphids! There's even some evidence that ants build pastures of a sort, to keep their herded aphids in. When the colony departs one nest site to form another at a new location, they will carry an aphid egg with them, to establish a new herd and maintain their resources.

If you are wondering what all the fuss for honeydew is about, you should know that many areas of the world, most notably Germany’s Black Forest, actually tend bee colonies that collect and make honey from honeydew, resulting in a stronger tasting, darker product. Ants certainly are the world’s oldest, and smallest, farmers."

From here:

They even have to protect their herds from predators cuz who like to eat aphids? Ladybugs! I´ve seen the herding and herd protection in action several times but can´t seem to find my pictures of it, except this one!

(Picture of a wolf aka a ladybug stalking the herd aka aphids on a thistle)

Anyway, if you ever come across a large group of aphids on a plant, it is worth checking out if there are ants crawling around them cuz it is might be an ant ranch.

just doing a poll for my own Aro/Ace curiosity.

I don't want to hear from non Ace people on this one please. I'm also kinda trying to prove a point about there being more Ace people on this site. (As I seem to have collected them all, but none of them know each other). So my fellow ace people, please share this with all of your followers and we'll get a fun little social experiment out of it.

non ace people are encouraged to reblog, but don't vote; Thank you.
