Between the Veil and Crown

Arvek is the Crown Prince of Harlofelp, a kingdom with few worries and threats.  However, after his brother Selim is kidnapped by a healer living in the Veil Villages, Arvek is confronted with the cost of his father’s reign.  Just trying to get his brother back, he finds himself challenged with the question of continuing ignoring problems as his father, or defying his father’s expectations.

Kylin is a Ranger of the Veil Forest, sworn to maintain balance between nature and civilization- an oath made difficult by the Harlofelp soldiers in the Veil Villages.  Normalcy unravels as things hidden in the dark of the forest come to light and the seal on an ancient evil erodes.

I hate hearing rhetoric of how America doesn't have walkable cities and whatnot.

Because you know what?

Where I am, you can walk to certain places, but you have to drive to others, and I like it.

I like being away from busyness. I like seeing space in people's backyards. I like being surrounded by forest. I like the scenery I get to drive by. I like how you can take walks and just enjoy the open air.

Yes, I know it's not convenient for everyone. I know people want to live in areas where they could simply walk somewhere, or have better public transport. But I like having a car to use, and being able to stow away purchases, or park my car in a parking lot and take a little nap because I can't go home quite yet and I'd like a little shut eye. . . .

Not everyone wants to live in this "convenient" city. Cities are too crowded for my taste. There are too many people and too little space. They're expensive. I don't feel as safe in a city.

Start talking about how to make my "city" [it is technically a city, according to the state, but it's wicked small] more walkable or increase public transportation, and I go insane. Don't ruin my hometown just so you can have it fit what you think is necessary.

We don't like or want the same things. Don't change my living space to fit your ideals.
