Mini Phantom Invasion

<<Chapters One - Six | << Chapters Seven - Twelve

^^^^^

*****

These chapters were inspired by this post by @blackfoxsposts

*****

Here’s two chapters! The first is a recap of the two years we skipped over and the second is Danny interact with some of the BatFam

🤍🖤💚💙💚🖤🤍

Chapter 13

Danny sighed as they stared out into the dark purple foliage of the forrest. They and Elle had been exploring the far reaches of the Zone for the last week, bonding and spending time together before things got busy again.

They would be returning tomorrow, to Phantoms Keep, as their eighteenth birthday was the day after. It was also the day of their coronation and the day they would officially claim Elle as their daughter. It was crazy to think that it had already been two years since they’d fled their old dimension.

*****

Danny and Dan had become the protectors of Japan, as a whole, during those two years. They had even trained with Katana every now and then, that had been an interesting meeting that lead to Dan working part-time with the justice league.

Danny themself preferred to remain in Japan and had only met the main members of the JL once, during their initial introduction. They and Dan had set up their head quarters in the village they had first started out in. It had now bloomed from a simple farming village into a small town that rivalled Amity Park in size. Though its main focus was still farming and the production of grains and fruit.

The area that housed the hot spring, their cave and both the big shrine and the smaller shrine had been left undisturbed and was still surrounded by forest, as it was declared the Holy Hunting Grounds and home to Japan’s protector spirits.

The small town had expanded in the opposite direction and its’ architecture and atmosphere kept to a historic aesthetic, their were no modern glass structure or tall buildings. Not that the interiors were devoid of modern facilities but, if one were to visit, it would seem as if you had stepped into the past. The Shrine stood as the tallest building and had been expanded to resemble a historic Shiro or castle. Their new symbol displayed proudly on its Tori Gate and above its entrance.

Danny and Dan had come up with a new symbol in their first month of actively protecting the town and before they started to include the whole of Japan as their haunts territory. It was now a circle with a white, up right triangle in the centre and a stylised version of the Kanji 幻 (maboroshi), meaning Phantom/vision/illusion/dream/phantasm. The Kanji and circle that adorned Dan’s suit were red to match the bracelet on his wrist, while Danny’s circle was red and the Kanji was Ecto-green.

Even Elle’s wore the new symbol, both the circle and Kanji were a slightly paler green. It had become their family insignia, similar to the Bats and Birds of Gotham. They still went by Phantom when operating outside of Japan but were now mainly known as Maboroshi to the people of Japan.

Over the last two years Danny had gone back to their old dimension a few times, at first it was to check in with Jazz, Sam and Tucker but they had started to grow distant the more he refused to return. Jazz understood, encouraged it even but Sam and Tucker didn’t understand, Sam viewed it as abandoning their duty and Tucker thought they were just over reacting, that they could just live somewhere else and things would be fine. It had all come to an end the last time the had seen them. The other reason they had returned, with Dan, was to look for clues about their mother.

They had spoken more with Pandora and the ghost they had learned was their aunt, she went by Rina, she had told them that their mother was the Mother of Merfolk in her home dimension and was known as Aqua Rigina, a goddess to those who live in the see. She had passed her title to her daughter, their older sister, before fading from her dimension to travel and explore with her new found freedom.

She had found a home in a new dimension, amongst a different pantheon and it was while traveling the dimensions, connected to the greek pantheon, that she came to care for a human. She new she would not be able to stay but she had hoped to be able to visit often. She never got the chance to tell him once she found out she was pregnant and well… they knew the rest.

They and Dan had made no progress on finding out who their father was nor what dimension he was in. They only knew that the dimension was connected to the Greek pantheon but that was hardly helpful when there were so many. Short of entering their DNA into every universes data base, which they did not want to do, they could only hope they bumped into someone who knew. Danny knew there was a chance that their father would want nothing to do with them but they still hoped, that small part of them that had never grown up, craved to be accepted by their family.

On the brighter side, they had met with their older sister and her husband, though they brought sad news about her mother. She had accepted and welcomed both of them. They had spent some time with them, getting to know them and the other Mermaids of The Seven Seas, they even learned about their mer powers. It had been fun to meet their sister, brother-in-law and niece.

*****

Danny had only just fallen asleep when they heard twig snap, they opened their eyes and slowly sat up, coiling their tail tighter around Elle, who had shifted to her creature form in her sleep. They kept their focus in the direction the sound had come from, pupils blown wide to peer into the unnatural darkness of the Ghost Zone forest.

Chapter 14

Danny continued to watch and listen, even as they slowly roused Elle from her sleep, making a low growling purr and and a short series of quiet clicks, warning her of the potential threat and to stay in her creature form. She was quick to go on alert, ears twitching, trying to find what had put them on edge.

They listened to the near silent footsteps, there were two, one significantly heavier than the other. As the two figures drew closer and they could just make out their forms, Danny released a long, low warning hiss. The figures paused, for a moment, at the edge of the forest, just out of sight. Danny stopped their hiss and watched, waited, for their response.

Minutes ticked by before the larger figure moved, slowly, forward and into the small clearing. The beginnings of a hiss was cut short when Danny recognised who was currently standing before them. Bruised and battered, cracks in their armour and an unconscious blue bird slung over their back. The smaller figure stepped forward soon after, revealing the hard to miss combination of red, yellow and red.

“Batman?” Danny was shocked and confused as to why Batman and two of his birds would be in the Infinite Realms, let alone how they had gotten in and so far from any of the main haunts. “Do you need help?”

The smaller bird shifted into a defensive stance but Batman placed a calming hand on his shoulder. “Phantom. Do you know where we are?”

Straight to business it is then, they thought wryly as the corner of their lips twitched in amusement, they motioned them forward and ignited the campfire. They watched as the three drew closer, Batman gently lay Nightwing on the ground and checked him over before taking a seat across from them, on the other side of the fire. Robin was hesitant but soon followed Batman’s lead and took his own seat.

Danny relaxed, leaning back, using their tail as a back rest. They pulled Elle onto their lap and held her close, letting out a calming purr as they silently let her know who the new comers were and that they weren’t a threat… to them anyway.

“You are currently in the Infinite Realms or the Ghost Zone to pit it frankly. It’s where those who died violent deaths, have unfinished business, a strong attachment to the living ream or were created by the culmination of a belief go when the die. You, though, are not dead.” Danny looked them over, they were definitely in rough shape but they were alive.

“So how, may I ask, did you end up here?” Danny started running their claws through Elles hair as they waited for a response. They knew Batman was weighing his options, they hadn’t worked together often, Dan was the one who had the most interaction with the JL.

“We were fighting against the League of assassins, you’ve had run ins with them before according to Maboroshi. Nightwing was knocked unconscious, Robin went to catch him before he fell into the Lazarus Pit but their line was cu by an assassin. I went after them, instead of being submerged in Pit water, we were transported here.”

“Hmm, how long have you been here? Maboroshi hasn’t made contact, so he must not have been informed of your disappearance yet. You are lucky I had been close by, I don’t normally venture out this far.” Elle chirped and repositioned herself, seeing as they were safe, she was quick to go back to sleep.

“Hnn.” Batman looked into the fire, no doubt processing the fact that they were in the land of the dead.

“Who is that?” Robin asked, demanded.

“Robin!” Batman was quick to give his version of admonishment.

“What, it is a perfectly valid point of questioning, they are an unknown.” Batman sighed as he turned back to Phantom.

“To answer your question, Robin, this is my daughter. We are on a bonding trip, though we will be returning home tomorrow.” He watched as Batman physically perked up at the mention of a child, Danny found it amusing that such a large and intimidating figure had such a soft spot for children. “Back to the reason you are here and how long has it been, since you entered the Realms?”

“It has only been a few hours but Nightwing needs medical attention, as does Robin.” Batman ignored Robins pointed gaze.

“And you, I assume, by the looks of your suit. Rest for now and do what you can to field dress your wounds. I’ve got extra food you can eat, its human safe. Once you’re rested and fed, I’ll bring you to the Far Frozen to get a proper medical check. I’ll also send out a message to Maboroshi, get him to let the other Bats and Birds you’re ok.” Danny slowly set Elle into the cradle of their tail, as the reached for their travel pack that contained their food. They had snacks and junk food mostly but they also had pre-made meals they could heat on a fire. Setting up the rack to hold the fire safe containers, they made sure the food wouldn’t fall before turning their attention to their accidental guests. “Once you’re cleared by Frostbite, I’ll bring you to Phantoms Keep and get you through a portal home.”

“Thank you, Phantom.” Batman turned his attention to tending to Nightwing as Robin continued to stare at them.

“How do you know we can trust them?” Batman sighed and answered before Danny could say anything.

“Phantom is a protector spirit, Robin, it is in their nature to protect those they deem as theirs and help those that need it. It is more complex than that but that is the gist of it.” Robin huffed but seamed to be satisfied, for now, with the answer.

*****

The clearing had been silent as the Gotham vigilantes ate, Batman continued to check on Nightwing, though you wouldn’t know it by just looking at his expression, Danny could feel the worry, guilt and pain, coming off the big bad bat, as they fussed over Nightwing and Robin. Much to the young boys annoyance but Danny could tell he felt comfort in knowing that Batman cared for him, along with his own worry for Nightwing.

Once the two vigilantes had finished their meals and everything had been packed away, Danny carefully picked up Elle and their travel pack. They floated up and shifted their tail to legs, before putting out the fire and upping their own natural glow to provide light for Batman and Robin. Batman picked up Nightwing, resettling them on his back and waited for Robin to join him before following after Phantom.

Mer!Danny won the poll. And tumblr keeps eating my intros.enjoy!

Origin of Mer!Danny

Danny wasn’t sure when he started hiding in the aquarium as Phantom, but it happened. Hey knew he had a bad habit of checking that the bubblers and air filters for the animals were working.

The sharks… spooked him at first. Mostly the big ones. The rays are sea pancakes he coos at. But the big sharks? The ones that look like sharks send something in the back of his mind off.

The day he was flung into a tank as Phantom he froze.

This annoyingly strong ecto-octopus showed up and kept going after him as Fenton and Phantom. And responded to Taco, Tapa, and Toby. So name probably stars with a T and its intent on keeping him.

At least Skulker stays in the thermos.

Valerie was handling it her way, and he hated that it calmed him down.

Danny just. Wanted a break from it.

And now the stupid sharks were swimming to him and. And.

He blacked out a bit.

He was tiny.

The shark was huge.

The sharks were around him and… brushed against him for the most part.

He was pushed to tiny cave by one’s fin and just… stayed there.

Evil Taco can’t hurt him here.

Danny wiggled at that. He was tiny. And his tail was… different? He blinked slowly at it. The pattern reminded him of drum fish and scorpion, but looked more like a koi fish with the fancy fins and shape.

He managed to look at his hands and oh. He has black scales there too. And some flecks of green. A bit(?) of his sides had a slip of white and then it was just his skin.

He. He needs a nap.

Danny passes out in the little cave the sharks gave him.

Taglist will be on master post just so i don’t have to scroll on all the parts. Masterpost should be tagged as such, and i’ll link it here

A Man Has Needs - Part 2

DP x DC Ship: Dead on Main Summary:

In which Jason keeps up ending up in Danny's bed and not even for any fun reasons.

Part 2

Danny awoke Wednesday morning to the second coming of his human shaped bedmate. Of course with the terrible shape the guy’s core was in he hadn’t expected the first time to be the last time.

He sighed and rested his forehead on the warm bare chest right in front of him, closing his eyes again. Despite the dumpster smell, Danny was really freaking comfortable in the guy’s arms, pressed skin to skin, enveloped in his larger frame. Sighing again he slipped intangibly out of the hold. It was one thing to cuddle incidentally while sleeping, entirely another to continue while he was awake.

The guy was here because he was starving.

Life is Like a Stranger by through_shadows_falling

T, 70k, wangxian

Summary:  The marketplace was too loud, too much, and Lan Zhan couldn’t breathe.
So he ran from his brother and uncle and hid in a back alley, which was not as empty as he thought.
Enter the dirtiest boy Lan Zhan had ever met - a boy who called himself Wei Ying.
(AKA Lan Zhan brings Wei Ying back to Cloud Recesses and this is their childhood as they grow up together.  Spans ages 8-15, ending right before the lectures )
My comments:  omg, THEY’RE SUCH TINY WIDDLE CUTIES aaaarrrrggghhhh!
Lan Zhan is autistic-coded, which means he’s easily (and wildly) overstimulated and often utterly tongue-tied. He’s got a twitch in his hands that he can’t control when he’s too stressed (which leads to some bullying). Wei Ying is a beam of sunshine, of course, and he and Lan Zhan are inseparable from the get-go (although his carefree ways cause baby lz soooo much stress).
The years pass, and the boys remain intertwined, growing together. Lan Zhan suffers a few fits of jealousy, because it’s hard to share his Wei Ying, who is bubbly and outgoing and still collects friends (like grouchy Jiang Cheng). But he does learn, and his own world is expanded that way, too.
In the latter half of the story, puberty creeps up, and Lan Zhan starts to realize that his feelings for Wei Ying aren’t brotherly at all. Wei Ying, because he is a disaster bi, doesn’t notice at all, which leads to pining and angst, because teens, amirite?
A lovely story, and I ADORED them as children, and it’s such a delight that it got finished. (Ends just before canon begins.)

Throwback Rec

(Original rec by Mojo. Bookmarked on April 21, 2020.)

Kay’s comments: 💙 I actually discovered this story back in the day when Mojo was still running this blog due to her own rec! I was still pretty new in fandom and this was the first story I read where the Lans took little A-Ying home with them and Wei Wuxian got raised in Gusu alongside Lan Wangji. There’s so many things I adore about this story. Most of all the characterization of Wangxian as children. The neurodivergence is strong with them. And also, A-Ying’s trauma from living on the streets. The two of them imprint on each other immediately, but as they grow older, there are some struggles in their relationship as well, especially when they realize that they like each other like that. A Spanish and a Russian translation of the story are available as well!

💠🧡Catching Your Reflection Passing By

By:Suspicious_Popsicle

Summary:

Sometimes reflections showed Lan Zhan glimpses of another life.

It had been happening for as long as he could remember. Usually—at least at the start, back when he was learning to brush his own teeth, and still needed a stool to stand on to reach the sink—he would see the boy in the bathroom mirror. In the very beginning, he had parents with him...something that Lan Zhan and his brother did not have in their uncle's quiet home. Lan Zhan remembers watching them, that happy family, grinning at each other in the mirror, laughing as they poked the corners of each other's mouths to stretch those smiles even wider. It all looked very silly.

Damian, early into his stay with his Father and right at the precipice of his hatred of Tim, finds a sword. It is named Soul Shredder, and rumored to have belonged to a very strong spirit of vengeance. He decides to use it to prove he is superior to Drake.

He takes the sword, walks up behind Drake's unsuspecting form, and with one clean cut; he lops off his head.

The reaction of Father is instant; he screams. It's a hollow, broken thing. It's full of grief and rage and pain, and Damian takes one look at his Fathers eyes and knows it is time to run.

This is not a victory.

This is not an achievement.

He will not be praised.

He is going to be hunted to the ends of the earth.

He turns and flees, just in time to hear Grayson scream as well; horrified turning to enraged.

He runs from them for months. At one point even Todd joined in, congratulating Damian on making Father willing to break his code and kill the Joker if it meant help in hunting him down. After that Todd had struck, managing to take Damian's arm in a moment of weakness.

At six months, he finds himself cornered.

Grandfather and Mother had agreed with Father upon hearing how badly Damian had shamed himself, and were watching apathetically from behind the Batman.

Batman, Nightwing, and Red Hood move forward as one.

Batman, Nightwing, and Red Hood strike as one.

Damian blinks...and falls backwards, letting go of the sword he just grabbed.

Drake turns around, startled, head still attached to his neck.

Ears ringing, Damian can't hear whatever Father is saying as he pats him down for injuries. Can't hear whatever Drake says as he moves forward cautiously to do his own injury check.

All he can think of is that he has been given a second chance, and he cannot allow anything to happen to Drake.

Or; Damian touches Soul Shredder, the blade of the Fright Knight. It was in the Batcave for storage, since apparently Constantine won it in a skewed deal and didn't want it around him. As a result, he's thrown into a nightmare of his own worst subconscious fears; being rejected after doing what he was supposed to do, and losing a fight. Now, he's overly paranoid of anything at all happening to Tim.
Avatar
ailithnight

Damian is going to be so so so terrified of ever doing anything to even mildly upset Bruce or the others ever again. The slightest sigh is going to having him tensing, recoiling, backpedaling, or even running.

He's also not gonna trust himself about what is and is not the right thing to do. Because as far as he was taught, killing Tim to secure his own place was correct. But then it wasn't. And now he doesn't know anymore. And all he can do is try to find the right answers in whatever the others do or say.

It's like overnight, Damian does a complete 180. From an arrogant, entitled brat trying to assert himself as the one and only worthy, the "Blood Son." To suddenly being the meekest, most deferential, most people pleasing kid on the planet. Quietly of course; silently, subtly, so as not to alarm or alert the others to his alternate misdeeds lest they turn on him again.

Damian is going to metaphorically cleave and contort himself into the smallest, least offensive, least obtrusive box he can find; desperately hoping it's good enough to never see that wild vengeance and bloodlust in his Father's eyes again.

And I want Tim to be the one to realize that whatever Damian experienced when he picked up that sword, it didn't just teach him a lesson. It deeply and irrevocably traumatized him.

Tim knocked on Damian's door.

Bruce was thrilled that the weird sword had managed to speedrun Damian's personality past the 'I'm superior' stage. Dick was happy that Damian was 'getting along' with everyone.

Tim knew better.

Something was up.

If Dick so much as made a fast movement, Damian would flinch.

If Bruce sighed, really about anything at all, Damian would leave.

He always covered it up, but Tim knew a scared kid when he saw one.

Also, Damian didn't seem to be able to control his fear when he saw Tim.

His hands would start to shake. His eyes would glaze over. He would use any excuse he could to sneakily take Tim's pulse. He'd gone from a semi-regular kid with daddy issues to a meek, subservient...Tim. Gala Tim, to be precise.

When he'd been afraid to walk wrong at the risk of being told he was embarrassing his parents.

If he hadn't been there for the sword thing, he would have seriously thought Bruce and Dick were verbally abusing Damian.

Tim was going to get to the bottom of it.

Bruce and Dick were insistent that Damian was fine, just finally cooled off. He didn't display any signs of a traumatized kid, so it was okay. He'd just decided to step up; he was being responsible by not carrying any weapons. He was taking care of himself by insisting he learn how to clean his room and do his laundry. He was just, finally, growing up.

The ten year old.

But the concerning mentality of Bruce and Dick aside, Tim knew that Damian, just like himself, knew what the expected signs of a traumatized child were. Knew how to hide those signs when they presented themselves.

The door cracked open, after much shuffling from the other side. Damian was blocking the door, then.

"Can I come in? You're allowed to say no." Tim murmured, keeping his hands to his sides, being as nonthreatening as possible.

Damian hesitated.

"...I am?"

"Yes. If you let me in, you're also allowed to tell me to leave. It's your room. I won't be angry, no one will."

Damian slowly opened the door a bit more, and nodded.

Tim stepped into the room.

The bed was unused, he clocked that in an instant. The dresser had been what Damian was placing in front of the doors, he could see the groove marks. The wardrobe, desk, and couch had been moved in front of the windows. The curtains were tied shut with more than just the curtain tiebacks, lengths of rope had been taken from storage and laced together to keep the curtains shut.

Damian quietly shut the door behind him, and as Tim turned to face him, he caught a glimpse of clothes in the bathtub.

Damian was sleeping in the bathtub, then.

No wonder he'd been refusing to allow Alfred into his room.

Damian hadn't said anything.

Tim knew it was because he was afraid to say anything.

Whatever Damian had seen, whatever that sword had done, staying in the Manor wasn't doing him any good.

If anything, it was making him worse.

"You don't feel safe here," Tim started, his eyes boring into Damian's own. "I don't know what happened, but I know it had to do with that sword. You cut yourself on it, and now you're afraid of Bruce and Dick. Do you want to tell me what happened?"

Damian broke eye contact and looked at the floor.

"Okay. You don't have to. Do you want me to leave?"

A small shake of the head.

"Then, do you want to leave? Live somewhere else while you come to terms with...whatever that was?"

Damian said nothing, but tensed like he was preparing for a hit.

"Damian, you can say yes or no. There is no wrong answer, and I'll take the heat if B gets pissy."

There. That got a response.

Damian's head jerked up, and his eyes were full of fear. His body seemed to move on it's own, without it's owner realizing it, and he clung to Tim's shirt with both hands.

"No! He'll-" Damian cut himself off, looking down.

"...Then, should I touch the sword? To learn what it does?"

The hands tightened, and Tim knew that his shirt was going to be permanently deformed from the stretching.

Damian said nothing, though.

Tim winced. He'd pushed the kid too far, damn.

"Do you want to come with me? I have a lot of safehouses that are specifically designed against Bruce."

Damian hunched his shoulders, head bowing until it was resting on Tim's chest.

"I have contingencies for everyone, including him. You'll be safe, I promise."

Damian nodded.

Tim double checked Damian was sitting down for his virtual therapy session before he opened up a secure line and placed a call. Personally he would have preferred not having any cameras in Damian's room, an already paranoid kid didn't need to feel like he was constantly being watched, but Damian had insisted that his actions needed to be monitored. Like he was some kind of criminal.

Tim had however insisted on the camera placement. A placement with multiple blind spots and didn't focus on Damian's bed, bathroom or desk. He could see Damian in the video on his monitor, but couldn't read his lips or see what the therapist was doing on the call. He technically could hack the call, but he promised to Damian that he wouldn't, explicitly stating it so they could start building trust.

"Hey Red!" Impulse said cheerfully, of course the speedster would be the first to answer the line. "Haven't heard from you for a while, you good?"

He could see how Impulse was already vibrating with movement, ready to sprint to Gotham at the slightest hint. He smiled.

"First off, no one is danger or about to be in danger." Important to clarify that right off the bat. "Secondly, could you get the rest of the team on the call?"

"You got it!"

Danny and the latest incarnation of the Demons ends up in Star City. They're doing ninja stuff as a way to get resources and find a way home. Green Arrow overhears mentions of "Great One" and "Demon's Head" and maybe Dani is there and gets called dahlia and it's misheard as Talia

Ollie: Batman, come over here and get your de-aged villains

Bruce: What makes you so sure they're mine?

Ollie: They're ninjas and their leader, who kicked my ass, is referred to as "Great One" so yes, I'm sure these are the League of Assassins under an alias. Or clones

Ra's finds this entire thing hilarious. Damian, not so much

Oliver is not having a good time. He noticed some shady activity going down in his city's underbelly and decided to investigate. Star City wasn't as crime-infested as Gotham, but it wasn't sunshine and rainbows either.

It was far better hidden, but corruption ran amok in his home, so he had to run around to get things fair. He noticed the ninjas only after a while of them being in town. At first, they seemed focused on gaining territory.

They moved from the poorest neighborhoods to the richest, slowly beating out the top dogs. It seemed the leader had the same mentality of prison- beat the toughest person on his first day and become the new number one. Usually, that wouldn't work with such solid and old operations, but somehow, the ninjas were doing it.

The bats have so many folks around, even if they aren't always working together. Enough that folks like to joke/write about Danny just kinda showing up acting like he already lives there. He just kinda blends in.

I'd love to see more magic motivated versions of this. Some kind of spell that affects the bat's perceptions of the past and present, making them actually miss that this boy wasn't with their family too long ago. Maybe it changes their understanding like it's a time line shift, maybe it fogs their mind just a tad and makes them glaze past something like it wasn't even there. I like the second if only because I feel like that would make it more likely for the bats to realize a spell was a foot.

Imagining this from Danny's side, hes terrified this whole time of getting found out. He knows how and when he showed up here and maybe even how flimsy whatever magic is in place is. Imagining a Desiree wish that was either very carefully worded or Not so carefully worded. Maybe he placed himself with the Wayne family with the expectation that he would quietly mooch of some rich idiot until he was ready to be on his own. Or maybe he wished himself to be a part of the batclan, taking up a mask and patroling with them as a bird that Doesn't Exist.

Ofc eventually the spell has to be broken, leaving the bats confused worried scared angry probably even amused, and a billion other things. WHY did this teenager decide to adopt himself into the Wayne/bat family? Who the hell is he and where did he come from. Someone call Zatanna, there is some magic Fuckery going on.

Danny; alone, scared, suffering, tired; waits for his parents to go upstairs for the night and finally does the one thing everyone knows not to do in Amity Park. Delirious and exhausted and thoughts too slurred to lawyer his words to extreme specificity -it's fine, no outcome could be worse than this- he wishes. He wishes his family would just accept him for who and what he is.

Green mist and magic wrap around him like a snake. It should feel choking, but really it's nice to be held. Familiar words echo from empty air. They should fill him with dread, but he can only feel relief. Green and black wash across his vision and Danny lets it take him away.

The next thing Danny is cognizant of is a softness beneath him. A quiet beeping keeping perfect time with his slow heart rate beside him. His wounds have been tended to and the screaming agony in his body has been replaced with a dulled ache. There is a slight pinching in the crook of his arm, but otherwise Danny is as comfortable as he could be. This is wrong. He made a Wish. Desiree should have done something to it. Twisted it into something else. Something dangerous. Danny jolts to alertness, trying to put himself in a defensible position in preparation for whatever wicked trick Desiree had pulled.

"Whoa, whoa, easy there, Baby Spooks! You're safe. We've got you." A blurry, black gloved hand reaches for Danny and he can't stop the full body flinch that comes of it. The hand freezes. Danny's eyes flick around, trying to see, to understand. But whatever is being pumped into him via the IV in his arm must be extremely potent to be dulling his pain and keeping his thoughts sluggish.

Finally, his eyes focus, honing in on the hand still outstretched towards him. Too big to be Mom's. To small to be Dad's. Some kind of fabric, not hazmat rubber. With blue fingers not present on any of his parents' suits. He lets his gaze follow the blue, trailing up a lithe but muscular arm to a broad chest where the blue lines become a familiar blue symbol.

"Ni-win?" There's a soft chuckle, somewhere between rue and relief, that snaps Danny's gaze up to Nightwing's unmasked face. Why is Nightwing unmasked? Aren't vigilantes supposed to guard their identities with their lives? Aren't the Bats supposed to be notoriously paranoid and banal about threats to theirs? "Wha-"

"There you are, Danny. Careful now. You took quite a beating last night." Nightwing knows his name. Nightwing is unmasked in front of him, staring at him with such relief and concern and trust. Like he knows Danny. Cares about him. But there's a certain emptiness in the hero's eyes. A way his gaze glazes right over Danny's bandaged injuries. Not questioning. Not even quite acknowledging. Just accepting.

Acceptance.

That's what Danny wished for. Acceptance for who and what he was. Nightwing called him Baby Spooks. So casually. So endearingly. Like he knew what Danny was and was okay with it. Acceptance from... family?

A door opens and Danny can't fight the instinctual way his eyes slide over to it. Holy shit, that's Bruce Wayne. Holy shit that's Bruce Wayne in The Batman suit.

"Good morning, Danny. How you feeling, son?"

Holy shit, Bruce Wayne, Batman, thinks Danny is his son. Desiree made the Bats Danny's family. And made them accept him. By not questioning it. And clearly implanted memories that they know him. But Danny doesn't know them. He knows of the Bats. And tangentially knows a tiny bit about Bruce Wayne because Tuck adored Wayne-tech. But Danny doesn't know these people. And they think they know him. Think they trust him. Enough to reveal their identities. Because they think he's family.

Danny's head is spinning and his breathing stuttering and his heart rate climbing and all he can do is stare, terrified and bewildered, at the unmasked vigilantes in front of him. Holy shit, he's so screwed.

I want more of this so bad. How does danny react? What should he do? Does he fess up immediately or play along?

Can he pretend he has memory loss? (Does he have a head injury to make it believable?) If he asks how he got here, will they have implanted false memories or a suspicious lack of knowledge? Maybe faking amnesia isn't a good idea if asking questions draws attention to the situation.

But he doesn't know them well enough to determine how they'll react to the truth, dammit. Maybe he can just... not speak unless spoken to, and if they ask anything of them, claim he isnt feeling well.

He should probably call tucker, see if his memories were altered and how, and have him look up the waynes to see if recent their history had been altered to accommodate danny's presence. Oh god what if desiree had altered reality so danny had always been part of the wayne family and had never met sam and tucker? Shit. Shit shit shit.

Nightwing is trying to get his attention. A breathing exercise? Oh, danny's panicking. Right.

Danny is, if nothing else, a magnificent bullshitter. He would almost call bullshitting his way into and out of situations to be his greatest strength, if it weren't for the whole saving people thing. He doesn't know these people. Not the way they seem to know and accept him. But that doesn't mean he can't bullshit like he does.

He takes the time of Nightwing leading him through breathing exercises to come up with a plan. Or at least the approximation of a plan.

Things he knows: His parents cut him open last night, so even if he were to leave the Batcave (Batcave!!) he wouldn't have anywhere else safe to go. And he's still badly injured and in need of medical care and time to recover. Care the Waynes seem willing to give, though he doesn't know how much time he has.

If Cass comes back from whatever she had to do for plot reasons (Mission in Hongkong? Ballet thing?), she'd see immediately that Danny doesn't really fit in, how unsure he is with their dynamics like he doesn't actually know any of them, but also the massive guilt he feels, like he thinks this situation is his fault to begin with. Would she be hit with Desiree's magic as well and wonder why, or would she come home to a new kid in their midst drowning in guilt while everyone acts like and thinks he was there for a long time, with her not having been hit with the spell because of distance?

Either way, I think she would see his desperation and that he's not a threat and probably try to get to know him and his side of the story to figure this out. And then just help and reassure him and not say anything until either Danny decides to tell them or the Batfam figure out something is wrong, but still be on Danny's side and help him explain to the Bats when the reveal comes. And the Waynes know that Cass is basically the best to see if there is sth iffy going on, and if she didn't say anything, then he really isn't a threat. After they did their own interrorgating and research, of course. It was still some magic bullshit that gave them a new kid with no one even noticing or questioning, and the Bats are, after all, notoriously allergic to magic. Especially B.

So:

1) Desiree ain’t a tech ghost, and she likes discrepancies to make the bats work out the fraud faster. Tim’s physical records all reflect a new sibling - his digital records don’t, and no matter how he tries, there’s no evidence he was hacked

(This makes Danny look like a more powerful magical opponent)

(Bonus points if physical records record at least 3 different ways Danny “joined the family” from different time periods, and none of the bats remember the same ones)

2) Danny’s with the bats because Bruce made a dumbass remark at exactly the same time while Desiree was spinning the globe for Danny’s new family and said something joking like

“I wish just one of my children would accept a hug”

Plot twist bitch one new touch starved child coming up, we love a combo deal

Avatar
spoopyspoony

ok but if Bruce notices the discrepancies first and somehow figures out that him wishing one of his children would accept a hug was the beginning of this without realizing Danny's end of this, what do you think he'd do? Would he assume that Danny is the wish granting reality warper in this situation. Does he prefer the doctored memories and addition to the family over if one of his children had their personality altered to accept hugs? Does he think that's what happened to Danny and his discomfort is the result of mind alteration counter to his nature, what with how he definitely accepts hugs but that there's something wrong. Does his knowledge of Danny come with the bit about his history of being mind controlled? How much guilt do you think Bruce would be racked with?

So for Bruce to connect these two instances is going to take something pretty significant to keep that joke in his mind around the mystery of Added Child

Therefore:

Bruce makes his wish

Desiree literally drops Danny directly on top of him immediately like 30 seconds later

All the bats “remember” Danny likes to scramble around and climb but he can’t climb like Dick so this is a super normal occurrence and it becomes an “ah yes here he is my cuddly son”

This moment is recorded by a single security camera so that when Bruce begins to wonder and goes back looking for the first recorded footage of Danny he watches the whole scene over and cannot deny the impact of his words

For bonus points Desiree does magically doctor years of manor and public footage of Danny with the bats but he’s always just in the background or taking part in the action only doing the Danno face, this is the first case where Danny’s face moves

Then Bruce gets to deal with:

- the potential consequences his wish might have had on his current children

- why reality decided it’d be easier to manufacture a whole extra child rather than persuade one of his kids to hug him

- temporary sus on if Danny is an evil wish manipulator that is immediately countered by how awkward and scared Danny is and how much he visibly actually doesn’t like accepting things they give him and cries when they’re nice to him

(Is this an Alien Refugee who has wish powers he can’t fully control? Did he just desperately need an out but wasn’t prepared?

Did he assume Bruce otherwise doesn’t care for his kids and wouldn’t notice if Danny just added to the family and then avoided them all? Is this the energy Bruce gives off to outsiders!?

He’s close to the truth with the first two but can’t know how much)

- did he accidentally kidnap Danny as a random victim to his wish? Is Danny also a victim?

Depending on how much of his backstory Danny has innocently trauma-dumped, this could get real messy and bad for Bruce, but either way will probably make him much more sympathetic to Danny’s actual story when it comes out - specifically also because Danny blaming himself for “intentionally” making this wish is pretty clearly the exact same hyper-self-criticism Bruce is going through

He’s a kid, he was exhausted and pushed beyond his limits, and frankly, what did he actually do? He said a word that occasionally activates a ghost’s bad behaviour instincts

And what he actually wished for is gonna give the entire batfam a crisis when they realise how many of their internal conflicts he just said aloud and suddenly this is a Teachable Moment they should all accept and love each other more

Desiree is FURIOUS this is not supposed to be a goddamn Hallmark movie they should not be growing and learning together as a fucking family just hunt Danny already you assholes

I’d like to point out that, at first, they think Danny was injured while he was in their care. As in, these horrific injuries they patched up like it was normal, they think are from a rogue or maybe a Wayne kidnapping the night before the wish was made.

Once the Bats start to realize things aren’t right, they focus on the magic part and how Danny fits into this. They’re trying to create a timeline of how their memory and records line up, and are trying to figure out what’s going on.

It isn’t until much later that one of them wonders how Danny got injured if he wasn’t with them that night like their memory says he was.

Y’know what I totally did forget Danny is mortally wounded but I maintain it makes Desire’s drop shipping way funnier so I’m sticking with it, Danny doesn’t need to be conscious for that bit

They assume Danny just hid his injuries and he gets like 18 lectures for climbing around while beat to shit and also not explaining how he got hurt

Danny, hazy from blood loss, transportation, wishing, and generalised confusion (possibly also the good painkillers if we let him have some), accidentally gives an accurate report of how he was injured while in the med bay - only leaving out the words Mom and Dad

The bats have memories that sorta fit it, and it wasn’t like it was a huge public spectacle; it’s not surprising there’s nothing in the media

Danny is benched until he’s fully healed, with a verbal “no matter how fast ghosts heal” which is when he realises they know his secret

And accept him anyway

So Danny’s actually not taking to the streets of Gotham until long after the whole confusion has been sorted out… and just maybe the thing that makes the bats suspicious at first is that they all know different powersets for Danny, and some of them don’t even overlap

The funny thing is, Danny has enough powers that if they all think of five, they could very well all be thinking of completely different powers.

And because this family doesn't communcicate, they never ask Danny, and are instead arguing with each other over what his actual powers are. The only ones they can agree on are flight, intagibility, and accelerated healing.

None of them even stop to consider that maybe he has all the powers they're saying.

Oh he has enough and there are enough of the batfam that not all of them even know about the flying and intangibility, 1000% so we can have this argument

Dick: Danny it’s so irresponsible to go climbing when you’re injured! You’re gonna hurt yourself more when you fall!

Tim: Dick calm the fuck down, he can just catch himself and fly down

Dick: he can’t fucking fly Tim he’s a ghost not a Kryptonian!

Duke: yeah but he can just go intangible and fall through the ground instead of going splat

Dick and Tim: what the fuck did you just say

Note - this does need to be after at least a week of them all obliquely referencing the power set each of them thinks he has in ways that accidentally make sense for a totally different power set such as:

Steph: *sighs* I wish he’d be more careful, Danny thinks he’s invulnerable just because he’s half ghost…

Duke: *thinking she means intangibility and letting attacks fall through him* yeah…

Tim: *thinking she means flying from danger* yeah…

Jason: *thinking she means accelerated healing* yeah…

Dick: *thinking she means Existing As A Teenager he is getting old and Brucey* yeah…

Cass: *thinking she means noodle body physics* mmhm.

Alfred: *thinking she means invisibility* indeed

Damian: *thinking she means Literally Dying On Command* ttch. He’s got a point.

And I mean I could keep going Danny has enough powers to give the whole Batman Inc crew a separate 6 each and cover the bases

For the first moment, with the wish, I think they should still scold him for being reckless while injured.

Even the ones that know he has flight/intangibility/noodle body/accelerated healing. Because the thing is, he didn't do any of that.

He dropped straight onto Bruce like a bag of bricks (well, Lego bricks maybe; boi does not have enough mass) and then passed out. With untreated injuries! Didn't even slap a bandage on himself before crawling around on the ceiling!

Whatever powers various bats knew he had to negate/minimize damage, he didn't use. Clearly he was so injured, his abilities were failing him. So no one brings them up right then. They are much too busy rushing him down to med bay in the Cave and then giving him a thorough reaming for hiding injuries and doing dumb shit while grievously injured.

@hailsatanacab OwO? You have. Thoughts? Share please?

@ailithnight behold, my thoughts:

Depending on who you ask, Danny's been with the Waynes for anywhere from four years to three to what he knows is the truth. Two months.

It's a delicate question, really, so Danny tries to avoid it when he can, along with anything relating to his past with and without them. Best to keep them all in the dark for a little longer—just until he can say he's repaid some of the help they've given him.

Deep down, he knows it won't ever be enough.

But he's doing well! He's pretty much healed now, aside from the odd twinge whenever he stretches himself and his powers, and while he feels so incredibly guilty over this whole situation... It was for the best.

He can't—he won't—regret it.

That's what he thought, anyway, until Bruce Wayne had come to sit on his bed one morning, eyebrows drawn in a concerned, confused, look.

"Danny..." he says, reaching his hand over as if he's going to lay it on Danny's knee before pulling it back with a breath. "Danny, we need to talk."

Consider:

Danny comes back to a warzone in Amity. Turns out without Phantom around to keep things in relative check, everything has gone to shit. And not just for the humans. Without Danny there to sabotage their efforts, the ghost hunters had also becoming scarily and increasingly competent. Loathe as she is to admit it, Desiree has learned a thing or 2 herself about 'Careful what you wish for'. She wanted Phantom out of the way, so she sent him away, and it was a mistake.

Danny comes back to a warzone, humans and ghosts alike suffering, and it just layers on the guilt even more. 2 whole months he was in Gotham. He was basically healed ages ago. He could have at least checked in. But he didn't. 2 whole months living the stolen good life, taking advantage of such good people as the Bats and neglecting his responsibilities here. Well no more. He's going to fix this. No matter what it does to him. He has to.

He finds Desiree in a cage with the GIW. She's weak. He has to share a lot of his own ecto with her first. There are ghost nearby howling for him to help them instead. They don't understand that prioritizing Desiree is how he's helping them. It doesn't make it any easier to ignore their pleas. Once she's strong enough, it's easier than he expected it to be to convince her to turn back his wish. He tells her what he wants and she stares at him for a long moment, something calculating in her eyes; then wordlessly, she nods. Between one blink and the next, the world unwrites itself, and Danny goes from hovering over Desiree in a GIW lab to being strapped back to the table in his parent's basement.

It hurts. Ancients, he'd forgotten how much this hurt! It's agony. Instantly, Danny wants to give in to his selfish desires again. Desiree is right there, staring at him with a grim look. It's like she's waiting for him to do something. He won't. He won't do that again. The pain is invading, steadily consuming his coherent thought. But he focuses on the time he had with the Waynes. Lets the memories of a truly loving family give him strength. And he thinks about what his wish had wrought. And lets that knowledge harden his resolve.

He doesn't wish. He simply commands.

"Go home, Desiree. Leave, and warn the others that Amity Park isn't safe." Another moment of staring. Another wordless nod. And then Danny is alone. Alone in the basement, waiting for his parents to wake back up and come down to continue their work. With nothing better to do, Danny loses himself to the pain and guilt and memories of a softer life.

.

Now what Danny doesn't realize is that Desiree is much wiser than she was 2 relative months ago. Wiser and a part of her even softened towards the little prince who would give himself, who has given himself, over and over and over again; even for those who have done nothing but but cause him harm. Danny comes and demands his wish undone. And he doesn't use the magic words, but Desiree has manipulated these things to her benefit before. Danny wants his wish undone, and so it is done.

But, crucially, it is only his wish undone. Hundreds of miles away, several Bats begin to experience their lives twice over. It's confusing, disconcerting, distressing. It'll be 2 months before the conflicting memories catch up with the relative present. But once they do, once the Bats of Gotham have the information they need, they will come. Desiree just needs to be patient. Wait. And wish for herself that Phantom will stay strong enough to hang on until they come.

Fuck that hurts god damn okay but now i gotta fix it right?

So i think something really really cool abt Desiree is that her powers are ONLY limited by the wish, right? And she has been twisting these things to her benefit for thousands of years. She knows how to be selective about the things she weaves with her powers. So when she unravels things she very deliberately leaves the bats out of the rewrite. (Under a readmore cause it got LONG lmao)

Fuckit

Im forgetting people i know it but im about to collapse in bed

Not sure what I've been signalled here for, but fuckit, I'll re-reblog. I enjoyed this one.

Mmmm the snacks, the tasty tasty snacks…

Danny wakes slowly, this time. Last time he woke up in the lab it was in agonizing pain, fire jolting right through his soul and please anything but that again

He remembers seeing Desiree fade before things got too bad and all he was was pain; that has to be enough

He’s on the table, he’s staying here, and even if Desiree did care enough to do anything, he didn’t even tell the Bats where Amity Park is

Why didn’t he just tell them where he lived? Even at the end?

(He knows why; so that when they came back to their senses and realized ghosts are a threat, such a serious threat, they were mind controlled for months how could they think otherwise, they couldn’t just come for him

Not because he thought they’d fail to find him; not the bats, he’s seen them work

But he had to hope his birth parents could finish him off before he had to see the betrayal in their eyes

So he could pretend Bruce’s last words were still true, and someone might have loved him anyway)

So he’s in no hurry to wake up this time; it won’t change what they do to him, and it hurts just a little less all sleep hazed like this

The table almost feels soft under him

Like falling asleep on the couch, where his ass always sinks into that spot between the cushions

It… feels a lot like the couch, actually

Like there’s really warm hands holding his, not just the memory of a dream. More hands in his hair, so soft and gentle

Danny wakes slowly, fighting all the way, desperate not to let those last remnants of what must be a dream fade… only they never do

When he wakes up, his dad is there, and Desiree undid the spell, she must have, he felt time reverse… and his own memories are so fuzzy, he can’t really remember the time clearly, just vague impressions of a home and a family and all these faces… he loves these faces

They all love him, and Danny just can’t remember their names or why he wants to cry so badly but just this once he does

And his dad, the dad who loves him, holds him tenderly so he can’t pull his stitches, soothes him and dries his tears, and maybe he’ll have to learn all his siblings’ names over again

(Or just be reminded; once he hears them they slot into place, once they tell a real story he can remember it (this comes in handy when Duke tries to swear Danny promised to do all his algebra for him a couple months later) it’s just… slightly out of reach)

————

As for Danny himself. Well, he always wondered what happens when you kill a halfa the rest of the way

He’s in ghost form when Bruce finishes stitching and finally peels him off the table; it’s for the best, all the bats know it, the IV is pure ecto not blood both to boost his healing powers and to keep him in ghost form because as a human…

As a human this would have killed him weeks ago

Ghosts can heal; even for a halfa, who actually has physical organs that can be prodded and removed, none of them are actually life sustaining except the core

All of the bats are quick to assure Danny that they’ll keep getting him ecto, not to try and change back, not until his wounds have healed

Danny doesn’t tell them that he’s not even sure he could anymore

He could always feel his humanity before, a tethering weight on his core that bound him to life, could be tugged on as needed or when his ecto ran too low

It’s not there now

It’s not until the bats get worried, that days have passed and he’s still just a ghost, that he realized he must have changed back by now in the other timeline

They’d tended his wounds as human for a while, he’d still needed to heal, but it had been days. Not weeks. Not months, and he still doesn’t feel that weight

Because last time, well, it was just physical injuries

He’d been overwrought and in pain and thought it was the worst emotional pain he’d ever feel, but Desiree’s wish had given him one thing she hadn’t accounted for (or had, in a moment of mercy)

He wanted his family to accept him

The Fentons hadn’t been his family while he healed

This time, he put himself on that table, under that knife, knowing even as his birth parents betrayed him he had betrayed his chosen family in such a worse way; forced himself into their heads and hearts, manipulated them into thinking they loved him

Bruce, coincidentally, has added a ghost portal to the batcave, and by the time it’s finished he’s out of patience waiting for Danny to heal

Sam and Tuck use the Spectre Speeder to fly Danny, Bruce, and Jason to Frostbite to find out what’s going on, and Danny’s expecting to be told it’s too late

He’s never going to be the human son Bruce wanted, because he died on that table and he knows that will destroy Bruce even if his ghost sticks around

It’s not that though

Danny can hardly believe it, hardly bear to hear it, but it’s not that

This time his core was fractured, almost past repair, and it will take more than just time and ecto to heal

It will take what he broke it for losing; love, and family, and care

He almost begs Bruce and Jason not to tell on the way home because part of him is still afraid he can’t have those things, that he’ll never be fixed

(This is why it’s still broken)

Part of it is knowing full well exactly what will come when his siblings hear that

Dick installs himself in a hammock over Danny’s bed so he can hold Danny’s hand while he sleeps but not be in the way (no matter how much Danny tries to avoid it)

Steph steals the curtains and redoes them in paintings of all their adventures

The others might think Cass leaves his room sometimes but Danny knows she doesn’t, can feel her life and her worry and her own forming core under the bed

(Alfred probably knows too, because he brings enough for two with each meal)

Jason redefines fudge by making every single family favourite Danny ever mentioned and gives them all a Wayne family twist

(Bruce pouts at the one with each square leafed in edible gold but Danny laughs so hard he forgets to breathe so he can’t complain)

Tim makes The World’s Most Obnoxious Family Slideshow and time got rewritten so none of these fucking photos should exist but he’s Tim Drake and Desiree left him a boon

Changed versions of the photos she intentionally left unchanged the last time

(She also circled Amity Park on the paper map inside the Batplane she’s not a digital girl okay

The bats don’t even notice for a year, until the plane equipment checkups)

Damian still isn’t exactly personally sure what being family means, but he is doing his damnedest and that means the full run of Dick Grayson Introductory Family Outings that he was subjected to when he first moved in, in order, as soon as Danny is physically capable of each

(Laser Quest takes a while. Danny insists he could have demolished the lot of them from his sickbed. Being invisible does not count)

Duke, most considerate sibling of all (and most recent recipient of the intro treatment), wrangles the others out of his room for at least a couple hours a day, often with full shadow possession the first few times

(He can’t find Cass but that’s okay, Danny finds that funny and Cass isn’t obtrusive)

Healing is still a slow process and comes with the Fun and Exciting caveat of his powers reawakening one by one as the cracks in his core heal… and all the ensuing joy of learning to control them as if for the first time

With the fun bonus of extremely overprotective, omnipresent, blackmail hungry siblings to help, “help”, and record his misery

Bruce stops them and confiscates phones the first couple of times, but unfortunately what Danny needs is family, and apparently being obnoxious counts because his recovery speeds up noticeably while playing tug-o-war for Tim’s latest recording

For his health, Danny must put up with photos and video of him stuck half way through the bed, half inside Dick’s arm on a bad morning, invisible except for his underwear, and frosted over with a hat, scarf, and snowman esque face melted into his ice

Luckily, getting revenge also counts and speeds his recovery

YES. YES U GET IT.

I forgot about jazz but like. Im thinking this is far enough in the timeline that she had already moved out of amity. She was convinced that their parents would accept him so she isn't super concerned about leaving, but she does make sure to have weekly check ins with him and sam and tucker. During the two months that weren't she got a huge dose of guilt and self blame and tried very hard to find Danny. She isn't included in the memory fuckery so when danny misses check in she calls sam/tucker who were so busy with the bats thst they just didn't think about her. She is suitably freaked out and still feels guilty.

She ends up transferring to gotham u, so she can be near danny. She maybe falls a little in love with cass and they end up dating she gets the bats to all go to therapy.

Therapy def helps danny heal faster too. The sirens break into the manor a few weeks after the rescue to find out why nome of their birds are at girls night and find danny and are IMMEDIATELY like "new nibling shaped" and shower him in love and affection.

The first time Danny changes back to human form is a surprise, a pleasant one, to everyone.

It's movie night with a full house, a far more frequent occurrence these days. Busy vigilante lives be damned, this is what their brother needs to heal; they find ways, make time, to give it to him.

Half the brood is already asleep. Tim was the first to go down. Alfred had cut his caffeine after 84 hours awake. Duke and Jazz both followed suit shortly after. And Danny himself had just barely outlasted Jason, the two of them curled up and half buried in the coveted center of the pile.

As Danny fully passed over from the waking world to the one of dreams, it happened. The flash of light that never actually illuminated anything but could still be seen like afterimages on a photograph.

All of the alerts Bats immediately turned their eyes to the center of the pile. Someone pulled back the blanket, checking what they all knew had just happened. Dick had his phone in his hand in a heartbeat, snapping several successive pics. Other hands were gently rousing the sleepers so that they could see, too. The tangible proof that their brother was healing.

The moment doesn't last long. Just a couple minutes. Not even long enough for everyone else to wake. Jason is just blinking open his eyes, trying to glare at whoever just woke him, when there's another flash. He's alert in an instant, and disappointed to have missed it. At least Dick has photo evidence that it really happened.

They wonder, of course. In hushed whispers. Why didn't the transformation stick? Should they be worried? Should they not be worried? Should they tell Danny it happened? Or will that just disappoint him that he couldn't hold it.

They do settle on telling Danny, and then revisiting Frostbite for hopefully some answers. It was almost time for a progress check anyway.

Frostbite doesn't have a definite answer. But then, he rarely does when it comes to the unique intricacies of halfa ecto-biology. What he does have is a solid theory.

"The Great One is naturally a perfect Balance. His default state is exactly as much alive as he is dead. While this balance can be temporarily swayed, nothing can be done short of shattering his core or obliterating his human form to permanently change this perfect balance. In truth, since his human form was fully healed from the opening of the portal; there has been no 'default' form. When both halves are healthy and well, neither side takes precedence over the other. Only when he is unwell, when that balance is swayed, does one side become default over the other.

Previously, when The Great One 'defaulted' to his human form, it was always due to excessive physical injury or exhaustion. That is a limitation of the living. Physical injuries on a ghost take time and energy to heal, but ultimately only damage to the core is truly severe."

"Wait, you're saying he was reverting back to human form because that was the side of him that was at it's limit? How does that make sense? Wouldn't it be better at those times to stay a ghost? Since the ghost side is more durable?"

"You are perceiving more distinction between the forms than there is. What happens to one, happens to both. In those moments, the human side was already at it's limit. Any more would have been too much regardless of which form he was actively using.

The reason one form takes precedence over the other is almost counterintuitive. You might assume that the human form becomes default as the balance sways toward the living. In fact, it is the opposite. It is when the balance sways too much towards death that life becomes the default. It is the halfa body's method of attempting to reassert the balance."

"Human hurts sway the balance towards death."

"And so the body defaults to human until the balance is restored. Now this time, whole the physical damage was severe, the damage to the Great One's core was even more so. It very nearly shattered under the strain of all it had lost. It very well may have done so had you arrived to his rescue any later.

In this instance, his internal balance has swayed to much towards living. And so, until his core heals, he will find his transformation to his human form mimics his first transformations to his ghost form in the early days since he became a halfa. That is, it will take focus and energy to take and maintain that form. It will grow easier again in time. You will know he is fully healed when it comes to him again as easy and instinctual as breathing."

God it hits so hard that the first time he goes back to human is with his whole family as he feels safe and cared for and loved. And him reverting to the form that is at its limit is SUPER interesting. The implications of the balance being further towards human than ghost in that situation is SUPER cool too, cause like, his human form was ABSOLUTELY at its limit too. He was 100% gonna die as a human and that the damage to his core was still greater at that moment?

*chefs kiss*

Good food.

Can we also talk about Jason and Cass are absolutely his favorites. Cass is everyone's favorite (except dick, who's fave is damian), but especially Danny's. She and Jason are the closest to what he is, and having them nearby not only helps his own healing but helps filter their ecto too (cause even tho cass doesn't deal with the rage the same as Jay, she was still dipped in a lazarus pit[1] so her ecto is still fucked).

And sure, damian grew up around the pits so he too needs the extra bit of help with his stuff too, but i think Damian has the hardest time with this new brother having come to the family with mind control involved. Everyone else knows it wasn't on purpose and is very quick to forgive him but I think Damian has a harder time, especially adding in some jealousy about how easily Danny was accepted despite the mind control when it took years for everyone to accept him so thuroughly. (He gets it, especially with Tim, who he tried to kill multiple times, who still sometimes flinches if Damian startles him and mooves too sharply. He knows why it took a long time to he accepted and he doesn't resent any of them for it, but it doesn't stop him from being jealous at how easy it was for Danny to come into the fold. Im putting danny around 16 here, and damian is 13)

Jazz is more then forgiven for her optimism, but i think Danny is still a little upset with her. Not irrational, but i don't think he likes that he is, and therapy definitely helps with that.

The relationship dynamics within the waynes were still hella fucked when danny first appeared. Getting better, but still absolutely full of complex emotions and bitterness and anger and such. They all come together for Danny and it helps smooth out a lot of te awful, but i like the idea of there still being days where one or more of them have to leave because their arguing is doing more harm to Danny then good.

That first visit with frostbite? Definitely involved a lot of "our famil is a little fucked up, how should we expect this to effect his healing?" And jay and bruce have to speedrun a confrontation that they had been avoiding since tim pulled jason kicking and screaming back into the family by the back of the shirt.

Turns out Danny isn't the only one with a damaged core that needs family and love to heal. (As a halfa, jay's 2 obsessions are family and justice. It's part of why he is so adamant about being justified in killing the people that won't ever stop and that will never see any real consequences for what they do. Justice has to be served and if the legal system won't serve it then jason will).

[1]: side note, had the thought the other day: a popular thing to make the pits is blocked portals or pools of ecto on top of active cracks between dimensions, what if we combined that with the idea of PD slaughtering all halfas? The pits used to be stable, natural portals that were opened in just the right conditions that they resulted in the making of a halfa, and when that halfa was ended, it closed the portal but left a scar. The reason they are in easily concealable places is cause once the halfa was strong enough they were able to move their portal.

A Thousand Things by tickertape

M, 108k, Wangxian

Summary: Wei Ying can’t find his words. “What would I do in Gusu?” The man’s mouth quirks in what Wei Ying cannot interpret as anything but a tiny, smug smirk. “Learn.” Wei Ying has made a fine life for himself. He’s got his jiejies and his talismans; he doesn’t need anyone’s charity. But spending a whole year in Gusu? That’s hard to turn down. Kay's comments: A Wangxian My Fair Lady AU is something I never knew I needed until I started reading this story. It's such a great idea and wonderfully done, it works to well! A story, where Wei Wuxian doesn't get adopted by the Jiangs but still ends up with some cultivation talent, enough to sell talismans and make a living. Eventually, Lan Qiren stumbles upon him and gets humbled so good by him that he decides to take him to Gusu so that he gets properly trained. Cue: the slowest of burns between Wangxian that's so worth it though. Really loved how the characters are portrayed! Excerpt: The man huffs, a derisive sound. “You may be clever, but you are not a professional by any standard.” “I’m paid for my work. That makes it my profession.” “You are untrained and thus cannot profess to be qualified by any official standard,” the Lan teacher retorts. In the same scathing tone, he mutters, “Not to mention your attitude and illegible script.” Asshole. Wei Ying scowls at him. “So, I’m unqualified and you’re discourteous. Seems we’re both flawed men, yet here you are using my work to educate your students.” The man balks minutely at that, and one of the white-clad students makes an indignant noise. Wei Ying continues: “My pieces are valuable enough to the people who buy from me. If I’m not good enough to meet your qualified, highly-trained standards, then please feel free to pass me by.” He can’t quite hold himself back from one last jibe. “I’d like to see your students recreate even one of my talismans half so well.” The daozhang opens his mouth as if to speak, but then pauses. Wei Ying watches his eyes move over the table once more. He forces himself to recompose, straightening his shoulders and loosening his hands from where they had been unconsciously gripping at his robes. Composure, dignity, control: the three most important qualities to display when facing the world. No sleeves on fire today. But Wei Ying has never been the best with keeping his composure; he’s too spurred by his own wild thoughts, prone to ‘fits of inspiration’ as Qing-jiejie likes to call them.

pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, wei wuxian isn't adopted by the jiangs, wei wuxian goes to gusu, rogue cultivator wei wuxian, genius wei wuxian, inventor wei wuxian, developing friendships, developing relationship, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, miscommunication, nightmares, class differences, panic attacks, night hunts, cloud recesses shenanigans, cloud recesses rabbits, slow burn, wei wuxian has a fear of dogs

Strip Poker by kaistrex (wc4267, teen)

Summary: Stiles just doesn’t understand. All the other Soulbites he’s ever seen have been neat, charming things: his dad’s with a cute crooked incisor on the upper jaw bite from his mom, Scott with his perfect fairy-tale match in Allison. But this— It’s ugly. He looks like he’s been savaged, like whoever these teeth belonged to didn’t just bite, but sank their teeth in and shook. They look like—like they’re from an animal. Who the hell could make a mark like this? - When Stiles’ Soulbite manifests on his neck and makes it look like he’s been mauled by an animal, he takes to spending most of his time hiding it in the preserve. It would be the perfect haven if it wasn’t for Derek Hale being such a creeper.

Omg. I've never read a soulmates fic with this twist - soul *bites*. This is such a good read! Love it.

💠🧡The Lemon Squeeze

By:redbud

Summary:

He really wasn’t doing this out of gratitude. More like sheer relief. Never in his life had he been treated like this, forced down, yet held gently. He panted for it.

OR

Wei Ying's solution to his problems is to punch and claw his way through life. Lan Zhan shows up to wrap him in a blanket burrito and be his gun so that Wei Ying doesn't have to get his knuckles bloody anymore. But that is easier said than done.

Prompt 295

So, maybe Danny should have been more specific when he said he wanted to get reincarnated, because this? Is not an ideal situation.

See he’s fine with being a clone, really, but uh, apparently the scientists want to terminate him- which, like dude, he’s not even melting or actively dying! So what if he failed at their tests, his body is three, give him a break!

Well, at least it’s given him certainty in getting out, because these are Not good people. He wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and- hold up, another clone? Brother? Two brothers? One aged up, one in the middle of it- since his own aging-up failed past three?

Oh hell no, they can’t experiment on his brothers, those are his brothers and living people just as much as he is! Time to break out- and he’s taking those papers thank you- and gonna’ grab his… he’s gonna’ call them his triplets because they’re the same age, just aged differently.

Now hold his hand, they’re runnin’ to the mountai- oh thank fuck, the physically-oldest of them can fly. To the mountains while they have the cover of night and they can figure things out. At least his life isn’t boring yet…

The ones who finds them? Tim. Followed closely by Nightwing and Batman.

Tim had just ducked to the side to avoid the green laser blasts when Nightwing and Batman caught up. (Danny seems to be the only one with control over his heat vision - yay for previous life experience.) Tim and Batman debate over trying to approach-or-subdue methods meanwhile Dick has (after sighing at the two) already removed his domino mask and started trying to explain who they are and why.

Match has stood himself in front of the others and is growling but getting less antagonistic while listening to Nightwing. (it helps that he isn't wearing a lab coat and that he's talking about getting them some food and comfy beds of their own if they want) Danny and Kon also listen but it takes all three agreeing before any movement happens.

As soon as they're out of the cave though? They see two people - one in bright colours and the other in black who are nervous even if they're trying to show them they're not. There's also a bunch of others in colourful clothes standing further back.

When the man in black reaches out Danny reacts before thinking. He bites. Fortunately Batman's wearing his gauntlet and Danny's only managed to get the tip so he didn't actually pierce any skin but it does sort of set the tone.

It isn't helped when Nightwing - who's skimming the papers Danny was reading - announces "Mazel Tov! It's a boy!"

Sorry, had to do a sketch of Dick tryin to coax the trio of kryptonian clones out of the cave. Very basic sketch lol.

Prepared for Anything Part One

Danny stared at the ceiling, bored, as the creepy clown laughed manically at a camera. Danny hadn’t been in this dimension for two minutes, (he’d portalled directly into Joker’s hideout) before he was promptly tied to a chair. He could get out of it easily.

Thing was, there were others here, restrained more thoroughly than Danny. They wore colourful, armoured suits and were obviously the vigilantes/heroes of this. . .place—Gotham? Danny’d heard the name mentioned a few times now—This Freakshow wannabe was obviously one of their villains.

Danny had been hoping someone would show up without having to draw attention to himself. What was this dimension’s stance on halfas? Or ghosts?

But no one had come yet, it had been an hour, and he was getting stiff from sitting here so long without being able to move his limbs.

Danny heaved a loud, exasperated sigh-groan at the ceiling. The guy, face-painted like a toddler who’d gotten into their parent’s make-up, suddenly stopped monologuing.

The Job (DC x DP)

Danny's grades are in the toilet. He's not going to be working anywhere nice after graduation. College could be on the table but he could be dooming the world if he left Amity Park undefended.

Luckily, there's a place in Amity that's hiring! It pays well, decent benefits, and Danny's basically got a guaranteed spot. The GIW.

The Ghostly Intervention Watch sends a job offer to Danny in response to his resume, not an interview offer. He's a Fenton, after all. He's in. Agent F.

Not only is he in the GIW, Danny's a rising star. Sure, he hasn't managed to successfully detain a ghost (but who has?!) but he is the most accurate shot of all of them, and often finds traces of ectoplasm that others miss. The trails may have always lead his team into dead ends but one day their luck will change!

The GIW is the first line of defence against the dark paranormal forces that threaten their way of life. So the most important agents have to stay in Amity Park even when the invitation is from the Justice League.

However, of their other agents, it's rather obvious who to send to debrief the JLA on the danger. Agent L is great at public speaking, Agent G was actually involved in passing the Anti-Ecto Acts and can advise on all the legalities. And their rising star. Agent F.

Danny needed a job, but, he wasn't convinced about accepting the offer from GiW until Sam and Tucker sat him down and after they were done smacking him on the head explained how Danny could essentially be the man on the inside turning them AWAY from ghosts who were harmless. He had to start small but between his last name and his acting abilities and their general incompetence, he'd be in good standing in no time.

Huh. Yeah that could work. He'd be basically playing double agent. Huh. Okay he was in.

So Danny joins the GiW. Gets some flack since he's the newest kid on the block but it's mostly superficial. Everyone is waiting to see how their newest joinee, Agent F proves his mettle.

They were on the trail of a ghost, (Danny recognised Youngblood's handiwork and needed to lead them away from the ghost ASAP) and suddenly Agent F finds a trail of ectoplasm! Good job F! Lead the way! Everyone follows the trail until it suddenly vanishes and no amount of searching leads them anywhere. Well. Nevermind. Agent F was the one who got the closest to the despicable ghostly entity and that too on his first hunt! He deserves a commendation!

A firefight with Plasmus shows Agent F actually knows how to shoot decently even if they never captured the ghost. (Listen. They might not be winning against the ghosts but they're not losing either. A stalemate is acceptable. Of course no one officially says this but locker room talk doesn't really change no matter where you are. School. Incompetent Governmental agency. Eh.)

Phantom hasn't shown himself frequently recently but the other ghostly menaces are also reducing their nonsense. (Danny, now that he doesn't have to worry about school, meets with his collection of Rogues and comes to an agreement of sorts. He lets them satisfy their Obsessions as long as they're not being destructive to the squishy humans and he'll steer the idiots in white away as much as he can. They even come up with a schedule for staged fights!)

(They tried having Agent F teach the others. Their aim somehow got worse so that was scrapped immediately. No worries. No one can be good at everything. They'll stuck to observation for learning for now and hope osmosis of knowledge is actually a thing.) (It is not.)

This goes on for a while and Agent F is recognised as the rising star. If wasn't for the fact that he's so new and they have administrative needs, he'd be one of the senior members already.

The JL contact the GiW requesting information about their work since some of their members apparently went about chasing a JL affiliated member. (Was it Deadman? Jason? Someone else? You choose)

Excellent news! Three agents are selected for their contributions in the fight against the Ghostly nuisances. Agent G for his work in getting the legalization of Anti Ecto Acts. Agent L for his public speaking skills and work in ensuring that the right politicians gave their support to get the Acts passed. Agent F, their rising star.

Danny meanwhile is torn between fanboying over the possibility of meeting JL members and going to the Watchtower in SPACE and having to get these idiots shut down ASAP with some legitimate help.

Oh good! Batman is here! Crap Constantine looks so pissed.

Idea.

Danny knows Martian Manhunter is a telepath. So Danny starts blasting “read my mind” signals until MM picks up. So while Agent L and Agent G are trying to convince the JL that ghosts are non-sentient and inherently malicious, Danny is giving MM the low down about what’s really going on.

Oh yes ok that's an excellent idea @mkarchin713

While the presentation is going on, Danny's giving all the information about the GiW, his trickery that allowed him to keep the ghosts safe, the tactics used by the GiW when he was younger, etc. to Martian Manhunter. J'onn decides very quickly this is something that needs planning and diplomacy of Batman and Wonder Woman. So he loops in Batman and Wonder Woman on the mind link. Batman nods very slightly and Superman draws Agents L and G into a discussion with Hal while WW, Batman and MM converge with Danny. (Constantine shoves his way in very quickly and Batman grunts in acknowledgement.)

"Right, what's this really about?" (He'd been dragged straight here after a mission that went to shit and then went fuck all a day into a week long mission. No alcohol and no smoking on the Watchtower was something he suffered regularly but right now made him outright cranky)

"I needed a job when I was younger. The GiW unfortunately didn't do their vetting, instead just decided that my being a Fenton was enough. So I decided that I could kill two birds with one stone and things kinda snowballed. You really need to do something about them. They barely listen to anything not about ghosts and are convinced that the whole ghost zone and ghostly culture is non sentient and dangerous. That's simply not true."

"Ghost Zone kid?"

"Well grandpa Clocky always calls it the Realms bu-"

"Bloody hell. You don't mean Infinite Realms do ya?"

"I've heard it referred to that way a few times?"

"Buggers. Bats, we need to shut these idiots down right away. They don't know what they're dealing with and if the two flunkies presentation was anything to go by it's sheer dumb luck that we haven't been involved in an interdimensional war yet."

Danny: I mean, if by "sheer dumb luck" you mean "me working both sides to prevent an interdimensional incendent", sure.
